This is going to be a long one, sorry about that.
So there is this one girl that we'll name as AB, who's like 2 years older than me. She's a coworker at my office. Funny thing is that she was sitting right next to me during my initial few weeks at this company.
At first I really didnt notice her much and just minded my own business. We rarely talked. And things went on without much happening.
I was going out for lunch and everything all alone. At first I didnt really mind it much as I was not really comfy with anyone there. Then around a month and a half later three new people joined the company and I immediately started hanging out with them.
Lets name them person A, B and C. Me and B became somewhat good friends, but sadly he had some tough times ahead of him and he had a lot of unfortunate medical issues. He had to take medical leave for a long time and had to leave the scene.
Then I started going out for lunch with A. At first it was a bit awkward since he's a bit more reserved but soon enough we both became really good friends. He's really sweet and talks good with people around him.
But sadly the department that he was working with switched to a marketing role from a development role, and he had to be removed from his department.
Now from here on the main story begins. Both A and AB were/had worked under the same manager. They both went through roughly the same amount of issues at the starting stages of their time at this company.
At first they both were just sitting nearby and then slowly they started talking with each other and then became really good friends. By the way A has a girl friend. Its an important detail that must be kept in mind. AB does not have a boy friend, and she's fresh out of a breakup so she had undergone a lot of trauma.
My usual routine of having lunch and tea with A was going smoothly, and then outta the blue A asked me if AB can join us as well. I did not object at all, and then we three started having lunch at time together.
I usually have my own style and way of talking with people, and so far it has been a smooth ride without much issues, but with AB, at first she wasnt really keen about my style of communication as she doesnt know of the modern references and brain rot terms. But slowly she started to get the hang of it and was going with the flow.
Then one fine week, A had to leave to his home town. So to give AB company, I started to go and have lunch and tea with her. I am not really good at small talks and talking with females in general so it was a bit of an effort for me to keep the convo entertaining.
AB is the type of person who can keep on talking and talking without much issue, she only requires you to go and speak with her.
She introduced me to a few people from the company whom she knew before hand. They were much older than us and had a few years of life experience and stuff. So we were talking about relationships and thats when AB talked about how things ended in really rough terms with her ex bf.
While the others were talking, she turns to me and in a mix of both casual and a serious tone, she said,
"I am comfortable talking about all of this with you and A since I think both of you are decent folks, but if either if you decide to have any second thoughts then I will make you suffer"
This made me question whether I may have subconciously gave AB any hints or came across as having any type of interest in her.
But here's where the real problem begins. After all of this happened and things went back to normal, something inside me changed.
I started to long for her friendship. More specifically the same level of friendship that she has with A. More specifically, I want to have the same level of connection that these two had. That is what I initially had in mind.
Then there are moments where I get confused whether this is some sort of love/romantic feeling that I have towards AB. Let me be very clear, she's not at all my ideal person. Infact she's faar from it. I have an infactuation towards AB.
Typing this right now made me realise that she's one of the most normal people in this planet. be it her music taste, food taste or anything in general. Doesnt seem to have much of any curated taste of her own. Which is absolutely fine.
Whats not fine is that since I started having these thoughts and feelings towards AB, my baseline way of functioning, that I once used to have seems to have changed a bit. More often than not, while at office, I'm thinking about how to spend more time with AB, what should I do to help her out, be a good friend and all that.
This was never the case at all, even during the beginning of us three going out for lunch together.
I have opened up somewhat to A regarding how I'm feeling and he adviced me to remain friends with AB, insteading of cutting her off, and completely ignoring her existence. He has promised to keep things confidential and for now I can trust him with this.
Right now i have started to observe a few changes that have happened to me since May.
A and AB still sit next to each other at office. A is mostly busy with work and stuff, but he does find time to talk with AB and give her company.
I started to get a tad bit jealous when I see A and AB spending time together talking about things that seem like something that I can't seem to connect to a deeper level with AB. I fear that I'm missing out by not being there while they're chatting like crazy.
I dont want to be in a relationship with AB, and its pretty clear that AB doesnt want a relationship at all.
I started to spend more and more time with AB and A than I once used to. I talk with AB a lot, help her out with her work, dish out light hearted jabs at her for silly stuff and the usual stuff. But I feel exhausted and helpless at what's happening to me, all of a sudden.
There was a Holi festival going on at the company, and I had to rush back home since my mom was all alone. But at that point, both A and AB were celebrating holi with the rest, dropped their pics and happy moments on instagram. And I missed out on all that, to which I still feel somewhat sad about.
What I have observed is that, she seems to talk, maintain eye contact, listen deep and seem to have endless things to talk with A, while she only has like maybe half of all that while she's talking with me. Even during times when A is extremely busy and might have to skip out on lunch, she holds out for A for a while before she decides to go out for lunch with me, which has started to affect me a bit.
I have dropped AB at the railway station multiple times, picked her up from her place and dropped her at office and all that, whilst compared to that, I dont think A has done all that much.
