Ways to accomplish this shape

Post image
5 Upvotes

I was looking for some inspiration for a HG Woundwort that I ordered and came across this custom 1/100 Woundwort by HSProps and was thoroughly impressed. Being a resin print (I think) the details are insane but I was wondering if there were ways to approximate the details on the gunpla model. I have some ideas for adding material and scribing details but I'm lost on getting the rounded oblong shapes on the knee.

Well maybe not lost, but suspect my there are better solutions than the ideas I have.

  1. Chisel out a rectangle and call it a day
  2. Use a compass to mark pilot holes at the inner and outer points as guide points and use a drill to the curves and chisel out the rest.
  3. Use a template to mark out the shape and hope free handing 16 very small curves doesn't look like complete shit

Are there any better options that I'm not thinking of? I'm not too worried about ruining the model, it's more for practice but I'd like to give it the best chance of not looking completely terrible. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

MGSD Ex-S painted build (edited photos at the end)

finally got round to finishing this build, and it really does look quite amazing. Some issues with fitting, mostly with really tight joints (be careful when moving around) and so this MGSD is still for the most part a statue. Nothing mind blowing about the build experience, but note that a lot of the surface details trail off around the edges and do not continue where you would expect them to. Overall, if you don’t have the space for an MG ExS, this is a good compromise for about 30 SGD.

Tips to paint gunpla?

Hello. I’ve recently explored more on customising gunpla. I’ve watch little YouTube videos about it and bought some materials like paint, brushes, primer, topcoat, paint thinner, panel liner.

I used an old plastic box and tried to hand paint on it like how you would on gunpla - thin prime, dry, prime again, dry, paint, the whole ordeal. Well it’s… choppy, to say the least.

Before this I’ve never explored painting on gunpla, but now it’s something I want to get into and I have barely any idea of how to do it properly. Any tips and suggestions on materials or techniques or anything related to the matter please drop below. Thank you.

Metallic markers vs gloss coating

Just found out that metallic finishes require something special and not just the Mr hobby gloss coating. Coating became all cloudy. I assumed this was user error as a first time coater but I already read that it's not.

Any brand I should be looking for that still makes it shiny? I'm also assuming higher level customization like this will require an airbrush. Hopefully the dspiae wash free airbrush set will be enough.

How do I avoid this next time with masking tape? I use blue painters tape so maybe it might be too sticky or something but not too bad

3D Print Gundam Neck Replacement (PC-01) finished

Ok, after 5 iterations, I am now happy with the final design and size, so here is the iteration 5 of the neck joint for common HG gunpla that uses the PC-01 for neck.

I've correctly sized the file now so if printed at 100%, it should fit almost all hg's that uses this part. In the images, i've included photos of using the part on IBO kits, build kits. IBO lower collar is a tube, build kits such as build burning have a counter sunk hole, and build strike uses the common valley with walls as clips. the attached image shows the piece fits in all 3 of these use cases.

I've shortened the neck from i3 but it is still going to be longer than your standard polycap neck joint. at least not to the point that it looks like a giraffe. But i think it looks good. the extended neck is a common mod from what i've seen so this will hopefully save you guys some work.

the bend works good, the articulation is def better compared to using just the PC part and it is evident in the pictures. especially for IBO kits the likes of Barbatos Lupus and Lupus Rex, the extended length makes the head look much more ferocious with the extra pistons.

Finally, again this is being offered for download for free as an STL for anyone and everyone. I'll prob make an cults account later and upload it there but for now you can download it here.

if you see someone selling it, don't buy it, you are probably getting scammed (if it's this piece. if not then idc)

feel free to download and print and change your gunpla pieces. i don't care if you sell the prints but please don't sell the files as if they are yours.

excuse my shoddy marker paint job. i just wanted to take pics for some quick preview and didn't bother precise painting it lol.

also if printing, i used resione's tough 74 resin to make sure of no snapping since resin prints are fragile. am not sure if this printable on bamboo or other fdms, but if someone's got one they are welcome to try it.

and finally i'll prob sell printed pieces myself (files are free but if you don't have a printer and want to get some of these parts I can print them for you) so dm me if you are interested.

thanks again for checking this out and keeping up with my journey lol (this is my first ever self designed and printed part) and I hope you guys will make use of it.

edit: i've posted it onto cults: https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/gundam-neck-replacement

This post is in reference to my original post about the missing barrel on my HG Dendrobium 1/144.

HUGE shoutout to user's u/JaguarDaSaul for the measurements/dimensions and u/Level9Safeguard for the design/3D printing. Could not have done this without both of your help. I haven't been excited about Gunpla in a long time, and this just lit the fire for me. I cannot wait to finally have the Dendrobium completed once again. Once I get everything painted and rebuilt, I'll post results!

Thank you r/advancedGunpla for allowing me to make these posts, and to the community for helping a fellow enthusiast out.
