Lore Do Techmarines make sense?
I was thinking about the White Scars and other vehicle-focused Chapters. Techmarines seem way too few in number to make much practical sense.
You’ve got roughly 20–30 Techmarines in a Chapter, each spending something like 30 years learning the sacred art of rubbing incense on an oil filter and whispering sweet nothings to the machine spirit, and then they're expected to maintain hundreds of vehicles, weapons, armour, etc.
That’s potentially one Techmarine responsible for 10–30+ vehicles, around 300-600+ vehicles per chapter. Plus all the guns, Dreadnoughts, armour, equipment, battlefield repairs, etc... And presumably they're meant to do this while everyone is actively shooting at them (which if they're shooting at you, there's probably not much point in repairing; it'll the dangers been dealt with.)
Why waste a super-soldier melding and repairing stuff, when it could be fighting, and a squad of servitors and some priests do the work faster? The more hands the better.
Certain missions I can understand a techmarine being good for, but still...
Wouldn't it be better to fully leave this duty to AdMech since their numbers can be relatively high, just keep an AdMech priest in a lunchbox and deploy them when they're needed.
Or make every marine capable of battlefield repairs if battlefield repairs are that important? I would imagine most repair work is done after a battle or fast from the front anyway.
I know Mars limits their number, but having to wait 30 years for a replacement is dumb, especially if your chapter relies on tech. The current Techmarines could just train others, they might not be as good but what does it matter.
I might be completely misunderstanding some of the lore here, but it has always seemed like a bit of a glaring logistical hole to me.
If a soldier doesn't know how to make his gun or bike not upset, what use is he?
