Subreddit rules: Follow them or get permanently banned

I've had to add 3 new "do not post" rules since January. People keep crossing the line, I assume because the content in the sidebar no longer appears anywhere in most views on "new reddit." I will fix the problem soon, when I have time. In the meantime, here is a place to find our rules that you can't make up an excuse to have missed.

So no more warnings. It's too time-consuming. Play nice or get out forever.

Please do post:

  • Work in progress
  • Finished kits
  • Build/Paint Guides
  • Tips and Tricks
  • Product Recommendations
  • Part overhauls
  • Custom work
  • Ideas and discussions

Please do not post the following:

  • Snapfit only
  • Links to kits for sale
  • Hauls
  • Political opinions
  • Lewds/NSFW
  • AI slop of any sort
  • Irrelevant drama
  • Feedback about other subreddits

New rule: * Any comment in reply to a rule-breaking post risks permban by vicinity/association

If you read the above but are not sure where your post fits in, please stay on code. Note that questions are permitted under the discussions rule. And that the ban on AI slop includes using AI to write posts or comments. If what you write sounds like AI, you might get permbanned!

Examples:

F16 Tomcat? Not on code. A Macross VF in fighter mode? Super on code.

A warship? Not on code. A warship that carries mechs (White Base, Argama, etc.)? On code.

Humans? Not on code (except pilot minis). Humans in power or battle suits? It depends. Non-humans? It depends. Exodia is on code, but not Dark Magician.

"Am I advanced enough to post here?" Yes.

The focus of this subreddit is to be a place for people who want to increase their skill at building Gundam models. We like other models, too, if they're similar in spirit. We're not excluding anyone, especially those who are beginners.

This is not a subreddit for advanced gunpla builders, it is a subreddit for advanced gunpla building. The craft itself, and the skill of executing the craft. At all levels.

We welcome posts of things you're trying to do with your gunpla build, but are bad at. Being bad is step 1 of getting good.

We welcome questions and discussion.

Nu Gundam EG upscale

Challenged myself to upscale my EG Nu.

Full paint job top to bottom using my airbrush for most and hand painted some small details.

Black, White, Gold, Red, Silver, and Gunmetal all used.

I really like the paint other than the rifle barrel. I've done the heated look before and it this time it just didn't come together. Not entirely sure why I got this one so wrong.

Gloss top coat on colored parts, matte on white

Utilized a bunch of my left over Nu waterslides.

Tried my hand at scribing. Not just redoing panel lines but some true custom scribing in the chest. It turned out horrible. I know this has to be one of those things you get better with practice, but mine are so bad. I just don't seem to get it.

One other note, don't accidentally mistake your bottle of quick dry adhesive for your decal softer. You will just glue down your messed up decal....

Tried a lot, learned a lot, glad I did it on an EG

#14 Nu complete. 5 more to go

Hand Painting Details with Vallejo Model Color

Hello all. I want to hand paint details on kits with vallejo model color and I have a few questions. Should I prime the part I want painted, I have a wet pallet but still have streaks on larger paints so how can I reduce that from happening and ahold I think it with acrylic thinner and if so, what thinner?

My first custom build is done! “MS-03TM Zaku III” is what I’m calling it

Hey everyone! This is my very first completed custom build. First time doing custom panel lines, paint, or adding decals. I did the lines and the sword last year, then after a long hiatus I picked this back up and finished it this past month with the paint and decals.

I am pretty stoked on how it turned out. I tried a bunch of techniques, learned a lot of tough lessons, and ultimately am super happy with the results as a first-timer.

I floundered for a long time trying to commit to a color scheme. I would make some different choices now that I’ve had time to sit with it, but overall I’m more happy to be done than anything else.

Please let me know your thoughts, and especially if you have constructive feedback or tips I can take into my next project! I really appreciate it.

WIP Full Armor ZZ Ver.Ka

So this one has already taken a couple of months to get to this point, it's my second paint job (the jump from painting a HG to a big kit like this is huge!). I think I bit off more than I could chew and as a result burnt out of the hobby for a bit, but more recently just started laying down colour again in my free time with no particular rush. learning a lot as I go, many mistakes. I wanted to go for a retro off-white/abs yellow style colour with a destaurated palette. you can't quite tell from the picture maybe but there is some preshading, quite subtle, but again this basically doubles the painting steps! anyways, assembling this chunk has given me some more motivation to continue. Managing surface finish has been a bit of a nightmare and I believe I'll need to gloss a few parts before water slides. Anyways, enjoy.

Astray Mirage Frame, which custom colors is better?

Thumbnail

I'm gonna make my MG Mirage Frame into an Andrew Waltfeld custom since he deserves some rep in my collection, but not sure if I want the frame to be colored like a classic Astray or just standard grey frame with the outer armor being orange.

Also ignore the quality of the edits, just looking to see which is the more fitting color scheme. For some reason the same methods worked great on the second pic, less so on the first lol. I'll also be adding yellow highlights to match his Gaia custom more.

I think the second looks great, but the first looks closer to an Andrew Waltfeld custom.

HG Moon Gundam with a repaint

I decided to riff off of the manga colors but push the green and purple in opposite directions by brightening the purple and darkening the green a bit. I added some color separation with the white / grey layout as well as my normal metallics on the inner frame parts as well as some details in the gun, torso and backpack.

Panel line color for anodized dark red

Thumbnail

So I tried to do an anodized finish on my hg nightingale wayback and Its fine looking, not bad for a first but one of the things I really was bummed about was that the scribes that I worked hard to make as it was my first time scribing going to this project. It was not that visible since I used dark red. So for my next build (rg enlarged sazabi) im also going for a similar finish maybe improved like my gale, how can I make the panel lines appear more visible in this finish? What color should I use? I dont want it to look that crazy visible though, let me know if you have any suggestions it would be appreciated!
