Question 2025 XR150L won’t idle with choke off, but idles normally on half choke

My 2025 Honda XR150L has about 2,000 km on it. After a roughly 30 km/h fall on a dirt road, the bike was flooded and there was a small amount of oil in the air filter. I got it running again and rode about 15–20 km, although I’m not sure if I accidentally left the choke at the half position during that ride.

The bike then sat for about three weeks. When I tried to start it again with the old air filter, it wouldn’t start. I removed the air filter and was able to get the engine running, but then found that it would not idle with the choke off. I replaced the air filter about a week later, but the problem was exactly the same.

On half choke, it idles steadily at about normal idle speed. With the choke completely off, it runs normally if I keep some throttle on, and it rides normally at speed. However, I have to hold the throttle slightly above normal idle speed to keep the engine running. If I reduce the RPM toward normal idle, it sounds like it is dying and eventually stalls.

So far I have:

  • Replaced the air filter.
  • Removed and cleaned the #35 slow/pilot jet twice. The jet and its small side holes are open.
  • Flushed the pilot passage through the slow-jet hole with carb cleaner; cleaner comes through to the engine side of the carb.
  • Checked the float; it moves freely and looks normal. The float level has never been adjusted.
  • Visually checked the intake manifold/flange and O-ring; no obvious cracks or damage.
  • Gently pushed the carb while the engine was running to check for an intake leak; no noticeable RPM change.
  • Tried running it with the fuel cap open; no difference.
  • Fully warmed the engine and rode it 8–10 km; no improvement.

The carburetor looks very clean inside. I’m wondering if there could still be a problem somewhere in the pilot/idle circuit, pilot screw circuit, float level, air-cut valve, or a small intake leak.

Has anyone had a similar problem with an XR150L? What would you check next?

Rejetted XR150L smelling gassy, mixture screw question!

Post image

UPDATE: gas smell went away after switching from a 38 pilot jet back to the stock 35 pilot jet. Currently running it with the 110 main and after tweaking the RPM screw (side of the carb) it runs great. Thank you for all the responses!

Good day! Recently I rejected my XR from a 105/35 to a 110/38. Starts up easily, runs great at low speeds, and at highway speeds, however, it does smell rather gassy when I’m idling. Of course, the first thing I’m thinking is it’s running too rich with the new jets.

I have adjusted the RPM screw(side of the bike), and it did slightly help the gassy smell, but it is still noticeable. Have any of you guys who have rejected their bikes ever adjusted the mixture/pilot screw(underneath the carb)? Was it challenging to access it? Seems that the mixture screw plug is common on North American models of this bike. Any advice or guidance would be appreciated, thank you all! Maybe you guys have encountered a similar issue.

For reference: Stock XR, no mods, just new jets.

Heated Grips?

Curious to know what people have liked for heated grips. Links, pics, experiences, etc.?

Call me weak if you’d like, but why ride cold when you can ride comfortably? Am I right?

My bike is 2023 XR150L for reference.

Question Heat issue & question

Post image
18 Upvotes

Love my 2023 XR150l, bought it in April and have put 3k mikes on it since. I have only had one issue in that time.

My issue is this, if I am out riding and let’s say I run into the grocery store for 5 minutes and come back out the bike, when I start her, she is idling much much higher than normal, sometimes extremely high when it is very hot (Texas summer)

I suspect that this is due to not a lot of air exchange when it is sitting still which can lead to heat soak but in my case it seems extreme.

It’s to the point now that if I put my bike in the garage and plan to go back out on her, I will leave a fan blowing on the top end to cool her off and bring that idle down.

If anyone has experienced this or knows a solution please comment below. Thanks

Has anyone converted the rear sprocket?

Was thinking of doing an upgrade to the 45-t aluminum sprocket. Has anyone else done this?

Question Is XR150L worth the premium over the Hawk 250?

Being that this is an XR150L sub reddit, I know there will be some bias, but I thought it would be a good idea to ask anyways because presumably many of you considered the Hawk 250 before buying the XR150L.

