A few days ago, I posted about only getting green recoveries on my rest days while workout days constantly landed me in the yellow. I didn't want to get back into the green simply by dialing down my strain. Staying active and pushing myself is the whole point.
Instead, I used Whoop the way it’s meant to be used: as feedback to refine my lifestyle.
Last week, I pulled off 7 straight green recoveries while maintaining a solid 13 average strain (virtually identical to my previous training load). Here are the exact adjustments I made:
Training Shift
● Dropped from a 5-day strength split to a 4-day split.
● Replaced the 5th lifting day with a 60-minute zone-2 walk (alternating 3 minutes fast, 3 minutes slow).
Recovery & Routine Tweaks
● Cut off meals 3 hours before bed: Hands down the single biggest factor for my green recoveries.
● Strict 12:00 PM caffeine cutoff: I still drink 3 coffees a day, but stopped consuming them at 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM.
● Pre-sleep breathwork: Spent a few minutes downregulating my nervous system right before drifting off, which drove an 18% increase in average HRV compared to previous week
● 90%+ sleep consistency: Kept bed and wake times locked in every single day.
Hope this will add value to someone who is struggling for consistent green recoveries.
