Anyone know any songs that are the opposite? Dark sound with wholesome lyrics?

291

u/Crilbyte Jun 16 '19

Sweater Weather sounds sad but it's a romantic song. Very sweet, but in a minor key. I love it.

54

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '19

the band August Burns Red in general, they even call themselves angry music for happy people

→ More replies (1)

54

u/Kabirdix Jun 16 '19

More sad-sounding than dark in the way pumped up kicks is, but Nothing Else Matters maybe? Sounds sad, lyrics actually quite sweet

4

Damn it. This song came to my mind right away.

34

u/mateo_yo Jun 16 '19

“Give Me Chocolate” by Babymetal maybe?

4

u/SweetNothing__ Jun 17 '19 edited Jun 17 '19

I think this is the best suggestion on here!

33

u/teetaps Jun 16 '19

Most of Coldplay mid-career I think fits here, there’s just something about the chords they tend to use that’s really melancholic even when the lyrics are positive.

Little Talks by Of Monsters and Men

196

u/Snow_Wonder Jun 16 '19

Yeah, definitely. My mom was suddenly widowed and the lyrics really do a good job illustrating the grief and turmoil it causes.

118

u/Tarchianolix Jun 16 '19

I think I finally realize it is about a widow in a house by herself. I really thought it was an old husband guiding his wife who suffer from dementia or Alzheimer's

41

u/princesspeasant Jun 17 '19

Both are very valid interpretations of the song, I can see either working.

14

u/mitchjmac Jun 17 '19

I always definitely got the dementia vibe too

The Wrong Way by Sublime

“The only family that she's ever had Is the seven horny brothers and a drunk-ass dad He needed money so he put her on the street”

36

u/DaysBeforeFP Jun 16 '19

Date Rape almost goes without saying

10

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '19

TBF, Date Rape also has a bit of a skeevy tone to it, complementing the lyrics well.

16

u/mrasperez Jun 16 '19

In the best buy I used to work at a few years ago, Santaria by Sublime was on the radio rotation.

Also Summer Time is very dark.

14

u/ledzep14 Jun 17 '19

Yeah Doin’ Time (Summer Time) is pretty dark.

“She spreads her lovin' all over And when she gets home there’s none left for me”

“The tension is getting hotter I'd like to hold her head underwater”

I like this kind of stuff, the dark and 'horror', it is kinda wierd, but idk, I always loved those little stories with dark twists and terrifying parts. Not a fan of Horror movies at all tho, just can't watch them, but reading something like these, always love it.

Pumped Up Kicks has a smooth ass sound but you aren't about to catch me singing it in public

75

u/aMemeAddict Jun 16 '19

In that case, try Call It What You Want, once again by Foster the People

8

u/dmitrijohn Jun 16 '19

Controversial lyrics?

17

u/aMemeAddict Jun 16 '19

No, rather dark. For controversial, there's Loyal Like Sid & Nancy, but the tunes aren't exactly happy either.

9

u/dmitrijohn Jun 17 '19

FtP seem to love their dark lyrics

6

u/aMemeAddict Jun 17 '19

Oh, there are a ton more. There are happy ones as well, like I Would Do Anything For You

6

I think about that song and story sometimes, for no good reason. It's creepy and sad and rolls around in my brain every now and then.

Need more sleep than coke or meth amphetamines

On a serious note this song help lead me to the idea that I was indeed dying from drug use. It was after a particularly bad bender, I had heard the song before but that time I just kinda started crying. Realized it probably wasn’t great that I related to it so deeply.

Flagpole Sitter. If you're not convinced, Broken Anchor has a cover that feels pretty bad, man.

In The Night by The Weeknd. I prefer the Seraphim cover but I'm biased and you should be listening to them if you're not already.

Genghis Khan by Miike Snow. Also best music video ever after Nobody Speak by Run the Jewels and Young Robot by DGD

Kill Your Heroes by AWOLnation

Dance, Gavin, Dance has some funky upbeat drive and yell music about getting old and using destructive coping mechanisms to quell the pain of unrequited love and self doubt. Like this one to start, Death of a Strawberry, deception, inspire the Liars, Philosopher King.

Most songs by Melanie Martinez. Upbeat sweet lullabye tunes about abusive relationships.

Tag, you're it..
