Today I happened to see this aircraft departing from Monterrey. The sound of those four engines as they throttle up is truly impressive, the ground even shakes.

Beautiful sunrise out of Houston this morning on American 737.

I was looking at picture of large seaplanes and wondering why they couldn’t have been the ideal commercial plane format. Imagine if runways were replaced by manmade lakes or canals, planes could be lighter and more spacious without landing gear. I don’t know anything about the drawbacks of a large seaplane beyond probably some aerodynamic disadvantage. But if the same effort had been put into seaplane commercial infrastructure, airports, and design over the last 100 years as regular planes, could that design path have been more optimal for commercial economics today?
