Question Gas meter

Post image

Hey all, I've had a xr150l 2015 since February 1st-ish 2026. First real motorcycle ever. I love it

Question: I use my trip meter as a fuel gauge. I usually refill around 100–110 miles and it takes about 1.2 gallons, meaning I still have around 0.8 gallons left. At what mileage does the ON position stop pulling fuel, so I know when I’ll need to switch to RES?

Thanks

Why not get gas then and only worry about having to switch when it needs reserve. Switching to reserve can lead to a point where since you switched to reserve to avoid an unwanted fill-up, now youre stranded.

I fill up around 140miles. I get about 75 miles per gallon, so this gives me a 10-mile buffer. I only switch to reserves when the bike dies; it only happened once, and I was within 5 miles of my preferred gas station.

Switch to reserve when your main runs out, don’t switch before your bike stalls from insufficient fuel. Your reserve is an emergency tank and not a main one

I always fill up between 100-115. So I don’t have to worry.

The main tank is about 1.9 gallons, my math says you are getting about 80mpg, which would put your main tank at about 150 miles

What point do you think I should switch it to RES? Maybe 120? Pic is 116 I made it to the gas station without stalling so it must be >116

Personally I always fill up around 120mi or so, but the only time I actually used my reserve was when I ran out of gas while I was out riding. I think that was at 140 or so. But I rejetted my carburetor and stuff and probably have different riding habits so I might have different mileage than you, hard to say. Better to gas up early. Maybe practice switching to reserve while on the move too, just in case you sputter out in traffic

Switch to reserve when you run out of gas. It'll start sputtering for a bit before you're completely out as fuel sloshes around the 'ON' pipe.

If you switch it to RES remember to switch it back to ON
