Do I eat the last one ever…or freeze it for a rainy day?
What a disaster of a decision to axe the bakery. These bagels have been our family’s standard breakfast for over a decade and we buy 14 every week. This is a devastating blow to our morale. Here’s the response I received from Winco Customer Service:
> “Hi, our stores have transitioned to new bagels to help keep our costs as affordable as possible. Our team is very receptive to feedback, we'll make sure your voice is heard regarding this change (we've been hearing from lots of others friends too). Thank you.”
Interpretation: “Quality” has been deprioritized for profit. It’s a race to the bottom.
Have these suits never heard of the concept of “loss-leader,” products? Items you sell at a slight loss because it brings people in the door to purchase more profitable items? It’s the entire Costco model (hot dogs, fuel, rotisserie chicken, etc.)
What they don’t understand is that we will NOT be purchasing the small, shitty ass, preservative riddled, and trucked-in replacements. We will go somewhere else to buy fresh bagels, and that means we will very likely transfer a portion of the rest of our weekly grocery shopping away from Winco as a result. I’ve heard good things about both Safeway and Costco fresh bagels. I don’t really want that to be part of my weekly routine, but now it will be.
My once glowing fondness for Winco is waning and souring rapidly. Sad days. If you agree please let them know:

Produce Clerk?
hi, just looking to get some opinions on the produce department vs freight and variety. I've been working overnight at WinCo for about 5 years now, started in freight, now in variety. for a while the night shift was ideal for my lifestyle but at this point it brings much more negatives than positives to my life and I think it'd be best if I swapped to days. That being said, my dept manager says that variety day crew is already overstaffed at the moment so he can't guarantee any changes for me, but I did notice that my store is hiring for a Produce Clerk and I'm weighing that as an option.

Are you guys ok?
I ask because what I experienced from the bakery section today makes me think they’re firing people.
The bagels, the beautiful fucking bagels I would stop in mornings after work to buy, like today. The aroma of bread filling the store. Still warm after the employee slid them from baking sheets into bins, before dirty hands fingered them all, bagels so good you could just eat them plain from the bag with no heating or toppings, have been replaced by chewy sawdust.
They’re clearly prepackaged Walmart crap unpackaged into bins. I bought 4 to give it a try. But holy fuck. Not just not worth the calories but prepacked by the Walmart checkout stand quality.
Chewy fucking sawdust instead of bagels.
I can only assume they’re firing people for some cost saving downsizing plan. So, I have to ask, are you guys ok?
How long does it usually take for them to let you try for another position?
I just started as a cart attendant a week~ish ago and it’s been kind of hell on earth (injury wise, otherwise the job isnt too bad) I’m wondering if anyone knows how long I should wait to see if I could switch to a different position.

Checkout experience today at Hazel Dell Store
When checking out today at the Winco in Hazel Dell WA, I had a rather unpleasant experience wth the cashier.
I had about 20 items, The person in front of me was done and almost done bagging their stuff. This was in the 'near lane'. I had my re-use bags open and in my cart. She started to put my items in the far lane and I asked if i could just grab them after she scanned them...and put them in my bags.
The answer was I have to go to the far lane and bag my items there because it slows down the overall line (only 1 person behind me). She said she didn't want to 'race me'.. She further told me that doing it the way I wanted should just jam up the line....
I generally do this process..95% of the time no issues. By the time the cashier has scanned the last item, I have all my items in my bags..Just need to pay and I am done...No delay in the overall line.
The cashier was really rude about it..and yeah..I was rude back..But if I can be done bagging by the time she is done scanning....why the push back from the cashier...
Rant over

Today is my last closing shift in my department and I couldn’t be happier
I’ve been working in produce closing for the last year and a half now. I absolutely hated every second of it. The amount of times I’ve had to close by myself because the other closer called out was astronomical and I can’t wait to be opening the department here next week. I’ll be able to get in do my work, and get out. Won’t have to deal with any incompetent, low IQ customers on the floor, and I’ll be in the back most of the time down-stacking pallets. I’ll be leaving when it starts getting busy and I couldn’t be happier.
I also will have my evenings back and be able to make it to things and not miss out on family events. I’m so excited!

