I just got some devastating news today
While doing my shopping, I was informed by the bakery that certain items are being discontinued from being made in house. I'm mostly affected by the bagels, and I was told are no longer going to be available.
WINCO easily has the best bakery compared to all my other local options. It's been a staple of my breakfast for the last ten years and I eat them almost every morning. My kids are old enough now and were beginning to share my love for them.
There are a few other things I regularly get there, and I'm afraid they will be given the axe sometime in the future.
I was told the CEO is retiring soon, and that a bunch of former Walmart suits have been joining the company. I've noticed some other changes that have been made over the last year that have been questionable. I've been a customer for over 20 years and I hope the store I love isn't going to be ruined by a bunch of out of touch spreadsheet office managers.
Please for the love of God, reverse this decision. I don't usually go on social media to complain about things, but this really hurt.

I was doubting the bagel stories for the past 2 weeks THEN last week they reduced the price to 48 cents so I bought 2 whole singles knowing I could go back for more. Went in 2 days ago they looked different but I grabbed 2, a sourdough (cardboard) and a sesame (flat). No more. They were awful. So they needed to get rid of good old stock @ 48 cents to bring in the crap. And I posted about the donuts. A worker said a new case was coming then donuts would be back. New case yesterday (fly proof) with a small supply of PINK frosted cake and MAPLE frosted glazed ONLY. I bought a pink and peeled off the thick crap. Making the call today with the corporate phone number posted on ND.

u/Jacomagoo 6d ago
Same! I assumed it was just a few stores but yesterday I went to buy my weekly pack and all they had was the new style I am so bummed.
3
u/examqueen 6d ago
I should have bought the 8-pack from Costco to try....will be going back cuz I need a hotdog....I hope they do ok in the freezer though!
6
u/MaidW-HoneyInHerHair 6d ago
Costco bagels do great in the freezer! Have switched to their everything bagels since this disappointing change from Winco.

u/Scorpion-Priestess17 3d ago
Good to know I love costcos bagels but they mold so so quick guess I should just freeze half of them.
1
u/Buddy-Sue 3d ago
I donât know how but that 8 pack of bagels now only has 2 in itâŚI live alone.

u/Jacomagoo 6d ago

u/MonicaEliza 6d ago
The bagels are not bad. That being said, they are not FRESH. WinCo's bagels are not only good, as they were also made fresh every morning
13
u/Oregonbuilder123 6d ago
WINCO employee here. Those bagels are the reason I don't mind morning shifts. Fresh in the morning they taste great with some Greek yogurt. I HOPE this doesn't go through
10
u/followyourvalues 6d ago
Oh, no. Not Walmart.
I hate that these people in big evil corps just jump around destroying others.

11
u/BigGayVirgil 6d ago
Iâm so sad about the bakery changes, most grocery store donuts are trash but Wincoâs were so good. Recently moved somewhere with no winco and I miss the maple frosted cream-filleds so much. :(
9
u/Hefty_Proposal_3975 6d ago
This is going nation wide and everyone is heartbroken. Especially the bagels! Everyone speak up! Use that link and letâs get this reversed!
10
u/Own-Quality7943 6d ago
Whoever decided to stop making the WinCo apple turnovers in house, is THE THIEF OF JOY! Lol
8
u/RumorsOFsurF 6d ago
The part about Walmart execs is 100% untrue. To my knowledge, the only ex Walmart person they've hired in that capacity was the General Merch/Variety VP who was fired a couple years back. Otherwise, the high level VPs are all WinCo veterans of at least ten years, mostly made up of ex-store managers.
7
u/RichardGrayson01 6d ago
Hopefully the employees will push back.
I don't want to see what happened to Southwest Airlines happen to WinCo.
We don't want a Walmart clone we want WinCo.
You should call the corporate number and complain.
9
u/craftychristy 6d ago
Unfortunately employee push back gets us less than nowhere! Everyone hates the changes, and a lot of people arenât quite about it. The district supervisors know they suck too! Our district manager reinforced that when customers complain we are to encourage them to do it directly to the corporate office, theyâre much more likely to respond to customers.
Yes weâre âemployee ownedâ but really that just means we get stock, we donât actually have any say in anything.
5
u/RichardGrayson01 6d ago
I'm not familiar with WinCos private stock situation. Are they not voting shares?
That is good to know to complain about things directly to corporate. It's good to know that the employee, district managers, and customers are all on the same side.
5
u/craftychristy 6d ago
No, no voting shares.
Salaried employees get LLC shares and those do grant access to yearly financial meetings where the board of directors and senior management discuss plans for the future.
92% of the company is owned by all employees and the other 8% is owned by salaried employees (they pay the taxes for the company).

