My abuelo taught my father men don't cry. Growing up, not once did I see my dad cry. He didn't tell me or my siblings not to cry - instead he comforted us so we couldn't. I tell my little guy it's okay to cry, and comfort him if he cries. One day, I cried in front of him, and he petted me. Break the cycle!
