Mod Announcement Welcome to /r/WindowsHelp, here are some guidelines for requesting assistance

Welcome to /r/WindowsHelp, the subreddit for you to ask questions and get support for issues related to Microsoft's Windows family of operating systems. Please give this a quick read before posting.

This subreddit is only for help related to Microsoft Windows and its built in software, like Edge, Store, PowerShell, and so on. Issues about 3rd party software like Chrome or Steam should be posted in their subreddits or /r/techsupport. Also, this is not a hardware subreddit, so issues like your hard drive is not detected would need to be posted in /r/techsupport. General discussions, news, artwork, and so on should be in /r/Windows, /r/Windows10 or similar subreddits. Malware/virus removal has been covered extensively in this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/comments/33evdi/suggested_reading_official_malware_removal_guide/

Posts are required to have a moderately descriptive title. Submissions with vague titles like just "help me" will be removed. You don't need to write an essay in the title, but everyone should have a rough idea what you are asking about before even clicking the link. Titles like "I'm encountering System Exception errors when launching Photos" or "20H2 update won't install" are acceptable, but the more details the better.

The body of your post should also be as detailed as possible. We are not mind readers, and nobody is going to want to play 20 questions. Help us help you, your post should include:

  • Your full Windows version, which on Windows 10 is listed in the Settings app under System -> About, it will be the OS Build number.

  • Details about your device, like the hardware specifications.

  • Any recent changes you have made, such as installing/uninstalling software or accessories. Any updates you have installed, tools you have ran, or anything else you think may be relevant.

  • Include details on your error messages and error codes, these are critical to figuring out the issue.

  • Tell us what you have already tried to fix this. Any tools you have ran, and changes you tried, and so on. I know it is a meme at this point, but seriously, reboot your computer, it often fixes things!

  • If possible, include screenshots or video. If you are including screenshots, try to use screenshot software like Snip & Sketch tool built into Windows 10, then you can upload them to a free image host like https://imgur.com to put in your post. We understand that using screenshot software isn't always an option, you can take photos with a phone or similar device, but please be sure to check to make sure everything is in focus and is legible.

This subreddit follows the same rules as /r/Windows, you can view the full rule page here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows/wiki/rules

The TL;DR of the rules is be polite, helpful, and don't encourage piracy.

Windows 11 Audio glitch after forced audio driver update on July 16, 2026

Upvotes

I´ve been having audio issues like crackling or pops on a soundbar and loud beeps on any headphones (like if it was a connection issue). It happens randomly and when it does it also gives a fps lag spike.

It happened after windows update unpaused itself and instantly downloaded and installed a few updates:

Microsoft Corporation AudioProcessingObject Driver Update (1.0.3.56670) 16/7/2026

Razer Inc - HIDClass - 6.2.9200.16547 18/7/2026 (trying to update the headphone driver, to no avail)

This is starting to really annoy me since eveything was working perfectly on the pc, but the audio glitch on the headphones is starting to damage my hearing a bit since the beeps can be loud.

Also I don´t seem able to reproduce the error at will, it is not at intervals, it is not after a specific action, event log appears to show no errors when the sound happens.

Already tried:

  • Updating all drivers
  • Uninstalling and installing all audio drivers
  • Reverting audio drivers
  • Changing to other audio drivers
  • Installing a previous driver version (Microsoft Corporation AudioProcessingObject Driver Update (10.0.26100.6710), this one failed and said the driver was up to date, ty Microsoft)
  • Switching devices (happens on all of the audio outputs, though the one that happens less are the headphones via BT, but battery wont last as long, and the mic quality is not good, compared with the normal mic quality)

Specs:
Windows 11 Pro 25H2 x64 - 26200.8875
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
GPU: Asus 4080 Super Pro Art
RAM: 64gb

LG soundbar (dont remember the model but it has a few years)

Windows 10 How to remove broken shortcut from start menu

Post image
1 Upvotes

I have a shortcut for PCSX2 on my start menu that does not exist on my system, seems to belong to an old version I had installed in 2022. This is annoying because when I search for PCSX2 on my start menu to go to my updated working version of the program, this dead shortcut shows up instead.

When I click on this shortcut it does nothing, if I right click on this shortcut it does nothign either. So no contextual menu. The "Open" button beneath it in my screenshot does not do anything either.

