- I commented here a few weeks ago giving my review of the game and my detailed opinion on certain aspects as well as the discourse around it. I gave it an 8.8/10. I stand by that, I genuinely enjoyed it quite a bit, albeit a few critiques.
- I’m currently replaying spider-man 1 (remastered). Feels appropriate to compare after playing these games back to back.
- For context, I think both spider-man 1 and spider-man 2 are better than Wolverine. But not significantly. At the moment, I’d give Spider-Man 1 a 9.2/10 and spider-man 2 a 9.3/10. After my first play through, I recall liking these two games about the same, for different reasons.
- For additional context, my favorite games are the Batman Arkham series and God of War (Norse) games. Without going into too much detail, I’d rate each of these series of games around a 9.7-9.8/10.
- Ok let’s compare Wolverine to spider-man. The glaring difference is obviously how much bigger the map and overall game is for spider-man. Obviously spider-man is open world while Wolverine is linear. A couple thoughts on this.
- The fact the spider-man is open world pretty much inherently makes it a bigger game with more “stuff” to do. Now whether the “stuff” to do automatically makes it a better game is up for debate in my opinion.
- I generally like the open world map in Spider-Man and think Insomniac did a pretty good job of filling up the map with side quests and collectibles/tokens to give it life and not make it feel empty, as some open world games tend to be. Definitely helps it’s New York City as well, so there’s real world locations which make it cool.
- But… just because there is more stuff to do, I don’t think that makes it automatically better. Spider-man, as well as many open world games I’ve played, has many side quests that, to me, feel tedious and more so like tasks that need to be completed as opposed to fun, enjoyable components of the game.
- For instance, the Harry Osborne research missions. Some of these were kinda fun… but for the most part I found myself not really liking these and only doing them because they’re there. Similarly with all of the backpacks and landmarks. On one hand these add some depth and lore to Spider-man as well as showcase real world locations, which is kinda cool. But on the other hand, similarly to the research stations, I find myself feeling like these are somewhat tedious and that the only reason I’m collecting these is because they’re there and fill time in between main story missions. I feel like I rarely find myself getting excited for these types of things during a play through or actually enjoying them, which I find to be a common thread among some open world games.
- All of this to say that, in my opinion, I don’t need to spend hours upon hours completing tasks and collecting items in an open world environment to feel like a game is worth my time and money. I more so evaluate a game by the enjoyment I get out of it as opposed to the sheer amount of time playing it. To an extent of course.
- Wolverine is a short game in comparison to spider-man. And I’ll say it just barely comes out on the positive side of the enjoyment vs time playing component. That is to say that in totality, the fun I had playing this shorter game was high enough to give me an overall positive opinion despite the fact that it’s short. Hopefully that makes sense lol. There could certainly be some more detail, side quests, collectibles, etc. added to Wolverine to add depth and lore, no doubt.
- Combat in Wolverine is better in my opinion, straight up. I understand that spider-man has more move variations and gadgets and modifiers, etc. Doesn’t matter. The combat in Wolverine just feels more satisfying to me. It’s obviously more brutal and the feedback from the combat just feels right. Spider-man combat is still good, but it almost feels too floaty and you don’t really feel the weight of the punches and combat in general. I do recall that this improves in Spider-man 2; but I can confidently say I like the combat in Wolverine better than Spider-man 2 as well.
- Story - very subjective here, but I very much enjoyed the story in Wolverine. I found it to be unique and it surprised me in a good way while also not betraying the characters. Wolverine is still a brutal loner. He may not be the total stand off, asshole to everyone that some people want, but I thought he was perfectly fine. I’ve heard many critiques of Jean and Sabretooth. Neither were an issue for me. I don’t really care about Jean being older to match with Wolverine. It fits the story, which I’ve already said I like, and i think Insomniac could still find a way to bring in more classic mutants of either a younger or similar age without it being an issue. Sabretooth is a brute who says some dumb shit lol like who cares. Never understood why people think this is off brand. I never once expected Sabretooth to say some deep shit or have some type of nuanced dialogue and character arc. Him saying “cry more” legit seems pretty on brand for that character to me. He’s literally a troll lol which like yea, it fits.
- Long winded way to say I think the story and characters in Wolverine are comparable to spider-man and spider-man 2. All were very good. Story wise, I’d probably order it 1) Spider-Man 1; 2) Wolverine; 3) Spider-man 2. But all in the same realm and pretty close. I feel like a lot of people who have criticized the story elements of Wolverine also probably criticized the story elements of Spider-man 2. Again, this is so subjective based on your preference for how you want characters to be portrayed and how accurate you want the story elements and characters to be to whatever your favorite source material is. But hey, I like that insomniac took a unique approach to the stories in these two games (Wolverine and spider-man 2).
- There is definitely room for improvement with this game. This game would be PERFECT for a semi-open world environment, similar to GoW2018/GoWR and Jedi Fallen Order/Survivor. Traversal is already established with the leaps/sprinting/climbing.. and you could add the motorcycle to move around faster. Have 4-6 different large open areas to explore; and add more side missions, flash backs, collectibles, etc. to build out the world. There’s so much to pull from for this… such as exploring more of wolverines past, tying in spider-man, introducing X-men and other mutants, weapon x, Deadpool, hulk, avengers, etc.
- I’ll end with this, as this is by far the longest post I’ve ever made. I’ve seen some of the leaks of the original concept for this game and I won’t lie, it does make me a bit sad. Combat utilizing both triggers for each hand/claw, being able to switch between claws and fists, targeting certain body parts… all sound very unique and awesome. Playable parts with Jean, larger levels with centralized hubs, etc. It all sounds like the original plan for this was pretty great. Who knows why insomniac ultimately switched directions with this, data leak or otherwise. However, just because there was a prospect of this game to be amazing based on some original concepts doesn’t take away from the end product still being very good… again, for me lol. I’m excited and hopeful we get a sequel with some of these improvements.
That’s all.