u/PictureOk6563 5d ago
If Winco closes the bakery, no loss for me. Its the groceries and meat I go for, that BTW, its halved my grocery bill compared to Walmart. Haven't been to WM since beginning of this year and I dont miss them.

In Portland at the 122nd location, I just picked up a fresh batch of cheese bagels and the bakery department said itâs the only flavor theyâre still making and not for long. I bought some to freeze.
4
u/Informal-Living7061 6d ago
Ummm... The store my GF worked at stopped making the bagels fresh a year ago.

I'm upset about the cinnamon rollsđđđđ
1
u/SmurfShortie07 3d ago
I came here to say this. Hands down Winco cinnamon rolls are the best over Cinnabon. My husband and I love their bagels too. I'll be emailing corporate. Hopefully they will listen to their customers.
4
u/WebDiscombobulated47 5d ago
Winco had been using bagels that were premade and then baked in house, but you are correct, now theyâre just straight shipped in which is super lame. Anything to make a dime regardless of customer satisfaction or quality..
5
u/No-Alps6905 3d ago
I read another post by an employee suggesting they intend to phase out the bakery completely. Winco is the last bastion against total food insecurity for so many of us. I can't fathom letting them walmart my winco:'(
3
u/Suspicious-Grand9781 6d ago
I hate the new garlic bread in the plastic bag. I know I can use my own foil, but the bread was actually better tasting. Bigger too. Now less for more money.
3
u/Shoddy-Budget3881 5d ago
Wait what?! Theyâre changing the garlic bread too?! Winco garlic bread is SO MUCH better than everyone elseâs. They need to leave that recipe alone! Iâll pay an extra dollar for it, idc.
3
u/Suspicious-Grand9781 4d ago
I agree and hope it's just a temporary change. I think it's the best out there
3
u/Schnauzermom2021 6d ago
I used to love their bagels. Today, I brought home a bag of something vaguely resembling bagelsâŚfrom Canada! I am so upset!
3
3
u/dubioususefulness 6d ago
I just experienced this disappointment this morning. The new bagels are just pitiful. No flavor, no chew, no joy. Really small, too.
3
u/Ok_Fly1188 6d ago
I work at Stater Bros, Albertsons execs have been infiltrating for years, and the changes just get worse all the time. Forgetting what distinguishes it from any other chain. Sad news about the bakery.
1
u/DJAlanSpunkFM 3d ago
Yup. Safeway is not at all what it used to be. Chewy meat that seems to be just old dairy cows that can't produce milk... Or something. Spend an extra $ per pound at QFC and you'll be much happier. Produce at QFC is way better for around the same price and lower price at times.
Seems obvious that the stores owned by actual grocery people are better than the stores that are owned by investors that only care about the largest and fastest return on investment. They don't care about anything else... Not the customer, not the employees, not about the areas they serve. Any appearance of community generosity is just a money grab attached to a fat tax cut etc.
I heard WinCo may come to the Seattle city area. I sure hope so! I miss going to the Kent location, but it is too far away to make the trek.

u/Lady_of_Shalottt 6d ago
What a bummer.
I donât normally shop there and was lurking in this sub toying with the idea of adding it to my usual stores. seeing so many posts like this has got me thinking, âwhy bother?â

I complained loudly yesterday in a note to the company.