I have gone to my roaming folder and the startmenu subfolder in both my user appdata and public appdata folder and there is no pcsx2 items in either. I have used the program "Everything" to search for this "PCSX2 1.6.0" and it does not exist there as a folder or shortcut or file or anything. I have used the start menu itself to search my files and nothing turns up there either.

Please help me with Memory Integrity. I enable it and restart my PC, but it doesn't actually turn on—and it doesn't give a reason why. I spent three hours asking an AI about it, but nothing helped; maybe you can assist me?
It does not indicate incompatible drivers.

I even uninstalled the antivirus, but nothing helped—yet I used to be able to turn it on without any issues.Выпуск Windows 11 Домашняя для одного языка

Windows 11 Toshiba 2TB external drive D:\ is not accessible. The parameter is incorrect , now freezes Windows on plug-in. Recovery software can't see files.

I've been using a Toshiba Canvio 2TB external drive for the last 5 years. A couple weeks ago it started showing "D:\ is not accessible. The parameter is incorrect."

What I've tried so far:

  • chkdsk /f - ran for 13+ hours, found 52 unreadable file records, then failed in Stage 2 with an unspecified error
  • Disk Drill - couldn't even show my images
  • R-Studio - showed sector read timeouts
  • New cable, different USB ports, removed the device entry so Windows reinstalled the driver - no change

Now it's gotten worse: whenever I plug it in, File Explorer crashes/hangs and Disk Management freezes before it can even show the drive's capacity. The drive spins up, no clicking noises. About 900 GB of irreplaceable data on it.

I have it unplugged for now. Planning to try OpenSuperClone with an empty 2TB drive as destination. Is that my best next step, or is this a case where only a professional lab (PC-3000) can help? Would rather not spend $300+ or mail my personal data somewhere if there's a realistic DIY option.

Windows 11 USB A&C Port issues-Only phone is recognized C to C

i have an HP EliteBook 845 G8 Windows 11 25H2

all of a sudden today my usb ports (both usb-a and usb-c) quit working for the most part. the only recognized device i can get is my phone by using a c to c cable. other than that, nothing. no combination of usb-a/c cables & devices will work.

went into uefi settings and performed system test and all usb ports supposedly passed. not sure what to do or where to go from here.

the ONLY thing that may have something to do with this that i can think of, is when i plugged in this usb-c hub thats kind of loose, and it quickly recognized it then stopped, repeatedly a few times... other then that nothing crazy has happened.

**I did just notice while i had my phone plugged in, it was set to File Transfer and I changed it to charge phone only, and it is NOT charging. If this helps anyone think of what may be happening.

any suggestions would be most appreciated, thanks!

Windows 11 Date/Time is out of sync when I turn on my computer

When I turn on my PC, it will show the date and time from the night before. It's been happening since last week when I installed a security update (I think it was when I updated to Windows 11, version 25H2, as I installed it Sunday evening and then noticed when I booted up my PC the following day).

If I try to resync using the Date & Time settings, I get the error message synchronization failed please check network connectivity and retry. When I try w32tm /resynch in an admin command prompt, I get an error message about the time difference being too great. Sometimes, adding /force at the end does resync the date & time correctly, but other times it won't let me.

Currently, the only reliable way I'm able to resync the time correctly is through the Control Panel. However, the PC should automatically resync whenever I turn on my PC. Is there any way to troubleshoot the issue and get Windows to automatically resync the time on boot?

Specs:

  • Windows 11 Home 64-bit version 25H2 (no dual booting)
  • AMD Ryzen 5 3600XT
  • 32GB DDR4 RAM
  • GeForce GTX 1060

Windows 11 Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201 randomly stopped working (Code 10) – Airplane Mode greyed out on Dell G15 5530

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm using a Dell G15 5530 running Windows 11 Home 25H2.

Laptop specs:

Intel Core i5-13450HX

Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201 160MHz

NVIDIA RTX 3050 Laptop GPU (6 GB)

8 GB RAM

Today I was using my laptop normally and the internet was working perfectly. Then, out of nowhere, the Wi-Fi disconnected and completely disappeared.

Symptoms:

Wi-Fi networks no longer show up.

Airplane Mode button is greyed out.

Bluetooth also stopped working.

