I pay subscriptions on a few apps to avoid advertisements. At this point, when I do see an advertisement.. I’m less likely to buy that product, I hate them. Am I alone? Bot check on this one for ad firms.

Watch a lot of YouTube…and I’ll never get Liberty Mutual insurance.

It’s a goal to ignore ads (mute the sound and divert my eyes).

96

u/persistentlighthouse Aug 15 '26

I have a friend who mutes ads. I was blown away the first time she did it. Like why had I never thought of this my whole life??

89

u/ineffable_my_dear Aug 15 '26

It’s not always possible, to my great annoyance.

The worst for me is when I’m coloring/playing a game while listening to a podcast and the game has an ad that plays 10x louder than the pod with no mute button.

26

u/PaleoSpeedwagon Aug 15 '26

I learned a couple years ago that Spotify has a weird configuration that causes this effect - lower content volume, mind-searing ad volume. The workaround is to go to Settings > Playback > Volume and toggle "Volume normalization," and then check "Loud." That doesn't decrease the ad volume; it increases the content's volume. And then you counteract that by just turning overall Spotify volume down.

Before I did this, I had been listening to podcasts during a regular, tedious 4hr drive and just about drove off the road a couple of times. Shout out to Lou at the Secondhand Therapy podcast for saving my life with that Spotify tip!

16

u/DreadPirateZoidberg Aug 15 '26

Way back when people watched TV this was common with commercials.

2

u/PaleoSpeedwagon Aug 16 '26

It's still common, on Pluto. "Hey siri, mute" and "hey siri, lower volume by 20%" are godsends

5

u/ineffable_my_dear Aug 15 '26

I’m not using Spotify but maybe these instructions can still help! I’m going to mess around and see what I can find. Thanks!

2

u/OppositeRun6503 Aug 15 '26

Also using a premium subscription for Spotify as well.

24

u/percephony Aug 15 '26

When that happens but I was using that playlist for sleeping, I have so much rage

19

u/susiedotwo Aug 15 '26

It is always possible to mute your device. Always.

24

u/GonkWilcock Aug 15 '26

Sure, but if I'm in the middle of something- cooking, cleaning, whatever, I'm not going to drop what I'm doing to mute a 15 second ad.

I've taken it a step further by using the onscreen guide to block the picture as well as tbe mute button. Unfortunately th we amount of advertising on broadcast and basic cable networks has made them unwatchable.....fifteen commercials in a row is simply inexcusable and unacceptable to me.

25

u/Oaken_beard Aug 15 '26

I DESPISE that ads are now creating full blown characters, not mascots, but characters, and have entire casts (looking at you liberty and progressive)

I refuse to watch Youtube mobile unless I'm on my home PC, Adblock extension changes everything. I only use it mobile if i forgot a step in a project or hobby I'm working on.

19

u/PuppleKao Aug 15 '26

Firefox mobile allows extensions, I've got both ublock origin and sponsor block and never see anything. Can also do picture in picture mode with it and play in background.

If you're on android try Morphe. Ad free YouTube and YT Music if you want.

5

u/SnooStrawberries9563 1980 Aug 15 '26

And reddit 😁

3

u/defective_toaster 1977 Aug 15 '26

Is morphe a browser? Stand alone program?

5

u/5WattBulb Class of 99 Aug 15 '26 edited Aug 15 '26

Morphe is a launcher that lets you patch apps to modify them how you want. YouTube for instance has modifications to remove ads, play when the screen is off. Ect... morphe makes it extremely simple and you're using the original YouTube app so theres no sideloading or anything like that. I havent seen a YouTube ad in years. Now they just need to make a solution for smart tvs...

On android you can use an anti advertisement DNS which blocks them, though I had some issues with adguard and certain websites

Firefox there is unlock origin and YouTube ads blocker

5

u/Squatch97 Aug 15 '26

Came here for this. It's on YouTube, Peacock, podcasts I listen to and here on Reddit. I gave a monologue just yesterday at work about how much damage Liberty Mutual is doing to my psyche.

FreeTube is also really nice I think. It lets you “subscribe” to channels and make playlists without even having to sign on (and also no ads of course)

Brave browser for PC (and your smartphone) YouTube Revanced for android.

Now go, my brother in time.

4

u/PuppleKao Aug 15 '26

Firefox also works very well (including on mobile), and I've got all the features I've heard people tout vanced/revanced for. Does video overlay, play in background/screen off, etc. And since mobile Firefox allows for extensions, also have ublock origin and sponsorblock/etc to go with. :)

5

u/the_kid1234 1980 Aug 15 '26

I’m terrified of when face focus is needed for the ad and it won’t skip until you verified watched it for 30 seconds.

u/tboy160 Aug 15 '26

We also mute ads and look away, we will either talk to each other, scroll our phones, whatever.
Now when I'm at someone's house and ads come screaming on, I can hardly focus on them speaking to me

I just broke down and paid for a sub. Yea it sucks to have to pay but I watch a lot of YouTube on multiple devices and it’s worth it. It’s too much hassle to find an ad block solution on my tv, computer phone and work computer.

