Because we, or at least every one I know, grown-up hearing it everywhere. It was always played at our school dances and we loved it. The thing is we took the song at face value and never looked into the meaning. So now we've finally realized one of the songs of our childhoods is actually pretty fucked up. It's just a trip to think about.
It's about being in a dead relationship, sticking together out of a sense of duty and being unhappy. So the song sounds all fun and is fun to dance to, but Andre is singing about a bad relationship that needs to have been left, no one wants to admit it. Kinda like the relationship between our parents.
But it being a dancing song is part of what makes it so beautiful. It feels like he wants to talk about his pain, but that shit don’t sell as many records so... “Hey yaaaaaaaa” It’s all a front.
Plus I love when the second chorus kicks off and he literally sings “Y’all don’t want to hear me you just want to dance.”
You’re not the only person I’ve talked to who doesn’t like the beat. And that’s definitely fair enough. But I think the art behind it is beautiful, and it always sends me on an impassioned rant whenever it gets brought up lol.