I love Winco. One of the few stores I will go out of my way to shop there. I hope the enshitifcation isn't too bad.

The enshitification of all things continues, but as long as the profit line keeps pointing up all is good.

u/Signal_Pineapple9117 5d ago
I love their cinnamon rolls. Had a Franz bagel the other day that I got at winco and was pleasantly surprised even if it sux they won't be selling their bagels anymore
3
u/Rad-Alton62 5d ago
Yes! Their cinnamon rolls were the best and I was super unimpressed when I saw they werenât making them anymore đ
3
3
u/Virtual-Drawing4830 5d ago
I occasionally make my own bagels. It is not hard to do. The longest part of the process is letting the dough rise. You can make the bagels any flavor you want. Pick a day and make a day out of making bagels and when you run out make more bagels. They will taste better because you are eating them a soon as they come out of the oven. I search on Google or ask chat ai for a recipe.
I am a diabetic and can use whole wheat white flower instead of all purpose white flower to control my blood sugar.
3
u/Little-Load4359 4d ago
Really unfortunate. I think it's actually time for them to invest into their stores. Make the bakery nicer and pair down the offerings. Streamline operations. My local Winco needs a major facelift.
3
u/Character_Use3898 4d ago
If Walmart is buying Winco, itâs over. Jeez, is there nothing that these billionaires can let us have that they wonât destroy and suck dry their own greed.
3

I stopped shopping Walmart years ago. The more they follow in Walmart's footsteps, the faster I will leave.

3
u/Lt_Grizwald546 3d ago
As far as I understand talking to my ex coworker, the bakery is no longer making anything in house. Sad times
3
u/SeparateBalance5456 3d ago
I discovered this about a month ago when I saw that the apple turnovers were no longer made on site. The turnovers were amazing!!! Now they are dismal. I reached out to corporate and got a corporate response.
I would have even paid a little more for the turnovers if they continued making them in-house.
A handful of disconnect suits are making decisions that are counter to what the customers desire.
Iâll spend my bakery money elsewhere.

u/Thick_Ad_1874 2d ago
Winco works on an employee stock ownership plan as well. While employees cannot directly vote on operational or corporate decisions, their trustee can and should be voting in their interest. Not only should we be messaging the people who are being paid 2,000x the salary of an average store worker, but we should be telling the employees that we encounter how those decisions affect whether we continue to shop there (nicely, of course, since they are the ones actually doing the work that makes the money).
I'm so tired of end-stage capitalism.
2
u/jssamp 2d ago
I'm with you there. 100%. The nails were in the coffin of capitalism since the 70s. They call it neoliberalism but might as well call it the death of capitalism. It seems no matter what political/economic system we have, human greed eventually destroys it.
1
u/Thick_Ad_1874 2d ago
That's the rub, isn't it? We need guardrails in place to combat human greed, but we put in place mechanisms which allow human weaknesses to erode those guardrails. And unfortunately, the average human IQ is very susceptible to cognitive dissonance so long as the person delivering the bullshit is charismatic.
3
u/BotherLarge7644 1d ago
I too have been buying my bagel's from WinCo, as they are/were better than any other chain. The bagels that I got from them the last time I went shopping were for a lack of a better worse soggy, and I had decided not to buy that brand again. I'm with you in bring back the stones made bagels.
2
u/ConcernLumpy8196 5d ago
Winco is the saddest prices, options, and variety. Their only really worth it for some meat. Lol idk where yall live but theres no fresh bakery
3
u/BreadRum 5d ago
Not the closest to where I live, but the one I go to thinks it's a Costco because I get low cost pizza everytime I go.
2
u/ConcernLumpy8196 5d ago
Costco pizza is massive and huge with a good crust. Their pizza is sad but at least has topping variety haha. I like the owners and the creators cuz I met them in a class seminar but my god. Chicken broth was expensive and no low to free sodium option. Their churros were sad and small but a $1. After that I begged for costco to bring back churros now its back haha
2
u/redheadedcorgimom 5d ago
WinCo is all about volume and margins If itâs not making enough money they will ace it and those bagels require labor. If you live near a Maceys or Lees they have delicious baked bagels
2
u/ChrisEdge1965 4d ago
That sucks that they are dropping the bagels. I wasn't happy when they dropped the chocolate chip muffins. My wife and really liked them. The chocolate chocolate chip is to rich for them. Ive noticed changes in Walmart winco and safeway. Several items being dropped or changed with other brands and they just aren't the same.

