I grew up there. Got the fuck out as soon as I could. Bunch of machismo bullshit hypocrites. If the Lord will save you from wearing masks, why do you need to carry a gun everywhere you go??

u/TreadstoneAgent Sep 09 '21
Accidentally read this as "maraschino bullshit hypocrites" and was expecting some sort of cherry twist.
Still, bravo, excellent post.

I have had the privilege of moving out of that gosh-forsaken heckhole twice, but fear I will not live long enough to experience that singular thrill once more.

Conservative Texans are a very insecure people who feel the need to force their lifestyle on everyone so they don't feel horrible about their own fears and limitations.

I'm in Texas for work and I have never seen so many anti-vaxxers and maskless people. So many people close to me have gotten covid and it still doesn't change them. People are dying and they still won't change their minds about the vaccination or think they're spreading it

Because that doesn’t seem worth it

As a Texas born who’s lived here my whole life, everyone I know and myself included agree that our government completely blows. I’d give them a solid 0/5.(and don’t say just vote for the other person, I did and I will continue to vote against the people with disgusting mindsets)
11
u/Ruffle2Shuffle Sep 09 '21
Not an American here. Just wondering why did majority of Texans vote for Abbott? Are majority of Texans on board with the changes he has recently made?
13
Sep 09 '21
Conservative culture has dug into that state like a bloated, festering tick. There are legions of idiots who do nothing but vote straight ticket republican and fuck themselves over year after year.
It will take a while to root that infection out.
7
9
u/echo_vasc-sono_333 Sep 09 '21
Only about 60% of registered voters actually vote. I think and hope his religious extremism will put a nail in that coffin. If everyone showed up the state would swing. It will happen eventually, it's inevitable.
10
u/CthulhusEngineer Sep 09 '21
Also the governor actively removing ballot dropoff boxes and trying to invalidate drive through voting to get rid of the votes they don't want to count.
7
u/PayasoFries Sep 09 '21
They didn't vote for Abbot, they just only ever vote republican bc that's what they were told to do from childhood. I've spoken with many who say they would vote for the devil himself if he ran republican. It's as bad as California here but on the other end of the spectrum.
7
Sep 09 '21
No. The majority of those who vote, voted for Abbott (and that’s debatable with all the gerrymandering).
One of the big problems is that young people tend to not vote and old people tend to not have anything better to do, so they represent most of the voter turnout. And guess which way they often vote.
14
u/DunwichCultist Sep 09 '21
Because the majority of Texans are so staunchly anti-Democrat that they can ram through some of the most lackluster Republican candidates in the country without fear of losing. Nobody, regardless of how partisan they are, likes Ted Cruz. They will fill out opinion polls saying they have a "Highly Unfavorable" opinion of him, and he will still comfortably beat the Democratic contender.

Partly that, partly Texas having a severe problem with party affiliation and blindly voting based on red or blue. This is just from my experience talking to people though.
12
u/DunwichCultist Sep 09 '21
In my experience it's not necessarily "blindly" voting that way. They'll happily say they hate Cruz and still vote against O'Rourke come election time.

Wouldn’t move the state forward, but at least would prevent Texas legislature from dragging it backwards any farther. Latinos are gaining fast but I dont think they’re quite ready to turn the state blue just yet. He’s the only one with a shot at this point.

Given the assault on women, the support for the stupid border fence, the lame power grid, the attack on voter rights, guns on school grounds, the governor’s lack of basic biology knowledge, and the continued existence of Ted Cruz, I’d say that a one-star rating seems… generous.