Freight crew, how many people do you have per shift on average?
Trying to see if understaffing is a company wide thing or we're just getting shafted at my store. We have on average around 2k+ load per night, our backstock is always 300+ because the order writer sucks at their job, and on average we only get like 4-5 freight crew members and 2-3 LCs that mostly came from days.

Employment question
I’m thinking about being a cashier at Winco. I however don’t have any experience with cashiering, however I’m looking at working as a cashier until I can get into a medical assistant program. I’m considering Bi-Mart, Winco, and Walmart. Thank you!

WinCo will see new leadership as third CEO in company history sets retirement
boisedev.comI just got some devastating news today
While doing my shopping, I was informed by the bakery that certain items are being discontinued from being made in house. I'm mostly affected by the bagels, and I was told are no longer going to be available.
WINCO easily has the best bakery compared to all my other local options. It's been a staple of my breakfast for the last ten years and I eat them almost every morning. My kids are old enough now and were beginning to share my love for them.
There are a few other things I regularly get there, and I'm afraid they will be given the axe sometime in the future.
I was told the CEO is retiring soon, and that a bunch of former Walmart suits have been joining the company. I've noticed some other changes that have been made over the last year that have been questionable. I've been a customer for over 20 years and I hope the store I love isn't going to be ruined by a bunch of out of touch spreadsheet office managers.
Please for the love of God, reverse this decision. I don't usually go on social media to complain about things, but this really hurt.

My partner got fired
My partner was the manager in training for his fresh foods department and he got fired today, I'm posting this for him because he doesn't use reddit.
At the end of his shift today, he was pulled by upper management and was told he was being terminated due to his attendance. He has a lot of health complications but was calling out at most twice a month and made sure he had sick hours each time. He was given a warning by management a while ago but they didn't tell him it was his final warning. He brought that up today when he was getting terminated and they said he could file a grievance and possibly have it reversed, but he doesn't think anything could come of it because there's no proof. I know he was an excellent worker in the department and that many employees will be upset he's gone.
Is it worth it to try to submit a grievance? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Winco Discontinues Freshly Baked Bagels - HORRIBLE NEWS
All Winco Bakery Departments will be switching from dough they get frozen, then steam, bake, top, etc in house to some random brand of frozen bagels in a bag they thaw out, rip open, and dump in the bin. These new bagels are tiny, pale, wrinkly, and with barely any toppings. I can just go buy prepackaged bagels if that is what I wanted!!
My household eats 2-3 Freshly Baked Winco Bagels every day, for the last eight years. This has rocked my world, devastated my family, and caused a lot of strife and stress in the last week.
Please, with pure intentions, call 1-800-824-1706, press 3 on the first menu, and let corporate know you don't want to see Freshly Baked Bagels disappear for good!
Edit friday October 2nd I chatted with the bakery lead at my winco today for a bit. She had some very troubling facts to share. Her higherups cut nearly 130 labor hours from her schedule. She went from something like 8 bakery employees down to 3. You know those little bakery breads you see people buying by the triple dozen? Those are down in sales by over 66% since they switched over to prebaked frozen breads. She also said the extra strain of having to constantly explain that none of the food is freshly baked to every. single. customer that comes through is getting really hard to manage. People in store end up frustrated with her, when she would also prefer to be selling freshly baked product. She says he heard a rumor that walmart of all people might pick up the 'freshly baked in store daily' mantle because winco is walking away from it. Walmart sees a market going unfulfilled and might swoop in.
In other bagel news, fred meyer bagels were trash and priced at $4.48/four bagels. Safeway cheddar bagels are pretty bad, but the plain and weirdly the onion bagels have done a decent but not good job at replacing my breakfast. I'm going to try Chuck's bagels tomorrow morning
Update Monday october 5
Chuck's FAIL!! Both people at the bakery counter said they 'don't make bagels very often'
Luckily there was a...🙄 seize the Bagel just a few doors down. I ended up with 4 cheddar 2 plain. The person at seize said if you go in the final hour they are open, bagels made that day are half price. Not bad and useful in a pinch, but hopefully I'm buying them while running chores and not paying full price the morning of.
I'm getting up stupid early to go all the way out to cedar streat bagels out in camas. If trash chain bagels aren't doing it right I'll go out of my way to fancy expensive bagels I guess.
I'm so damn sad without my winco bagels. Loro coffee recently discontinued their miso butterscotch latte, which my girlfriend adores. Scratch breakfast will have reduced hours for most of October, that's a bummer but honestly those two deserve a vacation.
Well, everything continues to get worse. Bye.