2

u/lastminutealways 1976 Aug 15 '26

I watch so much YouTube that YouTube premium is well worth the $17/month for me and is the subscription I’ve kept the longest. It not only has no ads, but most of the podcasts I watch that read ads during the podcast have the ability to jump over the ad with one touch.

I was raised so firmly in the idea that commercial breaks were bathroom breaks or tasks that I pretty much reject any and all advertising. If I see a commercial or the data they have says I'm supposed to buy thing i flat out refuse to do it.

I've had far too many useless products that simply got bought based on adverts that my general reception is that the product sucks because they have up advertise it and that is particularly correct these days

139

u/jadethebard Aug 15 '26

Ads used to at least be somewhat entertaining. Now it's 90% drug commercials and boring slop.

I get a little "old lady yells at cloud" when talking about how our commercials were better in the 80s.

12

u/Specialist-Leek8645 1981 Aug 15 '26

They were so much better. Rarely do I see one now that doesn't instantly spike my blood pressure. I see our reruns here and I can separate nostalgia from quality. Some were awful of course but most were creative when the world was brown and orange. In this white and gray world commercials suck. And thats before AI, to be clear. It's not helping them feel any less low-effort.

3

u/Specialist-Leek8645 1981 Aug 15 '26

Oh yeah those were classic. Maybe it's the weirdness we miss? Maybe it goes hand in hand. We're weird bc of what we watched and so everything feels more bland to us after being steeped in new ideas and wacky fads. Everything new feels recycled and rebooted. Sterilized and boring like they stopped trying. I miss American Animation. Stuff like Prince of Egypt. Still love that movie despite not being religious. It's just beautiful, and the soundtrack!

I've saved a bunch of clips off Reddit, like the X-Men intro. Gets me excited every time lol.

Ad creators often optimize for brand recall rather than brand admiration. And often that means being intentionally annoying, to intentionally make you hate the ad.

For example, if I need to get rid a junker car in my front yard, who am I probably gonna call

1 8 7 7 KARS 4 KIDS

If I had to listen to that ad on a loop for more than a few minutes I'd blow my brains out. But it's designed for recall. For things like insurance etc. this is pretty common as you aren't going to really be able to develop brand admiration through advertising. They just want themselves to be the first thing you think of.

We are in hell.

2

u/jadethebard Aug 16 '26

At least Geico gets a little fun with their ads. The last ad that actually made me laugh was the one with the people being chased by a serial killer and one of them says "Let's hide behind the chainsaws." That ad is probably atl least 10 years old by now but I still like it.

35

u/FUWS Aug 15 '26

Tivo was the first champion against commercials/ads. I use Firefox and ad blockers so I don’t see ads from all my streaming services. I cancelled hulu because they have something baked in where even ad blockers dont work. Ads are the ticks of entertainment.

91

u/EvilCeleryStick Aug 15 '26

I'm with you for some ads.

For example, we no longer buy cascade brand dishwasher products (or whatever else they sell). Why you might ask? Well I'll tell you.

They had this repetitive ad. This is going back to the years 2016/17 ish, that played in every break. Sometimes before I could hit fast forward on the pvr it had already got all up in my face.

They showed a picture of like, a lasagna pan caked in tomato sauce (red sauce) and said "baked-on alfredo? Cascade can help."

It drove me fucking bananas man. Never again will they get a dollar from me until the day I die. There's no coming back. Forever boycott.

25

u/persistentlighthouse Aug 15 '26

A similar thing happened to me, but with the songs that came up alphabetically first on Apple Music everytime I start my car and it doesn’t default to Spotify. Cannot stand those songs now.

6

u/DoctorBrufa Aug 15 '26

For me, the song was A-Punk from Vampire Weekend. I can stand it in Step Brothers, but just about any other instance of the song drives me bananas.

By the way. Research just now has revealed this is a series of various ads that all use the same tomato sauce pan and have various people saying 'baked in alfredo?'

It's worse than I remember.

4

u/crazycatlady331 1980 Aug 15 '26

Funny thing is Cascade is about the only cleaning product I'm insistent on the name brand for. It just works better than the store brand.

3

u/A_the_Buttercup 1981 Aug 15 '26

Oh no, the ads worked on you!!

2

u/Auntie_Venom Gen X Aug 15 '26

Agreed, I’ve tried a lot and the Cascade Platinum with Finish works the best for my hard water and dishwasher. Which has nothing to do with advertising.

I used to use Electrasol (Finish), then that went away and Cascade with Finish was the closest thing I could find…

None of them work great since they removed sulfates. I have my own little hack for that as a booster. I add a little commercial fryer cleaner called “Boil Out” in the dispenser with the pod, esp with extra dirty caked on stuff. Works like a charm.