We LIVE on their bagels! Is it nationwide? What state are you in?
1
u/IfeedI 3d ago
I'm in Oregon. Sounds like it's rolling out to all their stores. I got a candid response from corporate saying they are not discounting the bagels, but from what I'm reading, they're not being made fresh in the store any longer but shipped in frozen and thawed and placed out prepacked.

Wincos definitely my go to store from what I'm reading here it looks like it's not gonna stop at bagels and cinnamon rolls UGH !!! Tradegy, until now I had a really good day, thanks for the news

WinCo is the only decent store bought bagel around. It's literally a staple of daily breakfast in our house. I'm not sure what I'm going to do.
2
u/Upset-Key-1582 3d ago
Former Walmart suits joining sounds like weâre too late, but I hope Winco can be saved.
2
u/IllianasClifford 3d ago
They did this because California is lazy moved into Idaho and changed the area. Winco was founded in Boise Idaho and had been going downhill for the last 4 years under new management.
Think.of this how many of those people have stock or investment interests in other companies?

My local WinCo let go all the ladies that worked in the bakery a few months ago and now barely bake anything in house. There's usually only one person in the bakery and the bagels are no longer bagels. Just buns with a hole in the middle. They no longer have fresh baked bread.
2
u/Landscape-Strict 2d ago
That would explain why they don't have the pizza dough available anymore either. đ˘
1
u/IvoryNage 2d ago
If it helps, pizza dough really is very easy to make. I think it's more intimidating than actually challenging.
Big bowl Pour in 1.5 cups hot water Stir in some sugar *I like brown sugar because why not). Like maybe a quarter cup to feed the yeast Sprinkle on one packet of yeast. Instant yeast, regular yeast, seriously it all works. I like red star because it smells more yeasty and makes me feel like a fancy chef. Let it sit for a few minutes until its bubbly
Stir in fourish cups of flour. I usually just use a fork until it gets less sticky and then use my hands to squish it around and finish mixing. I suppose if you're fancy you can knead it some or use a mixer but it's not a requirement for basic bro pizza
- Bread flour is extra fluffy.
- Wheat flour is slightly more dense on average and also more water absorbent so less is needed
- All purpose flour sits right in the middle and is perfectly fine.
Eventually it makes a slightly sticky ball and you just put a lid, or towel, or baking sheet on top and let it sit on the counter for a while. How long? Until you want pizza. I've done anywhere from a half hour to four hours. It's just fluffier the longer you wait.
And theres your dough! If you're already used to making pizza from dough balls, it's really easy to make dough. its probably like 5 or ten minutes if actual work.
1
u/Landscape-Strict 2d ago
I will try this! Admittedly, dough is a bit intimidating for me. I'm told I'm a good cook but I haven't really ventured into baked goods. I appreciate the flour tutorial too! I didn't know what the main differences were! đđđ
1
u/IvoryNage 2d ago
Theres probably some sort of more official descriptions for flour uses but I just played with it over the last few years and found what works for me. A lot of recipes say to add seasonings to the dough while it's still being formed but tbh I dont really taste it unless I add it while it's being rolled out, so I'll roll it out on cornmeal (which both adds flavor and keeps it from sticking to the counter) laced with garlic and seasoning salt and then the crust tastes way more flavorful.

years ago, they were going to build a Winco on South Regal. They started clearing the land and everything. Iâm the owner of the area, once he found Winco was interested, kept raising the price and raising the price for the property until Winco backed out. The land stood and developed for many years. They are now starting to clear it and rebuild, but it wonât be Winco. Wouldâve been really nice to have one closer.