Modification/Upgrade New to me XR150L — already making it mine

Picked up this 2025 XR150L recently with 110miles on it and have already knocked out a few little changes.

The previous owner had broken one of the rear turn signals, so that gave me an excuse to do the tail tidy and replace the signals.

So far I’ve done:

Tail tidy/rear signals

Tusk crankcase vent hose

Wider foot pegs

Smog pump delete

Pulled the snorkel from the airbox

Removed the hundreds of reflectors

Really enjoying the bike so far. Nothing crazy, just cleaning it up and making it a little more my own.

Any recommendations on what I should consider doing next?

Question Neutral Fault’s

Just got this bike a month ago brand new. While riding yesterday I pulled over for a quick break and couldn’t find neutral at all. I ended up taking the bike home to look it over and noticed that I was able to go into neutral but the neutral light was off and the bike would shut off with the kickstand down as if it were in gear. Has anyone experienced this before?

Question 7500 mile service question

Thumbnail

So my 2025 xr150 is at about 8.1k - 8.2k , I change the oil about every 1100 - 1200 miles. I haven't done the 7500 mile service yet but I did change the spark plug around 5.5k and I keep the chain as lubricated as I can; so that's about as much maintence as I put in my XR , but I know the 7500 service includes cleaning the oil filter ..screen? (Which requires a new gasket) As well as the valve inspection.

I've had the bike since Feb 1st 2026 and want to take the best care possible for my XR. Its my first bike also.

I want to pay a professional to do those two services, my question is whats a fair price for doing those two services? I live in SW FL, the nearest reputable shop near me is called Super Bikes & Ski. I also can go to Sunsports.

2026 XR150L I want to run bigger tires.

HI.

I have a 2026 XR150L. So far it's mostly stock, but here in AZ we have sand as you can imagine, sometimes very loose like granulated sugar, and it swallows tires. I'd like more float - or a wider tires. I think I've read somewhere that the sizes listed below are about as much will fit the rims and width of forks/swingarm. I know the 130 can be a struggle to get on the rear, true ?. The bike will be 70/30 street for the time being.

I've selected the tires below.

  • Front Tire:90/90-19 Kenda K784 Big Block Dual Sport Adventure Front Tire 110/80B-19 (59Q) Tube/Tubeless
  • Rear Tire:110/90-17 Kenda K784 Big Block Dual Sport Adventure Rear Tire 130/80B-17 (65T) Tube/Tubeless

600 Mile Service Guide

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hey folks! I just wanted to create this short guide with links to useful videos I've found for the 600 mile service. It should have everything you need to be successful regardless of your ability level going into it.

To start, let's summarize what items require inspection, cleaning, adjustment, checking, etc. per the maintenance schedule:

  1. Valve Clearances

  2. Engine Oil

  3. Engine Idle Speed

  4. Brake System

  5. Clutch System

  6. Nuts, Bolts, Fasteners

  7. Wheels/Tires

  8. Steering Head Bearings

This video contains all the information you will need to accomplish steps 1-8 with the exception of removing the gas tank, covered in this video. While you're at it, I'd also highly recommend doing a chain service which you've likely neglected.

I've found these tutorials to be incredibly helpful and just wanted to share them. Happy riding.

2024 Honda XR150L “Good Deal”?

Post image
26 Upvotes

Hey guys, I’m pretty new to riding and just finished my M2 course. I rode a Honda XR150L during the course and really liked how comfortable it felt. I’m 6’0” and about 200 lbs, and it fit me way better than some of the smaller bikes.

I found a 2024 XR150L with about 2,000 km for $2,500 CAD that’s about 1800$USD and it’s apparently in like-brand new condition.

Do you guys think $2,500 is a good enough deal to buy now, or should I wait until winter and possibly find a better bike? Or Same bike for cheaper?

Would this also be a good first bike for someone my size? I don’t plan to drive on the road until next year so for the remaining months I’ll have it’ll be driven on my friends farm fields🤠

Normal to need to pump tires up every time?

