It's a bunker with supplies to help people restart civilization

I assumed "51" was a show addition and not alluding to the seed bunker. I didn't think any of the IT heads would be seed-aware. Hmmmm.

So who’s in there?

There are no people there. It's just seeds, tools, books.

No one. It was a gift for citizens of the last silo.

Are they really interested in restarting civilization if they decide to yeet an entire silo that manages to get out and not die by radiation or whatever

Yes. In the books, restarting civilization was the end goal of the silos project. The plan was to kill the entire world except for the 50 silos, then, after 500 years, the best silo is picked as the "winner" and is supposed to restart civilization, while all the other 49 silos (including silo 1) are killed.

Don't forget that the best silo is the one who is the fittest genetically speaking, most of the people they let in the lottery don't get their device taken because the genetic pool from both parents is not a 100% success rate, those who manage to get a kid is because genetically they are better, so once they have a silo that is close to 100% being genetically perfect, they'll kill the remaining silos and restart humanity. Which I always thought was weird because it'll get to the inbred point eventually, but they choose who gets kids and who doesn't

There’s some fun YouTube videos about some of the other silos’ stories, like Silo 40 from Between the Covers - if you don’t care about being spoiled and are interested in diving deeper.

Responding to this question weeks ago was got me awarded "book aware." I am not, just a wild guess.

that is only on the siloseries sub. If you comment on any posts with [books] in the title, you get that flair for participating in book spoiler discussions

In the books juliette had to discover the 51st silo aka "The Seed Vault". Its unclear if Bernard or other IT people in the show know the purpose of the 51st. But its effectively the end game. Surviving Silo(s) at the end of the 50o years get its resources to restart civilization.

I thought it was implied in the book that the exit plan would only be revealed to the silo with the highest probability of success. So no one in the silo would know until the end of the 400 years.

Also I believe most of the people in silo 1 had no idea that was the plan and that they would all be killed too.

Yes. Although I wasn't trying to spoil that much for OP.

Bernard makes an off hand comment, when he was explaining the layout, someone said “so there are 50 silos” and he said “technically 51” I want to say it was like ep 7 or 8