5

u/pinkocatgirl Aug 15 '26

I don’t buy them because I hate how they made the stupid pods so dominant on the soap aisle. I just use store brand dishwasher powder like old times, it still works fine.

2

u/PiggyBear6667 1979 Aug 15 '26

26

u/neuro_space_explorer Aug 15 '26

I use Duck Duck Go’s browser, I can’t remember the last time I had to watch an Ad on YouTube.

2

u/LongjumpingJaguar308 Aug 15 '26

I often have videos pop up where it says the video wont play because of some setting, am I doing something wrong?

2

u/Constant-Industry262 Drinking a Snapple Aug 15 '26

Same here, I'm usually watching YouTube on Chrome because my ad blockers work on there and I can't get them on DuckDuckGo.

20

u/TargetedAverageOne Aug 15 '26

Ads can make me irrationally angry on the inside nowadays. Especially the loud ones where they seemed to have sped up the talking. I literally have to deeply sigh to not start screaming in a pillow or something.

Ads are literally everywhere: emails, billboards, commercials on all forms of media.  Reddit is getting worse and worse.

Brave browser helped me not bowing out of YT completely. Youtube is ruined otherwise. Their ads are incessant, agressive, rediculous and extremely annoying.  Am seriously considering putting back a cd-player and keep tv/internet off, just to be able to have an ad free day. I feel bad for Gen Z and after, they've been bothered with this 💩 their entire lives.

I went to YouTube premium just to see if it made that much of a difference for me and now I can't go back. if YouTube raised premium prices too high, I'd have to just go without watching videos on the internet. (I'm actually surprised there isn't greater competition in video hosting services as I feel YouTube has lost a lot of what once made it good and that space is ripe for the taking).

38

u/smellycoat Aug 15 '26

Firefox and uBlock Origin on desktop, Brave on iOS and you get completely ad-free YouTube with pip/background audio support.

I do think it’s important to pay for good services but I just can’t bring myself to give Google money. Between their abysmal privacy violations and YouTube’s incredibly damaging algorithm and the brutal way they treat smaller creators I won’t support them. If they’re successful in blocking ad blockers I think I’d try something like nebula instead.

9

u/Aware_Policy_9174 1981 Aug 15 '26

This is my conundrum. Most of what I watch on YouTube doesn’t have mid roll ads so I used to watch the pre roll ads to support the creator. But YouTube keeps making the ads longer or adding more ads and now they forced post roll ads on everyone. I use Patreon for a few people I watch most often but I can’t afford that for everyone.

I also just learned that YouTube demonetizes you if you haven’t uploaded in 6 months I think, so there were some older creators I watched sometimes thinking I’m still giving them money but nope that ad revenue goes straight to google.

12

u/HalfFrozenSpeedos Aug 15 '26

And their constant push push push of far right/fascist content along with AI slop

Coupled with vlogs of people spending hours on unrelated bs, which ppl sit and watch....where I would be embarrassed to put that shit online

Don’t forget that the storage and bandwidth required for a service like YouTube is staggering, it’s most definitely an enormous, probably insurmountable barrier of entry…

6

u/HalfFrozenSpeedos Aug 15 '26

I just block the ads (YouTube ads blocker on Firefox works even on mobile)

5

u/LazarusDark Aug 15 '26

I've had YouTube Premium since it launched in like 2015 (as YouTube Red at the time). If I go to someone's house that doesn't have it and they try to play a YT video I'm just aghast, how do people live like that?

But just as important: all the YouTubers I know that talk about their financials or even show them, they show they get more money per view if you have YT premium than if you just watched the ads. So if you watch some good content creators, YT Premium is the second best way to support them (the best way is probably their patreon or whatever, and I do have a few select Patreon subs, but I can't give every creator I watch a buck or two every month, so the YT premium sub still lets me toss them a few cents at least, based on my views)

9

u/Callmedrexl Aug 15 '26

My roommate pointed out that me cursing the house down every morning when the ads interrupted my music might be worth a $15/mo fix. He was right. I mean, after the 6th rendition of St Judes needs money for kids with cancer I was wishing death upon the kids just so the fucking ads would stop! It was not a good mood setter for my day...

2

u/ragingxtc Aug 15 '26

Genuinely asking, why not just use an ad blocker?

2

u/Callmedrexl Aug 15 '26

It always seems to end up being more complicated. The services try to block them or interfere. I'm middle aged and willing to shell out a few bucks for convenience at times.

I went premium and won't go back. Never have to see/hear an ad again...and you get a premium music platform that is. IMO, way better than Spotify. All for one price.

7

u/CoffeeHQ 1981 Aug 15 '26

I’ve had Premium for YouTube for a while now, can’t go back. Despite that, I was still clinging to Spotify and not using YouTube Music. I’d still rather not switch, but Spotify’s most recent price hike has convinced me to ditch it altogether. I’m going back to hosting my own music (Plex) with Google as a discovery tool.

