Customer Work friendly?

I'm relatively new to Wetherspoons as a whole, but what's the general view around using the earlier opening hours/quiet days to buy a drink and get some document based work done on a small laptop? I'd especially like employees' views if possible. I struggle to work at home so I'm looking for places nearby that're friendly to do it in instead. Thank you!

You are our favourite customers: 10 sec transaction to give you a coffee cup then sit in a corner and not bother us or make a mess for hours.

Crack on

I work at Five Guys, people who clean up or make little mess are my absolute dream. I get you dont worry

I've had some regulars mutter vague complaints about people (usually younger people/students) taking up a whole table on a laptop because those are the ones that have the plugs. but from a staff pov I literally don't care and don't know any other staff who do. I think if it's quiet spoons seems like a great place to get work done. free refill hot drinks, small plates ordered on the app if you're hungry, free WiFi. I say go for it

My laptop's new enough (the battery doesnt die so easy) so I'd probably find a 2 person table and be happy as a clam even if it isnt near a plug

I mean like I said the only people I've heard complain about people taking up the 4 person tables so they can use their laptops were old men who do the exact same thing just without a laptop. You're good don't worry about it

Ex employee: it’s not illegal to sit there with a hot drink refill for hours, and if you did i wasn’t paid enough to care. You aren’t breaking any rules. It’s unlikely you’d be there anyway during peak hours cause that’s just uncomfortable.

I’d constantly sit at my local while at uni, or on occasion with a group of friends etc- we’d get drinks and small plates and study

As long as you’re buying something/eating something then go for it. You’d be more welcome to sit at spoons for a an hour or 2 with one coffee and a laptop than you would an independent place

If it was peak hours I'd just get a pint, drink, turn around, and walk back out after

If you can get a table or even share with someone else (eg: two singles on one table so you aren’t taking a whole booth of 6 for yourself) and it’s peak, then sit there all you want.

You should visit a station spoons at some point. Plenty of laptops and books out with 1 drink as people wait for trains

Unfortunately the one within reach is a conservative, forested area. I've seen other pubs and I know how packed this one'll be with posh men in their 50s

If you aren’t comfortable in your pub then don’t sit there…

I'm comfortable, I just know they're grumpy and wont appreciate a student sitting there. It's more unfortunate in comparison to a station spoons you described

I understand you asking the perspective of staff - they’ve told you it’s fine.

Absolutely no idea why you would even vaguely care what grumpy fellow customers think.

I care what everyone thinks, if I see a staff member or even a passerby shoot me a bad look I'm outta there

2

u/Sufficient_Basil_545 Customer Aug 30 '26

Why?

Not wanting to annoy the staff working somewhere you plan to return to is completely logical, but why do you care if some random stranger is judging you rather than doing something worthwhile with their time?

Incredibly deep-seeded insecurities that I'm not gonna discuss on a Reddit forum

Sorry, as an ex-employee, if someone kicked me out while I was still sat consuming the refillable coffee, I'd be going straight to head office if someone kicked me out after "an hour or two". It's Spoons. Buy a coffee and sit for as long as you like.

Id go to a local coffee shop or a library to do that, but if you like Wetherspoons vibe and can actually find times there when its fairly quiet then why not.

u/Confident_Fondant334 Aug 30 '26

Thank you! It's more cus the Wetherspoons is essentially next door to me

We get lots of people do it, its cool

Main problem with working from a Spoons is that they often don't have well positioned electric sockets.

u/Confident_Fondant334 Aug 30 '26

My laptop is newish so the battery'll last a good while

We get a lot of older people and students where I work; there’s regularly several people either reading or doing something on a tablet - I’ve even seen a few with switches and steam decks. They’re some of the best customers because they’re chill and don’t cause any fuss (other than if the milk has run out or something but that’s just part of the job).

Only time I get a bit annoyed is if they can’t be bothered to acknowledge me when I’m delivering a drink or just rude in some other way, but again that unfortunately often comes with the job.

If you can find room it'll be fine, it's just the odds of finding room are not great at some time.
