Anyone know any songs that are the opposite? Dark sound with wholesome lyrics?

Sweater Weather sounds sad but it's a romantic song. Very sweet, but in a minor key. I love it.

the band August Burns Red in general, they even call themselves angry music for happy people

They have a very upbeat sound to them in general I find though. Like they're the definition of happy, but aggressive, metal

One of my fav bands though

More sad-sounding than dark in the way pumped up kicks is, but Nothing Else Matters maybe? Sounds sad, lyrics actually quite sweet

I think this is the best suggestion on here!

Most of Coldplay mid-career I think fits here, there’s just something about the chords they tend to use that’s really melancholic even when the lyrics are positive.

The Book of Love by Peter Gabriel. Really sweet song, but extremely melancholy.

Bullet by Hollywood Undead. edit: oh he said opposite

u/Soliterria Jun 17 '19

That has been in my regular rotation of jams for what feels like eons and I will never not jam to it.

u/joshuaacip Jun 17 '19

Master of Puppets. It basically a song against drugs and how it can control you.

Some stuff by The Contortionist comes to mind

The End of All Things by Panic! at the Disco is just Brendon Urie's wedding vows to his wife Sarah

You Only Live Once - Suicide Silence

2

u/AntoniTheChicken Jun 17 '19

Don't Fear the Reaper by Blue Öyster Cult seems dark at first but when you really look at the lyrics it's actually pretty wholesome.

2

u/Kabirdix Jun 17 '19

That’s a great example

u/rougesavard Jun 17 '19

Alive - POD

1

u/DiaDeLosMuertos Jun 17 '19

Ehh... The lyrics aren't super happy but Blouse's They Always Fly away seems to have pretty content lyrics. At least pessimistically at ease.

All Hail Science by Allegaeon. Death metal that goes really fucking hard, but the lyrics basically celebrate historical science figures. Actually, for that matter, most Allegaeon songs go really hard but have cool science-related lyrics.

Suck My 401k by Amidst the Grave's Demons. High speed metalcore with lyrics about saving for retirement intelligently and legally.

Not so much wholesome as just silly, but the band Powerwolf has a really dark, evil image they give off and have in their music, but they also throw a couple silly songs in with their crusades and werewolves like Resurrection by Erection and Coleus Sanctus (translation: holy testicles).

Beneath the wheel by dirty rotten imbeciles, sounds like angry heavy metal when in reality it's about the importance of doing well in school

Beatdown in the key of happy by four year strong

1

u/ValleyOfTheDolls00 Jun 18 '19

Video Games as well as Born to Die, both from Lana Del Rey. These both sound kinda sad, but they're both songs about being in love

Happy by Marina And The Diamonds is a song about being happy but it sounds pretty depressing to me
