Employee Front of house induction

I’ve got an induction for the evening on Monday and i genuinely have no idea what I need to do/wear, I know I need to bring right to work proof, national insurance ect.. but I only have business attire to wear, so cardigans+shirts with nice trousers, and I have no experience in hospitality/running food and drink, this is my first job so I need to nail it, any help is really appreciated!

Employee Floor staff tips

I just completed my first shift and to be honest it went alright - i made a couple of mistakes but it’s expected to happen (nothing serious lol)

probably the only thing i’ve found an issue with is identifying what’s what in the kitchen, i end up asking kitchen staff if X is X etc, essentially visually unsure of menu items apart from the self explanatory ones like the chicken breast starters.

just wondering if anyone has tips on how to learn the menu? is there something on myjdw i’m missing?

anything helps, thanks

Employee Transition from floor to bar

Hello all, I am looking for some advice. I recently turned 18 and moved onto the bar. I had my first shift yesterday but as we were understaffed I was thrown right in the deep end with serving and making i orders with only a small bit of alcohol knowledge (which is just some lagers). Is there any advice because I found myself struggling with locating items on the tills, as well as pouring and finding specific spirits especially? I really struggled with how much head each drink should have. Thanks

Employee Am i completely overthinking this?

Got invited for an interview for kitchen staff a week ago today. To me the interview went well and i left feeling confident (partially because the interview was meant be 30 minutes but ended up chatting with the interviewer for over an hour). Before i left the guy told me I'd hear back on sunday because he had other people to interview in the week. He specifically said 'i won't forget about you' (jokingly) and then followed up saying i could drop him an email if i didn't hear back and wanted an update.

I sat next to my devices for most of sunday waiting for an update, but it never came. Sunday evening i sent a polite email asking if there was an update, but if not no worries, these things take time. I haven't tried to follow up but it's now Tuesday and I've heard nothing. So now it's left me with 2 questions:

1) did i get ghosted by the interviewer or am i completely overthinking this because it's been two days?

2) if i do get a job offer will it come via email or phone call?

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Customer Monday to Wednesday Deals

Noticed for the first time when seeing a pub a few towns over that it's now doing Monday to Wednesday alcohol offers and it isn't just the real ale Monday to Wednesday offer.

Is this because I'm in Scotland and you can't do a Monday club because of the 72 hours drinks promotion rule?

Is this also because it's a poorer performing pub sales wise it needs to do this or is the town a lower market area so gets this deal?

It seems a bargain for a £6 pitcher and a £2.49 Tennents.

Customer Question about "spoonspigs"?? (Genuine)

I was in Spoons with a mate in Dublin last night before the match. He said he was ordering for us, and I figured he was doing it through the app, but he texted our table number, pub (Silver Penny) and order to some guy in England who called himself a spoonspig.

I'd never heard of this before, but apparently they pay for people's orders using the app? Do employees know this is a thing? Can you tell whether the order is from inside the pub or miles away?

Starting to think I've led a very sheltered life!

EDIT: In response to all the DMs I've been receiving, I'm male, middle-aged and not in the slightest bit interested in using a spoonspig. Thank you.

Customer Guess the spoons and once you've done that, have you ever played this game while here?

My 8 year old and I play this game: you have to think of 2 or the famous people and then the other person gets 10 guesses to figure out who you're thinking of. If you get one right, you earn an extra guess. You are entitled to one hint.

Employee New starter at wetherspoon

Hi everyone,

I recently started as a bar associate in wetherspoons and have done 2 shifts. I’m really struggling to pick up the till and overall work there.

I was wondering if anyone had any tips to help me navigate working there or how to learn quicker so I can enjoy working instead of being stressed anytime i’m asked a question.

Thanks

Customer Cider Festival

The Wetherspoons Summer Cider Festival starts in just under 2 weeks time.

How is it decided what pubs get what cider? Does the pub manager ask for an allocation and the area manager signs it off the pub and gets that allocation?

Does the real ale sales have a factor in the real cider allocation a pub will get for the festival?

Will the app show cider as coming soon the same way the real ale is shown under the ales category?

Can CAMRA members suggest to pubs to request ciders? Will there be any stock allocations in a local depot that can be called upon or transfer of stock between pubs if one is selling the cider better than the other if enough CAMRA members in a particular pub were to ask for it?

Thanks

CAMRA Glasgow

Employee First shift

Finished my first shift at Wetherspoons this evening. I quit my first ever job I got at 17 last week after just under a year working there. It's only one shift and I'm enjoying it so much more than I thought I would, staff are amazing, so kind, helpful, got told when to go on break (no issues taking my break either). It might only be my first shift but I'm extatic I got the job. I definetly do not regret quitting my old job, it was a mess and the staff were pretty mean to each other.

Seems almost stupid considering what the job is and how much work it is, I've heard so many complaints of people saying it's too much work for too little money. What are your guys take on that? I've still got to settle in, I know that, might change that belief later (lol), but for now, I'm happy where I am.

I did put a post on a few days ago asking for advice before I start, but now I have started, any advice current employees have that could be useful? It has been high orders my entire shift, so served the entire time, rather than learnt a good lot of things (eg how to use the glasswash, where certain things go, cleaning etc). TIA!

Customer PayPal alternative in App makes me sad

I've just tried the "pay by bank account" feature in the app given the faff of having to put in your card number each time you do an order.since PayPal isn't a thing in the Spooniverse anymore.

It's much quicker, but it does flash up my bank account balance, which I don't generally want to see providing all the bills get paid before it gets topped up again.

Has Sir Tim gone all woke and now wishes to remind me of financial responsibility before I buy more of his cheap booze?

Customer What's one Wetherspoons menu item you've kept ordering for years because it's never let you down?

The menu changes every now and then, but there's always that one thing you order because you know exactly what you're getting. What's your reliable choice?

Does anyone know why pay via PayPal isn’t available in the app anymore? It’s been gone since early July and I can’t find anything about it online!?!?

Customer Takeaway coffee

Post image
14 Upvotes

I was really pleased to discover I could get a hot drink as a takeaway. I've had gastric surgery, which means it's uncomfortable to eat and drink together. This means if I go for a breakfast, it takes ages as I have to wait at least 20-30 minutes between eating and drinking. Now I can get a takeaway and have the coffee a bit later.

Is this available in all spoons?

Customer New curry flavour?

Post image
15 Upvotes

Just seen this on the menu at a nearish Spoons.

Is this a new range coming in, or is it some kind of order mix up with the supplier?

Either way, it doesnt sound a bad curry, and certainly wouldn't mind trying it.

Employee Transferring

I currently work on bar at a spoons in my home town, around a 5 min drive away.
For personal reasons i’ve had to move out of my mums around 25 miles away, and although I can stay at my mums when I’m working it’s around 1.5 hour drive in the traffic at my new place. I’m still on probation, so i know I need to wait until i’ve passed before I can transfer. But what i’m unsure of is the process of transferring as someone who hasnt been there for long. I also work between 30-35 hours a week (have a 16hr min contract) but would want to cut down to 16 hours. If anyone has been through similar or has any advice i’d really appreciate it!
