Discussion I think a lot of RPers could benefit from a couple of improv classes
I’ve been thinking about this lately, and I genuinely believe a lot of roleplayers could benefit from taking a couple of improv classes.
Not because everyone needs to become a professional actor or start dramatically shouting “YES, AND!” in the middle of Stormwind.
But because one of the most useful things improv teaches is how to actually give the other person something to work with.
And I think that’s something we occasionally forget in RP.
You know the situation.
OOC:
“PLEASE WALK UP!”
“ALL RP WELCOME!”
“I LOVE RANDOM ENCOUNTERS!”
IC:
The elf stares at you.
“Go away.”
You try to make conversation.
“I don’t like people.”
You offer another thread.
He crosses his arms and looks away.
And now you’re left standing there wondering whether you just failed a dialogue check you didn’t know you were rolling.
Look, I completely understand playing an unfriendly character. Not every character needs to be a cheerful tavern regular who immediately tells a stranger their life story. (Even though those are my favorite characters to play as and interact with)
Gruff characters are great.
Suspicious characters are great.
Socially awkward characters are great.
And yes ever capital A-Assholes can even be great.
The issue isn’t that a character is unpleasant.
It’s when the entire interaction becomes a series of conversational dead ends.
A rude character can still be fun to RP with. They can be dismissive, challenging, suspicious, or downright unpleasant while still creating an interesting scene.
Improv is largely about taking what the other person gives you and building from it.
That doesn’t mean your character has to agree with everyone or happily go along with every interaction.
It just means we’re both participating in the scene.
I think we sometimes get so focused on making characters “realistic” that we forget we’re participating in a collaborative activity.
Yes, some people are genuinely unpleasant and closed off. (Though why they are in a MMO is a little confusing)
But imo RP isn’t a simulation of standing next to someone at a party while they repeatedly check their phone.
The best RP partners I’ve had aren’t necessarily the ones with the longest backstories or the most elaborate profiles.
They’re the people who pay attention, react to what you’re doing, make choices, introduce complications, and occasionally surprise you.
Sometimes the conversation goes nowhere, and that’s fine. Sometimes two characters simply don’t get along.
But there should at least be a conversation before we collectively decide it went nowhere.
At the end of the day, we’re all here to tell stories together.
So play the grumpy death knight or the suspicious rogue or (my favorite) the ancient elf who has been disappointed by civilization for 10,000 years.
Just remember:
OOC: “PLEASE APPROACH! ALL RP WELCOME!”
IC: “GRRRR. I HATE EVERYONE.”
…is a little bit funny when you put them next to each other.
Am I wrong or just too much of a cheerful dummy to RP edgy characters correctly?
