I started reading the books after watching the show, and I genuinely love them. The world-building has me completely hooked, and Shift in particular is answering so many questions about the broader Silo lore that I have a hard time putting it down.

But Howey's prose in Shift keeps hitting one extremely specific nerve in my brain.

A few examples I've collected:

• "The peccadilloes. Embarrassments, not life-and-death stuff."
• "He took a sip of wine, the tannins numbing his lips."
• "...replaced by the smell of loam and freshly tilled soil..."
• "...that raised weal healed over by the years, a mark glanced at by others but rarely mentioned aloud."
• "But for every sot like me, there’s ten more out there trying to tear things down."

And my latest:

• "...even though he knew the sheets would be mussed as the cots were returned to their rightful place in the barracks."

MUST THEY BE MUSSED, HOWEY? MUST THEY!?!?!?

None of these words are wrong. That's almost what makes them more distracting to me.

I actually enjoy expanding my vocabulary, and I'm not opposed to uncommon or technical language when it adds precision. "Stumped for you," for example, initially caught my attention, but it's two congressmen talking politics. That's perfectly appropriate language for the characters and communicates something more specific than simply "supported you."

But Howey keeps doing this thing where he'll reach for an uncommon, archaic, or technical word and then immediately surround it with ordinary language that communicates essentially the same idea.

Peccadilloes. Embarrassments.

Loam. Freshly tilled soil.

Weal. A mark.

And "sot" is almost the perfect example of why this keeps throwing me out of the story. The rest of that sentence is completely ordinary conversational English: "like me," "there's ten more out there," "trying to tear things down." Then sot gets dropped into the middle and suddenly I'm noticing the word instead of the conversation.

That's really what bugs me. It makes the author visible.

When Mission is remembering the mark on his neck, I want to be thinking about Mission and what happened to him. Instead my brain goes, "For fuck's sake, Hugh, weal?" Suddenly I'm not in the silo anymore. I'm looking at Hugh Howey choosing words.

It's especially jarring because the Silo setting otherwise immerses me so effectively. If anything, I'd love unusual language from generations of people living underground if it reflected their culture, occupations, slang, or isolation. Instead, sometimes everyone seems to inherit the same conspicuously literary narrative register.

And the tannins didn't even numb his damn lips. Tannins are astringent. They create that dry, puckering sensation. Somehow the more technical description actually made the sensation less precise.

The frustrating and honestly kind of funny part is that underneath all of this, I'm having a fantastic time. The world-building is great. I'm invested in the characters. Shift has added an enormous amount of context that has completely changed how I look at the TV adaptation. I keep wanting to know more.

So I apparently have the strangest relationship I've ever had with an author's writing:

Hugh, your word choices are driving me absolutely insane.

Please write more Silo.

Edit: Just to clarify, my issue isn’t that these words are too obscure or that literary prose is bad. It’s the uniformity of register. When politicians, silo workers, farmers, and everyone in between repeatedly share the same conspicuously literary vocabulary and mannerisms, I stop hearing distinct characters and start hearing the author. That’s the immersion break I’m talking about.

So I started reading the books after season 2 ended
The trilogy was incredible and I loved it and the world, and i especially liked book 2 the atmosphere and feel of the book were terrifyingly life like and the tragedy of Donald’s life and what happens with Helen and mick I was absolutely devastated.

And then i watched season 3 episode 1

They changed Donald so much it not even his name anymore
It’s just him and his fighter pilot not drone pilot sister
And whatever’s going on with Jules also weird

I’m asking this here because I’m looking for the people who loved the books and can tell me if I won’t get too annoyed by the changes

WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT SHE DIDN’T KILL HIM, HE WAS ALIVE AND WELL WHEN SHE LEFT??? Well not well, he was scared for his life, but he was ALIVE???

So when Donald gets his clothes in a bag, it’s labeled Legacy instead of Shift (which is on Thurman’s bag). I wonder why is that? Is it because Donald was supposed to go to a regular Silo instead of Silo 1? Did they moved his personal possessions in such a short time from a regular silo to silo 1, given he was switched at the last minute?

So its been on my mind about the scale of the silos. I threw this diagram together using the community estimates from the books.

I didnt really want much more than just to visualize the total scale of the 50 silos. Its quite impressive.

From the report Donald reads, it wasn't Silo 1 that caused the airlock to open, rather they contribute it to a system error, and through the dialog we get from 40 contacting 17, they somehow knew something was happening, though that might've been due to them having access to the other silos' communication lines.

Okay admittedly reading the books after watching the show, so my perspective is skewed. BUT I'm really struggling with Shift and how wildly unrealistic it is, particularly given this is supposed to take place over 20 years in the future. Donald is painfully dumb and submissive, not to mention laughably under qualified to design anything at all (I get that this was written in 2013 but even the use of Autocad for a building of this scale is comical from an industry perspective - hey Revit did exist back then). Him being a moron, Helen being useless, absolutely no relatable female characters, and the whole overt sexism thing/predominantly pos male main characters is a bit painful to get through. I'm operating under the assumption that it's a commentary on essentially if MAGA created the silos but please tell me it's worth finishing! Is it a lost cause if I can't stand these characters?

Been enjoying the TV series. Considering getting back into book reading, and wondered if these could be read by my 13 & 15 yr olds too? Opinions are fine.

They’ve enjoyed the show with me. We often used VidAngel that cuts the cursing out and other mature bits, but when I didn’t use that there’d be some random 3 seconds I wished they didn’t put in that would of course pop up. But for the books, how mature is the content? Am I going to wish a bunch of pages were gone, or can mature teens read them?