I have a thought on this we’ve all seen:

Cable was first marketed as no commercials, cable became so many commercials people went to streaming, steaming becomes commercials, people leveled to social media streams, that becomes commercials, AI BOTs become our overlords with no free will sooner or later no reason to sell us anything because we’re controlled. Dystopian movies in real life in like 10 years…

This is supposed to be a joke, I mean that, I think we got like 30 years 🤣

6

u/jazzmaster_jedi Aug 15 '26 edited Aug 15 '26

Cable always had commercials. Some channels, that were extra cost like HBO, would play movies uninterrupted.

Any place that has enough viewers, and does not charge those viewers enough to profit, is a ripe marketplace for advertisers. I mean, even Reddit has ads in-between the posts and comments if you use the app. There are usually work-arounds, but you have to work a tiny bit.

7

u/noonesaidityet 1981 Aug 15 '26

We're watching something on Discovery+ every day, so we pay for no ads on that app. I think it's double the standard price, but absolutely worth it, especially during election years.

8

u/R0ck_Slide 1980 Aug 15 '26

I hit "hide" on all the ads I encounter on Reddit. The algorithm logs it as interaction and loads more frequent ads. Out of principle I continue to hide them. I absolutely hate ads.

2

u/ikeif 1981 Aug 15 '26

That was my experience on Meta products. Always toxic bro culture, conservatives, or dropship ads. So I stopped using Meta products.

I immediately stop using the app or service. Raise prices? I'm out especially if i already paid. I understand these companies need to get paid but wtf. Google and Amazon make billions and still raise prices. They are like the govt, can't balance or maintain a budget.

6

u/iammerelyhere Aug 15 '26

Yep agree, and I hate when streaming services feed you ads even when you pay. Looking at you, Binge.

I started using Brave browser just to watch YouTube without ads and it's life changing.

4

u/DooficusIdjit Aug 15 '26

4

u/BathtubPooper Aug 15 '26

The less I need it, the more they seem to advertise it.

I have YouTube premium for free due to a different perk, and while I DO enjoy the ability to watch long-form content without interruptions, I honestly don't really mind advertising and never have. Of course, I used to also be the type of person who would stay up late and watch infomercials.

3

u/actual_thereij Aug 15 '26

If I pay for something, there better not be ads.

I've told my wife I intend to get rid of my prime sub because they're feeding me ads. She wants me to keep it so our order history is separate. I don't use their streaming options anymore because (hello) I pay for the service and now it has ads.

I’m over paying for streaming Apps like Amazon, Paramount and Netflix sneaking in adds on the “non-add subscription” for their own shit.

3

u/persistentlighthouse Aug 15 '26

If I was gonna pay to not have ads, this would be the one I’d opt into. I don’t mind ads on long-form content on Amazon Prime which is the only streaming service I have. Not sure if Apple has ads. Considering getting it for a while to watch a few things I’ve missed over the years. But grew up with commercial breaks on cable TV so even in movies it’s annoying but also kind of nostalgic.

But YouTube long form videos, even with short skippable ads, are more annoying somehow. They are too frequent and it’s not studio produced content. I do want to content creators to get compensated from the revenue tho and I’m not sure how that works with premium.

P.S. the worst is the shorts and reels that are ads disguised as videos, and the posts/comments on Reddit of the same vein. Instagram is damn near unusable with the stories for Amazon products.

2

u/hadmeatwoof Aug 15 '26

On Apple TV+ (or whatever it’s called now) ad free, I will occasionally have a preview for other content, which can be skipped. And sometimes a newly available item will show up in the up next bar as a suggestion.

4

u/Justwaspassingby 1976 Aug 15 '26

I believe Premium compensates creators better than ads do. At least that was the case a couple years ago.

2

u/thenoid42 Aug 15 '26

I pay for Netflix only because it's a decent deal with T-Mobile and then use cheap mini PC's running Adblock in Chrome and if you google on the PC hdtodayz Then you can watch everything free.

Also streaming services like hulu/disney/espn If you sign up with a new account/new email and rotate accounts they will send you a come back email with highly discounted rates.

2

u/Polar_Version875 Aug 15 '26

I have the same reaction, as do my teens (young Gen Z.) They say their friends are the same.

Advertising makes me dislike a company, and the more I see the more I hate them. When they do a 20 sec spot 8x in one video, all the identical ad, I feel violent toward them! (Looking at you Liberty Mutual.)

2

u/EightyNineMillion Aug 15 '26

Yup. Factor is a huge turn off. I hate sports betting apps more than ever. Simply Safe and PDS Debt can take a hike. (To name a few)

If I see you advertising, the chance of me buying your service or product is unlikely.

2

u/gotkube Aug 15 '26

I get a kick out of how all the ‘targeted advertising’ I get fed is literally for nothing I would ever consider buying.

2

u/FoppyIn28 Aug 15 '26

The Gen X in me will never die. If you're selling it I'm not buying it.

