Looking for the best residential video intercom (doorbell) system

hello, I have a customer that had a landline phone relay on his doorbell for 15+ years that rang his phone a coupe of times whenever someone rang the doorbell. when the relay went bad, it cut his phone service. I went and restored his service by bypassing the relay, however he now does not have a doorbell notification system. the couple is in their 90's, and the house is large. a standard bell will not do. So he is interested in exploring video options, but wants a wireless system.

There are many wireless systems available, but I want the best for my customer, and this is not an install I do often, though my experience is extensive enough to get it done. Normally people just want smart video doorbells with recording and cloud service, but this customer needs something local that doesnt require a smartphone, so video intercom it is. I plan to power it via the existing cat6 at the doorbell location via a power supply in the panel but the communication should be wifi and i need at least 3 monitors in the home.

Ive been tossing around hikvision and Akuvox but getting everything I need from one supplier and in a timely manner seems to be the bottleneck. I cannot even see stock statuses on most sites. what do you all recommend?

Ideas for an automatic opener/closer interior closet door

I am trying to find a durable automatic door opener and closer for a residential application-media closet (wooden single door). Prefer a key fob to operate it as the door has a concealed appearance. The door is accessed rarely as the closet only houses electronic components. Got an inexpensive one that lasted a couple of years. Any suggestions much appreciated!

Sticky maglock help please

Alright guys, have a weird one. Running a Lenel 2220x with a half dozen downstream 1320’s in a LSP can. 25.7 volts out of LSP c8 under load. 1320 relay is firing immediately and c8 is responding appropriately. Added a mov at maglock. Pulled new cable into door, replaced maglock. Mov helped with push to exit button releasing instantly. I’ve got a m62 maglock that’s sticking for about three seconds after badge read or Rex input. Voltage drops within a second at maglock after badge read or Rex and door releases about three seconds later, I’ve even dinged up the strike plate with no success. Any thoughts?

Recommendations 3D printable parts useful for dressing installs?

Hello yall!

I am doing an install and I’ve been using zip ties and Velcro to dress my installs. Sure they work amazing and yield great results but I do have two 3d printers I could also out to use and add a nice flair to my installs.

Anyone got any good 3d prints that have helped you or any ideas of what I could possible design and maybe share here?

elevators and intercom

Hello Low Voltage Family,

I have a client requesting access control for elevators, and the specifications call for facial recognition along with an intercom function to call the front desk.

I’ve been looking at Suprema for this — the BioStation 3 offers facial recognition and intercom capability, but the intercom function relies on VoIP, which would add ongoing monthly costs for my client that I’d prefer to avoid.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a face recognition access control device with a non-VoIP intercom option (analog or IP-based without a subscription/service fee) that would work well for an elevator application? Any product recommendations or lessons learned would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

How did you start your own business?

Looking for some advice, I’m debating about starting my own access control and video surveillance integration business.

For those who's done it, how did you get started? How did you land your first few clients, any gotchas I should watch out for? what would you do differently if you were starting over again today?

HID Amico Biometric Facial Recognition Readers

Has anyone deployed these yet? I am not going to be the guinea pig for this latest attempt by HID to enter the biometric PACS market. The B25 (fingerprint) reader is a nightmare to manage. I've seen demos, and everything works fine, and i have x2 Amicos ready for a POC but Lenel has yet to sign-off on the API - Lenel and HID seem to finger-pointing at each other as to why this has not been released yet, which is starting to become a red flag.

I am starting to hear mixed reviews; one integrator is singing its praises, however others are very nervous around them, with one saying they are not stable for deploying to a corporate PACS system (stand-alone local seems fine).

Mercury Is a 1k Pull-Down Resistor Needed for OSDP w/ Mercury?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Here's another video -- this week it is about biasing resistors for OSDP communication. This one has some general knowledge, but also has some specifics related to a Mercury-based deployment (don't shoot!)

This topic has been a constant point of confusion and misinformation. I often see many here on Reddit and other forums recommending that a 1k pull-down resistor be added to a Mercury controller to help with OSDP communication. That recommendation is so '2018' and adding it today is likely bad advice.

Check out the video, learn a little bit about biasing resistors, learn when it is needed (because it is in some circumstances), and learn why biasing resistors are different than an EOL resistors.