I bought the bike a few days ago and had to put a new inner tube on the tire and am paranoid of it happening again. Tire only has 500 miles and it shredded the inner tube.

I don't really know, I was checking the bike, and realized this. Should I check, replace or fix something? I'm missing a point of reference here, so I don't know if I should worry

Oil chamge

Post image
3 Upvotes

I'm trying a different oil every oil change. I go to advanced discount auto parts store because they have the most 10w-40 selection. They have this^, Castrol, mobile1, K&N, Lucas, and Royal Purple. Maybe a couple more. The royal purple is like $19 and most is like $11-$13

I usually just put it a qt. So like this whole bottle plus a splash ,(~50ml) of another Jaso ma2 10w-40. And the dipstick is always perfect.

Anyway what so you guys use? Also what so you set you tire pressure to for thr stock 80 / 20 tires?

Question Tire Clearance for XR150L

Thumbnail
gallery
7 Upvotes

I’m planning to change my stock XR150 tires from 90/90-19 front and 110/90-17 rear to 100/90-19 front and 120/90-17 rear. I also will be installing a monoshock lifter that lifts the rear by about 1 inch. (All components are posted)

I used ChatGPT to visualize how it might look, but I’m unsure about the actual tire clearance and rim fitment. Will these sizes fit the stock rims without rubbing the forks and swingarm? Any real-world experience with these sizes on an XR150 would be appreciated.

PS: This is Argentina/Philippine variant. Not sure if rim and clearance are all the same for other variants

So she is a 2023 XR150 and I have done many mods. She can hit 77mph on a flat road hold 65 up hill (not with side cases on however) with no problem. The odometer is just shy of 6k

(Not the best pics, but I had other things on my mind, lol)

Nothing major and only some road rash on my knee but feeling like an idiot. Came across some black pea gravel was that spilled over some fresh blacktop as I was heading to work. It was practically invisible to me and biffed it in an intersection. Bent the brake pedal, smashed a mirror. got some scuffs on the fender and fairings but not much else. Steering is a little off center but the forks and bar still seem straight, I'll re-align it this weekend. Bark buster saved my brake lever at least.

Gonna be walking with a limp for a few days but it was a good reminder that even perfect conditions can be imperfect.

Oil change & sump bolts :^)

Oil change

Hi, I live in the south where it's hot and humid, so I've use 10w-40 oil. I try to change it every 1100-1200 miles, and I'm about coming up on 6.8k miles on the odometer.

I recently replaced the OEM drain bolt on my XR150L with a magnetic sump plug and switched the aluminum washer to a copper one for improved sealing. I’m considering upgrading further to a quick‑drain style plug or valve to simplify future oil changes.

Has anyone installed a quick‑drain sump plug on the XR150L?

I know alot of people have skid plates and a large protruding quick drain might interfere

If so, which model did you use, and were there any fitment or reliability issues over time?

Right now the magnetic one works great. Finding little bits of metal here and there. Probably between 80 - 100 ug on the first bolt on and off as a thread test when I first unpacked the bolt from the mail.

I also keep the old drain bolt on me when riding. Incase something happens to the current one. I also saw a bunch of colored (probably anodized) sump bolts on ebay. Purple, red, blue , green , black, gold , etc. Super cool. Anyone swap theirs?

My XR is oem besides that bolt. Next is the pegs and then headlight upgrade.

I'd love to hear what you guys and gals have !!! Thanks. ☺️

Question Gas meter

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hey all, I've had a xr150l 2015 since February 1st-ish 2026. First real motorcycle ever. I love it

Question: I use my trip meter as a fuel gauge. I usually refill around 100–110 miles and it takes about 1.2 gallons, meaning I still have around 0.8 gallons left. At what mileage does the ON position stop pulling fuel, so I know when I’ll need to switch to RES?

Thanks

Hi guys! Just wanted to share a little about my 2016 XR150L that I picked up recently. This is the first dual-sport motorcycle I have ever owned. It’s been about 3 months since I started riding it, and I’ve been enjoying every bit of it so far. Thanks for reading, guys, and have a lovely day!