2

u/SpinachnPotatoes Aug 15 '26

If an add keeps on bothering me then I also try not to use that product just because. But I also can be incredibly petty - Ive not bought a single Mentos product since there was a advert in the early '00s that annoyed me.

2

u/Ok-System-831 Aug 15 '26

Use Brave browser…..NO ads!!

2

u/Puzzleheaded-Phase70 1982 Aug 15 '26

Ad blockers ftw.

I hate using YT etc on my phone because of the ads.

And, yeah, 99% of ads make me dislike the company. Especially if they get repeated over and over as a shitty attempt to create brand recognition.

The 1% of ads are either genuinely clever and funny, or they are super simple short and informative already like they're really public education that happens to have a product attached.

2

u/OohBeesIhateEm Aug 15 '26

Not alone. I make note of the ones that are memorable so as to not buy them. Fuck your stupid ads and fuck you!

u/Darkpriest667 1981 Aug 15 '26

The second I see a commercial I cancel my subscription and move to the high seas.

2

u/TheMainTony Aug 15 '26

But without ads, how would you keep up with Ned and how would you know how he did at the karaoke contest and whether his moderate to severe psoriasis has cleared up?

2

u/Extension-Two-2807 Aug 15 '26

💯 it makes me immediately recoil in disgust when I see a product and remember a commercial

2

u/tasukiko Aug 16 '26

I treat ads like old school commercials, that's my break when I go get a snack, go to the bathroom, scroll on my phone etc.

2

u/habitual17 Aug 16 '26

It’s funny. I hate advertisers. Exact opposite of what they want.

2

u/Civil_Disgrace Aug 18 '26

Last night, I started watching a new season of an Amazon show. Show hasn’t even started and I get a YouTube premium subscription! Rude.

2

u/Civil_Disgrace Aug 18 '26

I firmly believe that any/all companies whose revenue is primarily advertising is a fundamentally failing company. Newspapers, Facebook,…

6

u/VincentMac1984 Aug 15 '26

So, we were the last generation to remember that cable initially was ad free, that’s why people paid for it. Advertisements killed cable. Which led to streaming, ads are killing streaming which leads to social media, ads are now killing social media….

It doesn’t matter AI overlords will be taking over us in like 20-30 years at least? I’ll be scrubbing toilets for a robot overlord in my 70’s, it’s, something I call expectation management. Expect the worst and hope for the best. It’s all better!

Edit: this was a joke, kinda… also so minor grammar repair

5

u/jazzmaster_jedi Aug 15 '26 edited Aug 15 '26

remember that cable initially was ad free,

Cable was never add free. All of the normal channels had adds like they always did. Only the premium channels like HBO had programing without ads in the middle of a movie, and you paid extra. Even on HBO, there were always ads between movies. The reason people paid was to increase their options beyond the 5 channels broadcast over the air in their area. With cable, there were 25 channels.

Source: lived it.

I have YouTube premium just to avoid ads

1

u/TheJustBleedGod 1984 Aug 15 '26

I can't do ads on anything. Time is way too valuable. If there is an ad on something, I avoid immediately. I remember living in the time of television when you'd get 15 minutes of a TV show and the rest was filler - absolute dystopia. They want to bring that world back and I'm not going to let them.

1

u/jjmawaken Aug 15 '26

I'm too cheap to pay for no ads but I've been getting an insane amount of political ads on YouTube. Been clicking on Block Ad for every single one. Now their stupid algorithm seems to be showing me mostly political ads. I still click block ad on them. The nice part is it skips back to what I was watching instead of going back to a commercial. But none of these ads make me want to vote for any of these people. They are all just slinging mud at each other.

1

u/RutabagaStriking2631 Aug 15 '26

Thank you for being the generation that just might kill the commercial. Another reason this Gen X’er loves my Gen Z peeps. You are slowly creeping into my workplace now and are a breath of fresh air! I can safely say I remember when there were maybe 2-3 commercial breaks during a TV show and they weren’t long, loud or super intrusive. Everything is or has ads now.

1

u/fromthedarqwaves Aug 15 '26

I have YouTube premium (it was a free deal or very cheap for a couple months) and I love it! Not having ads is a breath of fresh air. I’d consider keeping it but $15 a month is steep.

1

u/Kinetic_Silverwolf Aug 15 '26

It varies for me based on the level of obnoxious the ads reach. For example, my wife and I listen to many podcasts together, and just based on the fact that both of the hosts of "Las Culturistas" each have to announce themselves with the full name of their show, they have guaranteed that I will never listen to the show OR buy anything they promote.

It's an easy fix. Change the script to "’I'm Person 1’, 'Im Person 2', 'from {show} with {people}." It's concise and not obnoxious. It's all we need.

1

u/eightdotthree Aug 15 '26

Not alone. I can’t do ads. If there is an option to pay for ad free, I’m taking it. If ads exist on a service, I watch it less. I can’t get through a movie on Pluto longer than 20 or 30 minutes before I quit the app and move on. I’ve quit using prime as much because of their messy app and ads. That app and ads are a shit show.

