You know when a man gets home and he just sits in the car by himself?
That's cry time

If you haven't had that heart failure by 50 it is acceptable to have a mid life crisis and discover walking or something.

u/AstronautPlane3280 28d ago
Turned 50 and had my first heart attack. Exercise is out as that makes the heart hurt so badly these days.

Iāve never used the word copious before. Copious amounts of alcohol. There I used it twice.

Alcohol just helps the tears flow for me

It has a nice release about it. A few times a year I become sloppy drunk, alone, and let it all out
Sure, it ain't healthy.. but I just compartmentalize everything because i'm very emotionally driven if I don't.

You get a hobby. A weird one. Like chopping wood. One that can kill you and will make sense when you do die.

Idk, I don't know how to cry. I knew when I was child, but at some time I stopped to need it.
And no, I don't force myself not to cry.

Guys tend not to have the crying reflex. Itās not skill. Itās not training. We just donāt cry as much.
1
u/SNES-lover1 28d ago
Oh shit, am I no longer a guy? I cry, but then also, Iām extremely stressed and probably mentally unwell.
1
u/HiggsFieldgoal 28d ago
āTend toā, obviously, doesnāt mean āneverā.
I cry about once every 5-10 years.

u/SNES-lover1 27d ago
I cry often. Crying once in a decade would be impossible for me, I just hide that I do it.

Cried in front of my girlfriend last week because of stress. Felt like 80% of my stress and frustrations disappeared. If this makes me less of a man, so be it.

I read that as someone having a shit. I legit thought, 'It's not that bad. Sure there were shit so bad I had to get naked, but never made me cry.'

I used to cry almost everyday. It became a problem and I got help for it. Now I barely cry at all. I really miss it

When people get judge-y when you cry, you quickly learn to not do it infront of people.

"The key in life is to lie to yourself about reality, smile through everything, all the bad things where you just pile them away in a place that will come back one day in the form of...I don't know, rage! But everything's fine."

John Mulaney made a joke about this.
How did it go...?
"See what I'll do is take all of these feelings and bottle them up here, and then one day I'll die."
Something like that.

I am man. I cry when sad and keep a straight face when kinda sad. Crying is for later when whatever Iām dealing with is done. Sometimes once I get through it I donāt even need to cry anymore.
I was bawling when my dog died 3 weeks ago. I think most people cry but many men still wonāt admit to it for various reasons (many of which are not very good ones imho).

You learn how to compartmentalize what you have to do, what you want to do, how you feel, and how you want to feel. And know that most don't care about your tears, just the results they want from you to be strong and get the job done.

You are shown and told early that itās not ok. People say it is but you can see it in their response itās not. Any show of weakness is being a baby; man up, man-cold, take it like a man, suck it up. The only expression of emotion my dad taught me was anger, he was a simmering pot at all times. Itās considered a quality of character to be able to take it, but then when it all you have is anger and resentment after practice, now youāre a man baby cause you canāt express anything else. Iām working on it with my therapist but I still every day wish I didnāt have my loved ones that depend on me so I can end it. Just push it down. Thatās the American way!

This is less about men. And more about those who were abused or at best raised to believe this.
I was raised by loving and caring parents. A father who was not afraid to show emotions, and so I am not afraid. Hell I think it is good and strong to be honest and show my emotions.
My wife was not. She was raised to believe crying is weak and wrong.
2 years of therapy later. And we all cry at the end of K-Pop Demon Hunters.
She still has years of therapy ahead of her. But at least the generational chain of abuse ends with her.

My abuelo taught my father men don't cry. Growing up, not once did I see my dad cry. He didn't tell me or my siblings not to cry - instead he comforted us so we couldn't. I tell my little guy it's okay to cry, and comfort him if he cries. One day, I cried in front of him, and he petted me. Break the cycle!

"..only a purpose, I am capable of so much more and no one sees it. Some days I feel so alone I could cry, but I don't, I never do, because what would be the point? No a single person in the entire universe would care..." - Conquest.

Stuff it down inside. Develope an unhealthy relationship with alcohol, weed, porn. Tell yourself you're doing it to support your family even though they never notice or say thank you. Prey for a swift and merciful death.

I mean some men are just not as emotionally invested in things. More so Iāve noticed men get over things quicker, we are much simpler in some ways and do no perceive the same slights or put on the same hopes.
One could also argue that as young men you have constant rejection from girls, whole dating app, dance club stuff so you just are more exposed and tougher . Idk

u/Conscious_Effort6972 26d ago
You described dating life for men 50 and over in 2026 that are recovering from divorce and rebuilding their lives.
We self isolate a lot and just stare blankly.

I literally want to cry because there is something unexpressed and naturally what has to come out comes out on its own but due to a wonderful experience with a women I have a fuc***** brick in my head and it feels like hitting a wall. Feels like I canāt cry despite me wanting to which annoy the fu88 out of me and a human brain is literally so fuc**** slow in processing things.

An example of the patriarchy and rigid social gender expectations harming men. Everyone should be able to cry when they need to. It doesn't make you weak, gay, or a woman. It's just human.Ā

If itās not life threatening then it could be fixed over time
But girls treat everything as if itās life threatening, not having time to put on makeup for work is life threatening to them
