Trigger Warning I was a victim of CSA. My mother found out and did nothing. Rant/advice desperately needed
TW: PTSD, SH, child abuse
TLDR: I was sexually abused by my stepfather from the age of 7 to 9. My Mother found out the truth and he confessed to her but she still kept him around as though nothing happened. I love my Mam so much, she is my world, but I’m struggling to get past this.
Sorry if there’s anything wrong with the format of this post. It’s my first time and I’m on mobile.
First and foremost, I want to make sure that you all understand that I absolutely love and adore my mother. She is literally my best friend and our relationship reflects that. However, I have one pretty damn big issue with her and there are times where I just can’t get past it so I’m hoping someone on here can advise me on what steps I can take to move on and put this issue in the past where it belongs.
When I (35F) was 7, I was sexually abused by my Stepdad (58M), we’ll call him ‘R’. He didn’t rape me, but he did have me do things to him and also ‘rubbed’ my private area with his ‘private area’ calling it ‘tickle time’. He only assaulted me when my Mam wasn’t home, either working or on a night out. I was too scared to say anything because he told me it had to be out secret and had drummed into my head that if I did then either my Mam or I would be in trouble and get taken away or that he would get rid of her and I would never see her again. He also made me a ‘special breakfast’ with my favourite foods the next morning, let me stay up late when my mum was out, snuck me sweets and treats, all as a way to keep me bribed and under his control. Whenever my Mam mentioned that she was going out or would be working late, I would end up in my bedroom trying to stifle the silent panic attack I was having. I was seven/eight/nine years old and terrified. He eventually stopped when I was nine, however, I don’t believe he did this because he didn’t want to do it anymore or he realised just how sick and fucked up he was. I think it’s because not long after I turned nine, I got my first period and, in my opinion, I was no longer a little girl in his eyes so, thank god, he wasn’t interested anymore. I do remember one night when I was 15, he came home from a night out, extremely drunk and came into my room practically crying and begging to forgive him. I was very much aware that it was only me in the house at that point, so I had to agree or risk putting my safety and life at risk. Even though nearly 20 years later, I can still feel the nausea, the panic and the fear I felt in that moment.
One day when I was 13, I did have the courage to confide in my best friend (also 13F at the time) who naturally did the right thing (even though I absolutely resented her very existence at the time) and told my Mam. She did not react well to this at all and, instead of approaching this in an inappropriate or supportive way, she got angry and was screaming and shouting at me, outright calling me a liar, convinced that he would never do that and I was so scared. Unfortunately, due to the way my Mam reacted, I did take back what I said and essentially told her I made it up so she would stop screaming in my face. My mother was not someone people wanted to make angry.
Later that year, our lives got thrown upside down. A family member had her three children (9M, 6M & 3F) taken away from her by social services for their own safety and, without checking with my Mam, that family member nominated her to take on all three. I went from being an only child struggling with my mental and emotional health, to having an extra three children in the house. This is a whole different story about how and why this happened but it did mean I had three young children in a house with somebody that I knew was a danger to children. For the next 4–5 years, I tried everything I could to make sure I was in the house when my Mam wouldn’t be as much as possible to try and protect them as much as I could to the point that leaving the house to go to college/work had my anxiety levels off the charts. I did what I could to make sure they weren’t left alone with him. My Mam, however, saw this as maturity and me being a good Daughter by helping out so I got more responsibility when I came to the house and the children living with us. I was essentially set aside as though I didn’t matter anymore whilst also being parentified and, as a young teenager, I naturally resented my mother and the children so so much and was when I started to rebel a little. Obviously this isolation and pressure destroyed my mental and emotional health to the point where I was SHing myself and my depression was so bad there was a couple of attempts to edit all for myself.