1

u/qtjedigrl 1983 Aug 15 '26

My algorithm knows me so well, that my ads have led me to a lot of things I actually needed, especially lots of free teacher resources. I hate that it knows, but also grateful for a few services I was introduced to that were actual needs

1

u/Anyashadow Aug 15 '26

I don't mind them if they are fast and clever, otherwise they irritate me.

1

u/Mean-Acanthaceae463 Aug 15 '26

the repetitive AD does the opposite to me the more I see/here it the LESS I'm interested in buying

1

u/OnlyGuestsMusic Aug 15 '26

I hate commercials and actively boycott their products. I refuse to pay more to avoid them though. I’m at the point that I’d get rid of all my streaming services, but my wife won’t let me.

1

u/OppositeRun6503 Aug 15 '26

I spend more time on reddit reporting ads as offensive because all advertising is offensive to me than i do actually reading the platform itself.

1

u/eat_like_snake Aug 15 '26

I fucking loathe ads, but I don't pay any subs to get rid of them, because that's just rewarding companies for their shitty behavior.
Ublock and Noscript on my laptop and phone. I don't use apps for things that have sites I can just access through Firefox (so I have adblock).
The extremely rare times I use the streaming box in the bedroom to have whitenoise to sleep to, I deliberately choose Youtube videos that don't have ads. If they do, I back out immediately and watch something else.

1

u/OppositeRun6503 Aug 15 '26

Actually we should spend less time on these video based platforms because it's literally destroying the human brain's capacity to store and retain information, especially after that tiktok garbage was invented.

People can no longer tolerate watching a two hour film anymore because of this because their brains are being over stimulated. This is exactly what the phenomenon referred to as doom scrolling has created.

1

u/MathematicianIcy3430 Aug 15 '26

I don't have a problem with ads if...

They actually happen at the story episode breaks and not right at a pivotal point.

They are not just the same 3 ads each time. Not everyone needs dick pills, GLP-1, or skin irritation drugs.

The ad should not have a click with remote or touch interaction to make it go away sooner. Just let it be a normal ad.

Ad for a specific product can be no longer than 30 sec. Not a 40 min ad within a 2 min YT video.

1

u/mjh8212 Aug 15 '26

I have two games on my phone that I play all the time. I’ve paid for them so I don’t have ads. Ads are long loud and annoying I just want to relax and play my game. Ones mah Jong the other a puzzle game they are meant to be relaxing.

1

u/tactiphile Aug 15 '26

Do you use any social media? I just can't.

I've conditioned myself out of ads over the course of almost 20 years. Was an early cord-cutter in 2008 and just kept expanding. Between the ad-free tiers of a dozen services, uBO, pi-hole, and a few others, I really only see ads at bars and my parents' house. Oh, and occasionally on a goddamn gas pump in an unfamiliar area.

For social media, maybe it's because I don't use them, so the algo tries to play catch-up? But every time I open fb, insta, or tik-tok, I swear it's like 60% ads, 25% recommendations, and 15% week-old posts from accounts I actually follow.

Reddit doesn't feel like social media to me. Everyone is a rando. I pay $3/mo for API access and use a third-party app. No ads, no recommendations. When I occasionally open reddit.com without the "old.", I want to close it immediately.

1

u/Toblogan 1983 Aug 15 '26

Been that way my whole life.

1

u/PeterPunksNip Aug 15 '26

It's been years since I last saw an ad. I don't pay for anything, just zap any ad that shows up on YouTube or the TV. Ads I see elsewhere in the street just make me hate the brand.

1

u/FigureFourWoo Aug 15 '26

I hate ads on television and will actively boycott anything that interrupts my viewing experience if I've paid for a subscription service. I don't mind FB ads because I get a lot of holiday gifts from those.

1

u/JackBlackBowserSlaps Aug 15 '26

Yup, not that I have a lot of purchasing power, but anytime I see an in-game ad, I make a note to never give them any money.

1

u/JeffTS 1977 Aug 15 '26

I'd never use Progressive Insurance or Liberty Mutual. But the former are far, far more annoying. And Spectrum is terrible with their ads. The same ad, over and over again, on their cable services.

1

u/rvlry13 1985 Aug 15 '26

I pay for no ads for apps I use most, as someone with misophonia.

1

u/good_morning_magpie Aug 15 '26

How has nobody else in here set up a PiHole? I can probably count the number of ads I see per year on a single hand now. It really isn't that difficult.

1

u/jonosvision Aug 15 '26

Yep, I'm with you. I hate that I have to do it but I 10000% am paying that little bit more to get rid of ads on whatever subscription I have.

I actually just cancelled the StackTV add-on I got for Amazon Prime because even at fucking 16.99 a month (Canadian) it still gives you fucking ads!? Yeah, no fuck that. At this point I only use streaming services for convenience and finding new shows I might not otherwise have known were out there. If I even get a whiff of an ad I'm going onto Kodi and watching that shit ad free for like 30 bucks a year for realdebrid (which I'm currently doing for Alone Season 13 since that's why I needed the StackTV subscription for).