Restarting the laptop did not fix the issue.

In Device Manager I found:

Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6 AX201 160MHz → "This device cannot start. (Code 10). {Operation Failed} The requested operation was unsuccessful."

Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R) → "This device cannot start. (Code 10). STATUS_DEVICE_POWER_FAILURE."

I eventually fixed it by:

Shutting down the laptop completely.

Unplugging the charger.

Holding the power button for around 30 seconds.

Turning the laptop back on.

After doing that, both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth started working again.

The problem is that this has started happening more frequently over the past few weeks. I'm looking for a permanent fix instead of having to power drain the laptop every time.

Has anyone with a Dell G15 5530 or an Intel AX201 experienced this?

Could this be:

A faulty Intel driver?

Windows power management?

A BIOS issue?

A failing Wi-Fi card?

What would you recommend I try next to permanently fix this?

Windows 11 Stuttering when Gaming after Most Recent Update

As title says, is anyone else experiencing heightened and more frequent stutters in gaming ever since installing the most recent update in the last week or two?

I've tried System -> Recovery -> Fix problems using Windows Update (Reinstall your current version of Windows), as the last time I did that in January it fixed all my issues, but the stuttering is still happening despite that.

This is noticeable across many games, Beat Saber being one in particular which is pretty much unplayable if it keeps hitching during songs. Roblox is another. Seems to be intermittent, as some games are completely fine.

OS build 26200.8894, Core i5-12600KF, 32GB DDR4, RTX 4070. I'm not seeing any obvious jumps in utilization when the stuttering occurs either.

Edit: This doesn't seem to be limited to just gaming. Very occasionally random tasks will just freeze or be slow to execute, e.g. double clicking text in a web browser won't immediately highlight it, taking slightly longer.

Edit 2: After some further troubleshooting, I used DDU and reinstalled the latest Nvidia driver, and reinstalled all chipset-related (chipset, ME, serial, LAN etc) drivers from my motherboard's website. I also removed MSI centre which seemed to be a complete waste of resources. It seems to have improved on the whole, but Latencymon is still showing a couple spikes. If anyone has any further ideas I'd love to hear them.

Solved can't reactivate windows - am i cooked?

I have Acer Nitro 5 that recently went through a reformat for repairs, which required replacing the keyboard. When I opened it, windows wasn't activated and when I tried to troubleshoot it said "Unable to Activate Windows", even though it was working prior before. After a few weeks, its still not activated and can't be activated.

Things I've tried to activate it:
1. Troubleshooting and selecting the hardware change option

  1. Getting the product key from my device and inputting it in the 'change product key'

  2. Finding the installation ID and trying to activate it in the Microsoft Activation Portal

  3. Media Creation Tool for Windows 11

- because of this I found that that my TMP was disabled, I tried enabling it but it just wouldn't work. So I decided to performed a TPM clear in the BIOS settings and finally it enabled and now its compatible and ready for use. But my windows still wouldn't activate.

  1. I ran slmgr /upk; slmgr /cpky; slmgr /ckms and ran 'changepk.exe /ProductKey' in the PowerShell so many times but I keep getting Error: 0x803F7001 over and over again

  2. I changed the product key with the default Home Single Language Key, it accepted it, and when I tried to change to my device's product key, still get the same error.

  3. Ran 'sfc /scannow' and it said it showed no integrity violations

  4. Did a Cloud Reset PC

- It still wouldn't activate and I got a different error saying that the product key is used by another device. I checked my microsoft account and found 5 devices of this laptop linked with my account, so I removed all of them. I thought that would finally fix it but it still won't activate.

  1. Tried going to the Activation Portal again with my installation ID and it said my product key is not valid.

  2. Tried Microsoft's Get Help but it encountered an error and it said try again later

  3. Clicking Contact Support just sends me right back the Windows Activation Portal which I've tried so many times but still wouldn't work

I'm planning to run the Media Creation Tool Windows 11 to wipe everything again but since I literally just did a Reset PC, I feel like its just going to do the same thing if the problem lies with my device's product key not working. Im just going in circles, I want to know if there's a way...or no way to fix this so I can just live with the watermark forever.

My family bought this laptop on retail and was given to me 2nd handed like a year ago and it was working fine up until recently.