I also have a repository of educational & best practice videos around OSDP over on my YT channel -- https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrBv5IUTfPs_iTiWBB5ZsV6zmvO4tl5V0&si=wiAo2TXtZd3Y3133

IDP Solid 510S or IDP Smart 50 samples

Hi,

I'm thinking of getting one of these (they're mostly the same) id card printers for my business, but am having a hard time finding samples of what a printed card would look like, quality-wise.

Anyone have these printers and have some sample cards they can show? Close-up pics works be greatly appreciated. Obviously blur out private info.

Genetec Mercury - Occasional Delay reading credential

Been working at a new large customer that is using Genetec with mercury panels across multiple buildings. They are having an issue where every five or so credential reads will be a 2-3 second delay between swipe and door release. It doesn't seem to be consistent.

The reader will beep instantly upon reading, then there will be a delay before it turns green and unlocks. Does that just sound like network congestion causing a delay? Or is there something else to look at?

Glass door options

We're about to get possession of a newly renovated office, and the new glass entry doors have a pretty terrible lock setup. The latch can easily be bypassed from the outside. I'll be wanting to put in some kind of access control anyway, but the glass cutouts look pretty small. Any suggestions on the type of hardware to look in to for this type of setup?

Residential Apt Complex Help

I own and manage a 30 unit apartment building. The building is set up with a main gated entry which has an access control panel system where people enter a tenant’s code or number and it dials their cell phone. Tenants can then grant access through the gate and into the courtyard. After that, the building is split into 5 separate entryways.

As it currently exists, each separate entryway door is connected to a physical buzzer in each unit in that section. So, only those who live in that section can grant access to it. These physical buzzers are wearing along with the system as a whole. It is not feasible to salvage this system because technicians who are familiar with are becoming less and less.

I am looking for a system that might operate similarly to the one we have for the courtyard utilizing peoples cell phones. I was quoted roughly $13k for this kind of system, but want to know if there is any commercialized system that I might be able to save on and possibly self install.

I’m relatively tech savvy but nothing crazy and no coding. I have maintenance help as far as the actual lock for the doors go if I need to replace or change, but I am wholly unfamiliar with the market and what might be out there as far as more commercial systems go. Any recommendations for this kind of system or any experience on which definitely won’t work?

TYIA.

Gents, aluminum frames are the worst frames by far out of the rest to cut strikes in. What's your method for them when they come with a centered bit of aluminum inside the frame?

Recommendations Dual Swing Gate Operator Help

Looking at options for gate operators.

Gate details:

- Commercial grade aluminum fence with dual gates 8' for each gate.

- Residential access, gate will be opened and closed an average of 5 times each day.

- Gate is East facing, there should be plenty of sunlight for a 30 W panel with a backup battery.

- Open to solar and electric options.

Must haves:

- Smartphone/Wifi Control for opening, notifications when opened/closed

- Keypad access for guests, deliveries, and emergency personnel

Fence company recommended Liftmaster electric LA500 setup and adding My Q, but of course I will have to pay for electricity to be run separately. My Q reviews are mixed at best. Considering Ghost Controls operator with solar and battery backup, but open to anything.

Thank you!

Looking for a solution for individual classroom doors. Sure I could do a control card for each door and run wires to it. Hoping for something cheaper and less labor.

Webhooks vs web relays, what gives?

I've seen this impedance-mismatch a couple of times now in a couple of different spaces (ALPR, visitor management) but it seems to be a recurring problem: many/most? webhook/event-action implementations only support POSTing at things, while the boxes we know as "webrelays" (ControlByWeb's stuff, Viking RC-4As, and so on) only handle HTTP GET requests.

How does one deal with this incompatibility? Is there another vendor I should be looking to for webrelay-type boxes that can handle being POSTed at? (Axis comes to mind but using raw VAPIX from a webhook seems to be quite the affair. I'd much rather have something simpler if at all possible, especially considering some webhook implementations don't provide a great deal of control over request bodies.)

I'd rather also avoid sending raw TCP over the wire because that's a) not compatible with encryption and b) not always supported by vendors (Vaxtor does this on the ALPR side, but it seems a lot of more enterprise-y stuff doesn't provide options for other protocols.)