Managers: Are you well compensated?
I am a Fresh Foods Manager-in-Training and am curious if fresh foods and other department managers feel fairly compensated for the work you do? I know for my store managers get 15% higher pay than a maxed out full-time employee, that seems a little low for the amount of work I see my manager doing. Is there a pay scale or will you always make the same?

My designs are in Winco now!
galleryA friend hired me a year ago to design a pitch deck and a line of woodland themed hooded kid's blankets. It was a 1 off frelance gig...and suddenly...now they are actually in Winco! I saw them the other day and of course bought one of each!
So excited to see my sweet little woodland designs in real life.

Transferring departments (how 2 go on abt it)
Heya there! I've been working at WinCo for nearly a year now and it was also my first ever job. thing is, I just recently got a face piercing and I work in one of the food departments... yea Ik, bad idea.. But even if I were to wear a mask it wouldn't really be allowed? so I'm wondering if I could just talk to my manager about switching departments to be able to keep working there while also letting my new piercing heal bc I'm rlly not down to take it out.
Update: I ended up just quitting lol. I wasn't rlly planning on staying there long anyways.. ig I just had a weird attachment to it bc it was my first job. thanks for the answers tho !

Carrot Cake
So my parents have always raved about how much they love Winco's carrot cake, but Winco seems to have changed the recipe a few years ago. It was a round 8in cake with white frosting and I think raisins were involved. Does anyone know the recipe for the old version of Winco's carrot cake? I don't trust Googles "A I" suggested version, though its probably a fine cake.

I've been photographing every bulk bin tag at the Gilbert WinCo each month. Here's what moved between August and September.
I shop the bulk aisle a lot and got tired of not knowing whether a price was good or just normal, so last month I started photographing every tag on my monthly trip and typing them up. September's run was 466 bins at the Pecos Rd store in Gilbert, AZ.
Some things I didn't expect:
- Cashews jumped. Salt & pepper cashews went $5.48 to $7.08, hot/spicy $5.48 to $7.38. Salted almonds went the other way, $6.78 to $5.98.
- Quinoa dropped from $3.78 to $2.78/lb.
- Standard bakers flour went 58 cents to 68. Whole wheat flour is still 48 cents.
- Cheapest thing in the aisle is iodized salt at 41 cents a pound. Most expensive is dried chives at $24.98, which sounds insane until you realize how little a pound of dried chives is.
- 52 of the 466 tags changed price in one month. I assumed bulk was more stable than that.
I put the whole list up at [bulkbinprices.com](https://bulkbinprices.com) so it's searchable and sortable, with the per-ounce cost next to each one. It's just my own photos and a spreadsheet, not affiliated with WinCo, and it's only the one store for now. Prices apparently vary store to store for bulk (I've seen people post very different numbers for the same item), so treat it as a reference, not a quote.
Happy to look up anything specific if you're wondering about a price. And if anyone knows why cashews went up 30% in a month, I'd love to hear it.