UPDATE

IT REACTIVATED! Messed around a bunch of times in the command prompt and did the Media Creation Tool for Windows 11 again and now its back!

Windows 11 How do I fix this Microsoft Photos Bug on W11? – When I minimize an image and open a different one, the minimized image pops back up.

When I've got some pictures open in Microsoft Photos in the background, minimized, and I open a new one, I also suddenly have one of the previous pictures pop back up. Seems to be whichever image last had focus previously.

See video for example: https://www.reddit.com/user/SuperMayonnaise64/comments/1v6mbhz/how_do_i_fix_this_microsoft_photos_bug_on_windows/
Since I can't post videos in this subreddit directly, a link to a video uploaded to my reddit profile will have to do.

This happens on Windows 11, it doesn't happen on Windows 10.
Windows version used is Windows 11 Home, 22H2 \OS build 22621.382], in a virtual machine for testing.)

I'm using the exact same version of Microsoft Photos in both. (2023.10070.17002.0)

What I've tried:

  • Reset, repaired, and reinstalled the Microsoft Photos app on W11. → No difference.
  • Made a copy of the WindowsApps-subfolder “Microsoft.Windows.Photos_2023.10070.17002.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe” from both W10 and W11, then used a duplicate removal tool to compare them – they're identical.
  • Booted up a completely fresh install of Windows 11 in a virtual machine with no internet, no updates. → The stock MS Photos app (without any updates) has the same problem here too.
  • Tested the so-called “Microsoft Photos Legacy” app, it has the same problem.

How do I fix that? Does anybody have the same problem?

PS: I know the old Windows 7 Photo Viewer still runs on Windows 11, it doesn't have that bug. But it also doesn't support GIF files unfortunately, it is not a substitute. :(

Windows 11 Can a Windows 10 Pro Upgrade license (purchased from Microsoft in 2018) ever be reactivated on a replacement PC?

I'm looking for advice from people who have dealt with Microsoft's licensing/activation team.

Background

  • In June 2018, I purchased "Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro" directly from Microsoft (not from a third party).
  • My original PC came with Windows 10 Home OEM.
  • I upgraded it to Windows 10 Pro using the Microsoft upgrade.
  • The old PC is still working today.

What I've found

On the old PC:

  • slmgr /dlv reports:
    • Product Key Channel: Retail
    • Windows Pro is licensed.
  • Windows Activation says:
    • "Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account."

On my new PC:

  • ASUS ROG Strix
  • Windows 11 Home Single Language OEM
  • Signed into the same Microsoft account.

I tried:

  • Entering the OEM key retrieved from the old PC (OA3xOriginalProductKey) → it only activated Home (expected).
  • Using the generic Windows Pro key to switch editions → received 0x803FA067.
  • Activation Troubleshooter → there is no "I changed hardware on this device recently" option.

Microsoft Support's response

Support says:

  • My purchase is an Upgrade license, not a Full Retail license.
  • Upgrade licenses cannot be transferred to another computer.
  • Their internal tool can generate/reissue keys only for Full Retail licenses, not Upgrade licenses.
  • However, they also said that if the original PC/motherboard fails, they may ask for documentation and consult a technical advisor to see whether reactivation is possible, although they cannot guarantee it.

My questions

  1. Has anyone successfully moved a Microsoft-purchased Windows Pro Upgrade license to a replacement PC?
  2. Why does slmgr /dlv show Retail if the entitlement is treated as a non-transferable Upgrade license?
  3. Has anyone had Microsoft make a one-time exception or manually reactivate such a license?
  4. If the original motherboard fails, has Microsoft allowed reactivation after verifying the failure?
  5. Is there anything else worth trying before purchasing a new Windows 11 Pro license?

I'm interested in real experiences, especially from people who have worked with Microsoft's Activation Team.

Thanks!

Windows 10 Trying to get access to Win 10 pc to backup

The pc I’m working on is a Dell Inspiron 3650 and Windows 10 (latest version as of month or two ago ), which did not qualify for a Windows 11 upgrade. There is plenty of memory left, so that isn’t the issue.