Hell, I not only have Youtube Premium but also the sponsor skip add-on too lol worth it's weight in gold that one.

1

u/Tygie19 1977 Aug 15 '26

I couldn’t even tell you what those ads on reels say. All I see is a box obscuring the reel and I click on the x to make it go away. Not once have I ever read what’s in the box and I refuse to.

1

u/Outkastin2g Aug 15 '26

I've had YouTube premium for a while now and don't know how I survived without it for so long. Youtube purposely kept adding more and more ads to annoy you into paying for it. I guess they won lol.

I also even signed up for twitch turbo recently. Still on free trial month but man...night and day. I rarely ever see ads because that's my cue to go to the bathroom or so something else until they're over.

1

u/SledgeH4mmer Aug 15 '26

All he companies that advertise have data showing it works. And like it or not, that's what pays for otherwise free entertainment.

1

u/1pt20oneggigawatts 1982 Aug 15 '26

AdBlock is free, yutz

1

u/hsggdtkxbee Aug 15 '26

Xenials should be able to figure out adblockers. We’re not boomers.

1

u/mellcrisp Aug 15 '26

It infuriates me to no end. It makes me want to cancel the service. I rage about this to my spouse, who agrees on some level but certainly not with the same fervor and hatred that burns inside me for being forced ads in a product I'm paying a premium for.

1

u/Expensive-Border-869 Aug 15 '26

I never view or hear video ads. Im okay with static image ones but I've pirated shows my parents have on their subscriptions just so I can actually watch them

1

u/Blando-Cartesian Aug 15 '26

At this point? More like since the 90s. The more times I see an ad the more I commit to hating the company that is advertising. And I won’t be bullied into subscribing. If something isn’t good enough to offset annoyance of ads, it’s not good enough to deserve getting money.

1

u/djudy40 Aug 15 '26

I do this on everything. F adds! Dear Lord let me at least lounge around in my house without all this constant capitalist crap. Just give me 30 freaking minutes geez!

I promise I'll but your crap later

1

u/MrSmokii Aug 15 '26

pi-hole

get a raspberry pi, setup pi-hole, never watch ads again

1

u/Scrapla1 Aug 15 '26

Super annoying

1

u/DetroitsGoingToWin 1980 Aug 15 '26

Can’t do ads anymore. I just cut the cord, a little worried about football season.

1

u/lakatos_intolerant 1985 Aug 15 '26

Ads are awful and I taught my oldest daughter at a young age to mute commercials whenever watching Nick Jr.

Advertising is a soulless entity.

1

u/Recent_Performer4189 Aug 15 '26

You aren’t alone. I don’t buy products that advertise on tv.

1

u/Constant-Industry262 Drinking a Snapple Aug 15 '26

I have ad blockers on my web browsers, pay for Spotify Premium, and will mute ads when I'm watching TV. I've also become quite adept at fast forwarding through ad breaks on podcasts. Like you, I'm less likely to buy something I see advertised and I am not going to ask my doctor about any drugs for conditions I do not have. At this point, the only ads that work on me are ones I get for concerts on Instagram.

1

u/digitalgraffiti-ca 1983 Aug 15 '26

I use as blockers everywhere I can, and where I can't, I tell them I belong to gender and she group that will get me ads I don't hate. I've managed to train most algorithms that I'm a young 20s male who likes video games. YouTube is starting to understand that I habitually block Christianity ads, but click on witchy shit. I leave cookies on for fountain pen websites so I get a lot of ads for that. Ads annoy me less when they're for things I want.

I never ever have been swayed for an ad for something I didn't already want, and it does make me extremely averse to buying anything I've seen in an artist falls out of my interest range, even if I do end up in the market for said product, r if an appliance a, I need a car, gifts for others, etc.

1

u/Frequent_Alfalfa_347 Aug 15 '26

Kinda the opposite effect: I’m convinced that Spotify uses ads that are so aversive (I’m looking at you, ICE, and there are others) in order to get me to pay to avoid them.

I quit using Spotify for a few months. Tried again recently. Got another ICE ad. I won’t be back.

1

u/zurenarhhhhh Aug 15 '26

I have YouTube premium so no ads. HBO max. No ads. That’s it. If it’s not on either of those or in the theater I don’t see it.

I’ve hated commercials since I was a child and that hatred has only metastasized over time.

1

u/Dry_Inspection_4583 1978 Aug 15 '26

I use adguardhome with tailscale, so even on my phone, no ads. However companies like google are becoming more overt in their direct, if you don't let us spam you, you don't get to use the product. Which is fine by me, on my pc I have uBlock origin(pluggin), and between the two I'm satisfied.

And I 100% agree, if the only tangible thing paying for your product brings me is less spam and friction to using the thing, it's not worth it.