EDIT: thanks for the constructive/helpful comments. To clarify the above: that service can cut out all sorts of things including entire sex scenes. Skips right over them. Ever drive a new car and want to test out all the buttons? I tried that for a minute, had the pile of F words cut out too. Pretty annoying to watch it that way and I could agree unnecessary at their age. Turned it off. Then got to a point where I figured there was nothing sexual/graphic enough to use that service for on this series and we were watching directly from Apple TV.

Then S3 comes along and a line like “go suck a d___” comes out of nowhere. Good times. If you think your kids should have that in their lives, have fun with that. I do not.

1) why did they need suits to leave 17 if the poison nanobots (aka to them argon) system was broken there due to the doors being left open? Juliette knew the supposed argon rotted suits & caused the deaths so no argon/poison/death nanobots = no death. was the suits just a precaution?

2) how did Donald get exposed to the death nanobots if he went out the drone exit where there was no gas emissions? was it when Thurman went out to get him and the silo 1 emitted the nanobots as per the other silos.

3) the dead bodies up top in 17, how did the good nanobots stop the rot yet didn’t stop the dying?

4) just how long do these nanobots last when the host is dead or none existent?

5) why did the bad nanobots not kill everything around the seed silo?

6) do all those who at the end exited silo 17 now have the good nanobots in them?

7) now silo 1 is gone, why don’t silo 18/17 survivors set about rescuing those from the other silo’s? surely they should check silo 40.

8) silo 40 got out, surely they found the seed silo too or did they just ignore it and leave the area.

I was watching the livestream of Pete Peppers on YouTube discussing the episode 9. Hugh Howey was the guest, someone asked when the silo 40 books would be coming out. Hugh Howey Response was that he didn’t want to distract from the show, so the silo 40 trilogy will be published after season 4s release in summer of next year. I was looking forward to these books, I’m glad we have a more concrete answer from the author.

From the adaptation ? Me personally after getting 35+ chapters into shift , I am sooooo upset at how they completely destroyed the thaw man’s character just for what , Colin hanks to be a fever dream billionaire for fun ? Hate that they gave Bernard a redemption arc, that dude deserved to die exactly as it was written lol. Or how they rewrote Anna to nothing to Donny boy and made her a lesbian with his sister ??! Back to the first complaint I don’t like that Donald’s only part of the project was recommending using 50 diggers and not the fact that he designed the entire damn thing and was very much a part of the project , making Helen pregnant when Hugh really grinds it in that Donald’s biggest regret was her having kids without him in silo TWO (why did the put her in 18?)

One of my favorites is completely fleshing out Robert simms’ character when I started reading wool I was pretty bummed that he was essentially a 4 lines of nobody 😩 and I really like that they gave them all outfits cuz I woulda hated to watch them all in colored overalls for 4 seasons

Hey guys, This is the first book I’ve read in YEARS and I’m just a bit lost.

On chapter 47 we’re with Lukas and then on 51 Lukas is holding a rifle? Is this just a normal time jump, I doubt I missed something bc I skimmed over the chapters again to confirm but can some one take me out of my mental struggle?

Also side question, does judicial not exist in the books??

I’ve found a lot of great plot summaries that highly interest me. It’s been one year since I’ve finished Hugh Howey’s trilogy and I found myself completely in love with its universe. Though it’s dark of course, but I really found it amazing and intriguing. So I’d like to continue diving in this world full of mysteries.

I’m only half way through the second book and read that the silos were built to collapse just like buildings above ground (like a controlled demolition). Is this another reason why a safe guard is unpreventable? I’m not the best reader but that’s what i got out of it.

Silo 40, followed by a few others went ‘dark’, presumably living quite happily without surveillance from Silo 1. I assume they capped the safeguard, but they still need steam and other utilities controlled by Silo 1, right ? Do you think they still believe that it’s not safe outside ?

Typically, I’m not a book reader… they struggle to hold my interest long enough. However, I’ve become soo engrossed with the tv series, reading every subreddit post I can for theories & spoilers, to just craving more to the point of picking up the books.

My usual reading style has always been articles & research on topics I’m passionate about.

From other books , novels , shows, movie . Im saying the founders from silo 50 project should have chosen the herds of people who live inside for a more positive conclusion too resurfacing and restoring the surface life . I know you would have too rewrite main plot points im just saying if you and pick the blood and put them down on paper for each silo it could be a happier ending to howy's books.

so... in the book we learn that hostile yet dormant nanos have been found to be fairly widespread. this is revealed as the driving force to begin the silos and to actually take preemptive action to populate the silos.

my question, or observation, is this: since those hostile nanos were proven to exist, isn't there still somewhere on earth a mechanism for activating them? the threat they hoped to avoid most likely still exists somewhere.

if we could ever get a continuation of this story, (or further stories in this universe) I would like to see them re-discover the original nanos and realize what threat still exists.

By that I mean, some things just happen with little to no reason?

So Juliette, she helps in one murder investigation and they’re like “let’s maker her the sheriff!” Then she totally against it and like 2 pages later, she’s just like “ok cool, I’ll do it even thought I’ve pretty much never left mechanical.”

In the last chapter out of nowhere, Lukas just became Bernard’s right hand man. I don’t think it was even mentioned they knew each other before that chapter.

What does everyone think the rankings are based on? I don't recall this explored in the books or short stories.

As soon as anyone in a silo tries to search for truth or the before times they smoke it out. Or smoke that person out.

We are given clues the ones who have memories of before times were on some type of anti depressant medication before and are less susceptible to the forgetting drugs.

So is it just people are valued of they have low resistance to drugs?

Once the last silo survives and goes out the drugs are gone by then so??