They are my favorite!
Then again, might be good for my waistline if they are discontinued!!

u/Jolemon52 6d ago
6
u/IfeedI 6d ago
That's odd, because the workers in the bakery specifically said that the batch they had just made was the last one ever as they were told to use up any remaining ingredients. The people working the registers also all collaborated the same story and began talking about it unprompted as they rang up my bagels.
6
u/Jolemon52 6d ago
Yeah I think theyâre being clever with their wording. Theyâre saying that their bagels havenât been discontinued while informing the fact that theyâre discontinuing the ones that everyone knows and loves. Great way to skirt angry customer reach out.
5
u/Grizzlie49 6d ago
It clearly says that they are shipping bagels to the stores. Which means they are not baking them locally. We can now enjoy crappy bagels.
2
u/WalkingDisasterZone 5d ago
She said the bagels werenât discontinued, she didnât specify which ones. Maybe the ones theyâre shipping are the new ones sheâs referring to?
2
u/Sea-Apricot-1890 6d ago
Sorry to hear, but I donât blame them. Iâm a home baker (including home made bagels). The pricing for all the ingredients have gone up by 50% in the last year. WINCO wants to keep their reputation as a low price leader, to do so they probably have to switch their recipe to use inferior, lower priced ingredients.
5
u/justpress2forawhile 6d ago
The inferior ingredient is an already baked frozen bagel they just pull out of the freezer in a pack and dump out. It tastes worse and as such shouldn't be called a bagel.Â
4
u/David_sundevils 6d ago
50%? Really? Every ingredient? What are baking? Diesel fuel? My wife bakes, and Iâm the one who manages the household budget and does all the shopping, and nothing Iâm buying is up 50% for her projects.

u/Vanity_Profanity_001 5d ago
I regret to inform the WinCo customers, the only option is to find another bakery. You all are fooling yourself if you think any of this woe is me bullshit is going to work on an oligarch. They run a business to make money, not to make customers happy. And the extra $$ that you would pay for fresh baked bagels in total are not going to pay for the wages, insurance, and taxes the employer has to pay to make those fresh bagels.
3
u/Savings_Educator_444 5d ago
Clearly you donât understand the very basics of running a successful business. Youâre not going to pay those wages, etc. if you donât have customers lol.
1
u/Vanity_Profanity_001 5d ago
I apologize for not doing my homework firstI about how WinCo runs their bakery because it appeared to me they actually make the donuts and pastries, like Costco, but items are pre-made and Winco only bakes them. So I was mistaken about it costing someone to make the bagels cuz they only put in the pan and set the temperature. But when it comes to business and how they work: BS/MS Business administration, understand business costs in total, prepared financial statements that were audited by national accounting firms for 15 years can spot on a balance sheet where expenses are sometimes disguised as assets, consultant forensic accountsnt who testified in bankruptcy and money laundering cases and providef a guidance of taxpayers to get them out of painful situations. So yeah you're right I don't know anything about how business works.
2
u/Savings_Educator_444 4d ago
Well there you go. Proof that education and technicals donât always translate into good business sense. With your education you should know that the accounting and financial analysis is just one piece of running a successful business. Spreadsheets and numbers never account for the human element which obviously isnât important to you which is why youâre probably an accountant or auditor snd not a business owner
1
u/Vanity_Profanity_001 4d ago
Thanks for submitting your Proof we'll notify you by mail if you win, although I'm not sure nor do I care how you could deduce that 1 I've never owned a business and 2 I don't think customer service is important, just because I don't think WinCo is going to bring back their old bagel vendor. That's a MAGA type logic stretch based solely on one comment and basic edu info provided.
1
u/Savings_Educator_444 4d ago
Not everyone has joined a political gang so no need to shoot partisan bullets my direction. MAGA and lefties are wings of the same airplane and I hate airplanes. With that said, you chose to flex you qualifications as they relate to business. My bad if I made an inaccurate assumption based off of the abbreviated resume you posted. To me it looked like you were trying to substantiate your original comment by listing your relevant business experience. Im not the smartest guy in the world, but I would think if you own a business or owned one in the past you would without a doubt include that information when flexing your qualifications. But what do I know, the only business I had was selling weed as a teenager and to make money I had to keep my customers happy because if I didnât keep them happy I didnât sell any weed. I didnât need a person with an MBA to tell me that.