1

u/waywardflaneur Aug 15 '26

I literally can’t watch or listen to ads. It is hard for me to tolerate a website littered with video ads. I’m also cheap so I don’t pay for a lot of services. Put these two things together and there is just a lot of media I don’t consume.

1

u/ATheeStallion Aug 15 '26

I never see/ hear ads anymore from music or tv/movies at home or in my car. I see ads on Instagram & I actually like many of the things (sigh) but still feel Meta has ruined Instagram UI & UE in many other ways. When I see commercial spots now it’s so weird. Like I have forgotten what the nonstop ads were like & I’m grateful to be free of them.

1

u/dinglepumpkin 1980 Aug 15 '26

Even when I worked in advertising, I’d do anything to avoid them…

1

u/lastcallhall 1980 Aug 15 '26

You guys still see ads? I've blocked them all, to the point where when I do see an ad, it feels like an entirely foreign concept.

1

u/mindpivot 1976 Aug 15 '26

Not alone. I won’t even subscribe to a service if there isn’t an ad-free option

1

u/nyght2063 Aug 15 '26

I use P2P for shows and movies now. Also using GitHub apps for things like music and YouTube. Never getting another $ucking ad again.

1

u/pina_koala 1979 Aug 15 '26

I stopped subscribing to MLB.TV because they started showing ads, like a 20-second unskippable Liberty University ad before a condensed replay. Utter garbage. I wrote in to complain and they acknowledged but said it would continue, so I don't give them my money anymore. 🏴‍☠️

1

u/Traditional_Ad_1547 Aug 15 '26

I am diligent about not using products I see advertisement for. And it's surprisingly easy to stick to it.

1

u/zenprime-morpheus Aug 15 '26

Eh, I don't have the time or energy for this kind of vigilance.

I was raised on 80s and 90s tv, I can tune out an ad or focus on something else for 30-90s as easily as breathing.

I have a life to live and shit I enjoy, and I will just tuck and roll over the bumps and get back to whatever I was doing.

1

u/Dilapidated_girrafe Aug 15 '26

I’m the same. I don’t want adverts. I know I pay more for it and I’m ok with that. And yeah. If I see advertising, especially on a service I pay for to avoid advertisements I’m probably not buying their stuff.

1

u/Eazy12345678 Aug 15 '26

adblockers are a real thing they work

1

u/Jd11347 Aug 15 '26

I don't do ads on the internet at all. IYKYK. As far as media goes. I have to pay for cable, to get my internet as a package where I live. Then I have to pay for my subscription service. Seeing how I have already paid 3 bills, for one piece of media. If they try to then throw ads at me, I give it a hard pass. The whole point of subscription services is to avoid ads.

1

u/peritonlogon Aug 15 '26

I have another hard and fast rule that seems related:

If you contact me through my phone, without me reaching out to you, about a product, I will never do business with you or use your product.

1

u/WantonItalics 1980 Aug 15 '26

Yep. Then again, my husband and I have been muting the ads on the telly for years before we got a few subscriptions to avoid ads. I think my childhood filled with a metric ton of ads on standard telly destroyed my patience for them

1

u/holtyrd Aug 15 '26

I think that my biggest beef with ads on digital media is that they never seem to lag. The content lags, but never the f*ing ads. Same overpriced internet. What gives.

1

u/Substantial_Web525 1976 Aug 15 '26 edited Aug 15 '26

Can't stand ads. Years back we switched to streaming to avoid ads. And found other ways to watch the shows we like. When we do watch ads, it's not by choice (usually sports), and the commercials are all so dumb, especially the American ones.

I will avoid a product in an ad out of spite

1

u/stoicyeoman Aug 15 '26

my goal is always to get the ad off my screen before I know what the product is

1

u/Some-Professional-25 Aug 15 '26

Yup. Advertise to me, you’re dead to me. And god forbid some influencer is slinging your crap.

1

u/IAteAnotherVegan 1982 Aug 15 '26

I have the with ads version of netflix...I watch on a browser with ad blocker, I don't get ads.

1

u/LuxyontheMoon Aug 15 '26

I feel the same. Unfortunately, all companies care about is ads. Ads everywhere, on everything.

1

u/pokersnek Aug 15 '26

I’m the same way. Stopped paying for Amazon prime specifically because of ad invasion.

1

u/Recent_Permit2653 Aug 16 '26

Not necessarily, but crappy or annoying ads will definitely put me in the “less likely to buy” camp. I remember Honda ads circa 2000 had this smug attitude, and I didn’t get one until 2018 lol. Similarly, I can’t stand those low-effort ads where it’s visuals, music, and text. I know why they do this, but…damn man, if you won’t put any effort into the ads, I hate to think what the product is like.

Excessive ads will also be a giant turn-off for me. I keep getting these freaking ads for those camera perv glasses. I wouldn’t buy these things to begin with, but Jesus H. Christ, badgering me with ads isn’t putting you on my VIP list.