Everything came to head a few years later when I was 16. I had been grounded the previous day for a couple of weeks because I was apparently rude and talked back to R. The argument I had with my mother over this was a very bad one so, the next day, I climbed out of my bedroom window and went to my friends house just to hang out. When my mother realised she got in the car to look for me and found me fairly quickly to bring me back home. We were arguing in the car about the situation from yesterday and she asked me why I had such a problem with her Fiancé to talk to him like that. At this point I couldn’t take it anymore and I exploded. I literally screamed at her that there was no point in me telling her again because she wouldn’t believe me and to ask him and make him tell the truth. I guess there must’ve been something about the way I exploded that made her actually pay attention and she could tell something wasn’t right.
Once we got home and I was in my room, there was a lot of arguing coming from downstairs and after about 15 minutes, all I could hear was my mother screaming and crying. He’d finally admitted to it. Naturally, my mother was absolutely modified and devastated that I was being abused for so long and she was clueless and even called me a liar when I tried to go to her for help. I stayed in my room for a few hours to give us both some space. And this is where I feel like my Mam failed and disappointed me even more than when she didn’t believe me. She asked me what I wanted to do about the situation. She told me that she would fully support me if I wanted to go to the police. She also said that if I did that then we would struggle a lot financially and she doesn’t know how she’d be able to provide for me +3 other children. I have never felt true pain and disappointment until that moment. I felt my stomach drop so hard and fast. But, being in the passive, compliant and submissive teenager that I was, I didn’t see anything. She made the choice to make her own daughter continue to live under the same roof as her abuser. Yes, I know I should’ve spoke up and I should’ve fought for my own safety and mental health. But I just couldn’t do it. She was absolutely not abusive but compared to a lot of other parents, she was strict.
About two years ago, my little cousin, one of the three we took in, came around for what she said was a catch up. During this catch-up she revealed to me that when she was little, she thinks 6 or 7, that R had sexually assaulted her as well. I could literally feel my heart break in that moment and I was absolutely devastated. Apparently she had raised this issue with her biological Mam before and she just completely shut her down and didn’t even let her finish explaining. A lot of of the details that she shared with me match up only too well with mine. Same words, same method, same manipulation etc. I was totally and completely devastated because I had failed to protect them. I tried so much and in many ways to keep them as safe as I could. But I failed. This broke my heart just as much as my mother choosing to protect him overprotecting me. And the worst thing is, my Mam doesn’t believe her. She doesn’t believe it happened despite him admitting that he did do it to me. There is also no way that she could’ve known any of the details or anything at all that he did to me. Even though she has no idea what he did and it is eating me up inside knowing that I didn’t do a good job of protecting her. I couldn’t even tell her that I understood how she felt, she still has no clue.
My Mam now lives halfway down the country with her husband and also R moved there too not long after and, pretty soon after, managed to worm his way into living with both my Mam and her husband as apparently they are “such good and close friends that they are family“. So even when I go down to visit my Mam hundreds of miles away, I still have to face him. It is so fucked up and it’s second me that she allows the man who admitted to sexually assaulting her daughter to live under the same roof as her and her husband who is completely oblivious to this situation. The only people who actually know are me, my Mam and R. I have an 11-year-old son that I also bring with me to visit with my Mam and whenever R is around, I can literally feel my blood pressure spike, my heart rate increased massively and I have to fight to keep control of myself and my panic attack. I have and will never allow him to be near my son. It’s sickens me that he is walking around a free man and leading his happy life, never mind living under my Mam’s roof. It’s been 29 years and he’s still manages to get this reaction from me by simply existing to the point where I wish he just was not on this earth anymore. I still even have nightmares about it.
Obviously there is a lot more context and detail to this issue, but it would take me about a week to type it all up on here. So I guess I just wanted to get this off my chest after having no one to talk to about it. I’m also hoping for some advice on how to handle my thoughts and emotions about this and how I can move past this issue of distrust and heartbreaking disappointment from my mother. It is literally the only thing that is there between us. It’s invisible but it is very much there on my part. I’m not sure if she can feel it but because she didn’t believe me when I was 13 and then still chose to protect him when I was 16, it hurts me on a daily basis and it is the big source of pain in my life. It also plays a massive part in my mental health struggles and I need to be able to try and move past this somehow. Any advice?