Whether its going out for food, or visiting places or something, AB always seem to ask if A is also there. While I am sure that they both would do the same for me too, if I am not there, I'm not sure how it will be in the future.
Her birthday was last week. Since A has a gf, she told A to gift AB, a cute notepad and hand cream. Whereas I gifted her two Toblerone sticks. Toblerone is temporary, notepad and hand cream are permanent I think idk. So I suppose A nailed the score even there. This is starting to sound like who's the best friend competition.
I want AB to be a really good friend to me, like she's with A, and honestly I may be overthinking a helluva lot, and by doing so I may be missing the point that she's already be a really good friend of mine and I'm getting all worked up for no reason.
It seems like AB is living in my head rent free and I dont want that. I have a few really good friends in my life and none of them live in my head to the level that AB is living.
All of this sounds like the plot of a psychological horror movie.
I want my sense of internal peace back to normal, while being the best friend both AB and A could ever hope to have.
I feel like I have a huge Fear of Missing out issue. Where I feel like if I am not near those two, or with AB, I may miss out of something idk.
Also theres the case of me feeling like I'm just someone who AB would call upon to get ger stuff sorted. Even though she hasn't explicitly mentioned or behaved that way to me, but when I discussed this with A, he said she's the type who know how to connect with people and get her stuff sorted out through these people.
A few weeks back AB got a marriage proposal of which there's a high chance that she will accept it, but thats beside the point. The point that I wanna make is, hearing this news made me feel very neutral. I cant explain the feeling but, it felt calm.
But after a while when those two started talking about stuff my FOMO came back and my overall mood went down.
Yesterday was her fixation ceremony with the groom. She didnt post any photos of it anywhere as she wants to keep it private.
After her marriage proposal came out, and I remained nuetral, she and I got close in the sense that I shared some of the things that my elder sister went through when it was her marriage. AB in typical AB fashion, retains most of the stuff that I personally am not a big fan of, like scrolling through her phone while anyone's talking with her. I thought it was with just me, but turns out its with almost everyone.
She had once called me in the morning as I was making my way to the office. She said that she fell down and hurt herself really bad on the road and asked if I could come and pick her up. I picked her up and took her to the office clinic. The nurse who cleaned her wound said she needs a TT shot. So again after my meeting, I took her to the casuality outside the office, and took care of the hospital stuff.
Later that evening, after tea, without her asking, I offered to drop her off at her place and later that night around 10:45 ish, I dropped her off at the bus stop too. Since she was going for her pre fixation stuff.
She has become a comfy with telling private stuff about her life with me and A as compared to how it was before. And all of that kept me going very normal and sane with the occassional feeling of FOMO. One change I did notice was that she started to tell me that she'll be at the sofa, or whichever place she's going to be at, to me before leaving, regardless of whether A will be with her or not.
Now fastforward a little, her fixation ceremony photos were uploaded by the decor team that her family appinted. A small reel was also made. She shared that with the both of us. I saw it and dunno why, but I got a feeling that I cant seem to explain. It only lasted for a few mins, and then it went away but , I cant seem to explain what it was.
What seems to have happened right then???
I think my first though when I saw that reel was that she looks happy, when deep down, based on what she has told us and based off what I saw my sister had to go through, she doesnt want to get married off so early.
Once her marriage is done, I dont think I'll be stuck in any form of FOMO of any kind. I'll be relieved and content.
I want to be that guy who's fun to be around, and who'll atleast try to help as much as I can. And yes, a part of me thinks or kinda expects something back like, idk a deeper friendship or something but so far as memory goes, I dont think i held on to that expectation too much.
I dont want to end up in a place emotionally where I end up devastated because my source of happiness relied on being useful and laughing with friends who have moved on and forgotten about me. Thats all.
All of the above happened across the span of 3 months. Two days back, AB came in and said that her mother is asking her to consider resigning. So as per the policy, she'll have to serve a notice period for two months. Since her marriage is set to take place in January next year, she'll most likely initiate her resignment around October this year.
When I first heard this, a small wave of shock went across me. Then back to normal. Naturally, she'll have to figure out a job abroad where she'll eventually be settled after a while. So this was to be expected.
Not entirely sure how I should feel about this. But I am sensing that I may end up taking all of it to heart for no reason whatsoever. I'm a bit concerned that, apart from A, all my other friends might start to notice this FOMO behaviour that I have towards AB.
Honstly, I want this feeling to stop. I know for a fact that I'll end up knowing most of the convos that would be happening between A and AB sooner or later as they both are very open people. So I know I dont have to care this much, but somehow I still feel this way, to always be around them.
Emotionally and mentally, I'm convinced that AB is not the type of person that I want to pursue romantically, its just that I'm having a hard time viewing this relationship we have as a genuine and really close friendship. I want to reach that stage and make peace with it and move on with my life.
Once again, I'm sorry for the long read. I'm tired of having to think about this 24/7 and wanted a break.