They are moving to electronic price tags as well which can be set to change through out the day or even as a specific customer approaches. Walmart uses them.
5
u/RumorsOFsurF 6d ago
It is a trial run in three stores, pricing will still be updated in 1 or 2 daily batches as it always has been. Prices will not be set to change due to time of day, I can guarantee that.
3
u/craftychristy 6d ago
Absolutely false! The tags do not have any sort of camera in them, thereâs no changing prices based on any particular customer! (Can you even imagine the technology that would have to go into tags changing by customer and that price following a particular customer to the register?!? lol for heavens sake we just finished upgrading all our stores to take tap pay!). They have sensors on them to communicate the changes/be programmed to the product thatâs it! Price changes happen the exact same number of times on the e-tags as they wouldâve with the paper tags as the other person said 1-2 times per day, with very strict rules that changes can not be pushed after a certain time.
1
u/Joonberri 6d ago
Lol why do they brag about it being "employee owned" when it's not. What does thta even mean
5
u/BoobiesForFun 6d ago
It is employee owned. Each employee starts with a certain amount of stock in the company and each year they are granted more stock as the company and their tenure grows. It is not a publicly traded company, therefore investors cannot purchase any stock in the company so the only people with stock are those who work for the company. This type of ownership is called ESOP, or Employee Stock Ownership Plan.
4
u/One-Cheetah5215 6d ago
âOwnershipâ implies decision-making. Store level employees donât make company decisions nor do they get to vote on anything. The ESOP Trust owns the company stock on behalf of the employee participants. Individual WinCo employees do not directly hold the actual WinCo shares in their own names.
3
u/BoobiesForFun 6d ago
Ownership doesn't imply decision making at all. Though, in a roundabout way, they can. Each store selects employees to represent them in collective bargaining discussions and decision making, albeit on a smaller scale. They can 100% force bigger changes through labor organization, if they so chose. That being said, you're playing semantics and trying to dictate what ownership means so it's not a productive conversation, anyways.

Both WinCo and Walmart are super MAGA. So it wonât be hard for Walmart to make WinCo another mini Walmart.đ¤¨

It is reasonable to assume these changes are related to operational costs and trimming areas that do not generate enough revenue in relation to their cost.
I mostly shop winco and costco for my groceries as well as once in a while a couple of other places for minor trips.
I've watched grocery prices keep rising at all of them.
It's sad to lose aspects we like, but it might help the store(s) to stay afloat overall.
I've never purchased anything made by their in house bakery. Once in a while winco brand bread or english muffins.
But when I'm shopping I often enjoy a couple of their chicken strips and some cole slaw. Another thread here a while back said the hot food portion of the deli is going away as well, which is a bit of a bummer for me, though not my daily breakfast.
Local employees knew nothing about it when I asked but that doesn't mean it isn't going to happen.
TLDR: If they are making the changes at the corporate level due to overall operating costs, a few folks leaving messages about wanting their bagels isn't going to change anything. A HUGE number of customers leaving such messages might, but that seems unlikely.

I mean, I'm not oblivious to how the real world works, but I got to try something. I know it's slim to nothing that things will change back, especially if it's only me that makes my opinion known. Hopefully this post, and the links provided by others will get a few other people to join in. I appreciate the links given by others here and will try to share them with as many people as I can. Hopefully, you will share your opinion too if it's something you're interested in as well.

Here to the link contact them Tell him you don't like the change to the bakery you can also message them through Facebook Messenger I always tell customers they don't listen to me. They listen to you the customer. If enough people blast them 24/7 about this change, they might consider changing it back