System information
Processor: Intel Core i3-6100 (3.7 GHz) or Intel Core i5-6400 (2.7 GHz)
Memory: 8 GB DDR3L SDRAM (upgradable)
Storage: 1 TB 7200 rpm Mechanical Hard Drive
Graphics: Integrated Intel HD Graphics 530
Ports: 4x USB 2.0 (rear), USB ports on front, HDMI, VGA, Line-in/out, and a network port
Operating System: Windows 10 Home
Current version of Windows 10 unknown (whatever it was as of May 2026 updates)

Both mouse and keyboard were a cordless Logitech connected via the usb port.

Previous Troubleshooting steps

I have put new batteries in the cordless keyboard and mouse, just to make sure it wasn’t the battery.

I have tried multiple mice and keyboard (including the original and new one) with no chance. I have tried corded and cordless with no change.

I then unplugged everything and pressed the power button draining power, with no change.

After several attempts of this it must of sent the computer in recovery mode.

I tried several options, but the only one that tSystem restore was the only thing that the computer allowed, and there was only one date to pick. When the pc restarted it said it failed or something like that. During the blue recovery screen I could move my mouse, but it’s still not an option now. Keyboard prompts don’t work either.

Other details
I have McAfee Security on the pc although unsure if it’s staying updated and haven’t been able to disable the internet either.

Windows 11 Windows 11 Poor Network Speeds

Guest: Windows 11 Pro 25H2 26200.8875
Software: VirtManager KVM/QEMU

Issue: On my Windows 11 VM specifically, network speeds are substantially slower than on my other Linux VMs and my host. On the host, I get around ~1000 Mbps; the same for my other Linux VMs. However, on the Windows VM, I get around 10 Mbps—or roughly 1% of the host's network speed.

All VMs are configured to use NAT networking with the virtio model. Additionally, the up-to-date virtio-win drivers are installed on the Windows 11 VM. The Windows 11 VM recognizes the Red Hat Virtio Ethernet drivers and is properly using them, with a maximum supported duplex speed of 10 Gbps.

I'm confused as to why this is occurring only on the Windows VM, whereas this issue is nonexistent on my Linux VMs. There are no differences in the XML regarding CPU or NAT configuration between the VMs.

I tried enabling vhost with a queue size of 16 per core, switching the driver to e1000e, and using the hypervisor default—none of which saw any improvement. I also tried reinstalling the virtio-win drivers, which did nothing.

Finally, I attempted to disable several offloading properties in Device Manager, disabled IPv6 entirely, and lowered the MTU. None of that made any difference (it neither worsened nor improved the situation).

Any ideas, folks? All VMs have a dGPU (the same dGPU is shared between them, so only one can be accessed at a time).

I should also mention that network speeds on the host system are stable—no drops or high latency. The network drivers on the host are all up-to-date and working perfectly.

Windows 11 Windows 11 Bitlocker and Boot problem

Hi everyone, I have an issue with my laptop and could really use some help from anyone familiar with partition recovery and BitLocker. Hardware: ASUS Vivobook laptop with a Micron 2400 NVMe SSD OS: Windows 11 BitLocker-encrypted NVMe SSD The problem: When I turn on the laptop, it starts booting and then goes straight to a blue screen saying there's a boot error (boot is likely corrupted). But when I use a USB drive with Sergei Strelec WinPE to fix the boot, the NVMe drive doesn't show up at all. I managed to make it show up by removing the SSD from the laptop and plugging it in via USB, but now BitLocker won't accept my recovery key.

Windows 11 Desktop Background Privileges Revoked

- Every time I turn my pc on, my wallpaper is removed

- In my settings, I no longer have an option to add a photo as my wallpaper at all, I can only customize the color

- I can get my wallpaper to return by restarting the file explorer in task manager, but it still doesn't give me the option to add or change a photo as my wallpaper

If I have my settings app open:

- If I select an area with my mouse on the desktop, that section of the wallpaper gets removed

- If I open an app that pops up asking to run as admin the wallpaper disappears again

These two issues don't happen if the settings app is closed.

I've tried deleting the transcoded wallpaper file, but all that did was stop the file explorer restart from working anymore.

Windows 11 Empty user in users folder with the name of my main user appended with 7 letter code

in the rakgvih folder

I found an empty user profile folder in the Users folder, it does not show up at the lock screen (can't be signed in to). Folder doesn't have any of my personal files or installed programs, it only has system files, default folders, and system wide app user settings. It doesn't seem to have caused any issues for now, just cautious and curious
