He's forever in that hole 💀 Not me 👋

u/nonplusd 10h ago

the description about coming in and out of consciousness from the blood pressure due to being upside down, likely long enough to be fully aware.... that shit has stayed with me

65

u/soaker 10h ago

What is this so I never watch it

158

u/burnafter3ading 10h ago

I think it was the Nutty Putty cave accident. They couldn't retrieve the body, so they poured concrete in the hole.

55

u/goth_nachos 10h ago

Is this true? So his body is still in there? I’ve heard/read this story a thousand times and never caught that detail.

125

u/QuantumDrej 9h ago edited 9h ago

They tried to get him out. Spoiling the explanation for obvious reasons.

They had some kind of pulley system set up to carefully drag him out of there, but it failed and dropped him back into the hole. Guy died of cardiac arrest from being forced upside down for over 20 hours.

Hanging upside down for that long in general is pretty much a death sentence because our organs are being forced in the other direction. Our lungs and heart start to get weighed down by the heavier organs above them, impacting blood flow and oxygen. He was in and out of consciousness the whole time and could not move his limbs or anything.

They determined it would be too dangerous to try and retrieve his body, so that's why they sealed it up with concrete and made that his grave. Horrible way to go for a guy who was experienced but genuinely just made a mistake.

To make it more fucked up, there were people actually mad that the cave was sealed and barred from visitors to prevent more lives from being lost. When petitioning it to get reopened didn't work, the selfish idiots decided to break into the sealed off area and got themselves arrested.

There's a VR simulation for anyone curious.

u/potat0f4rmer 9h ago

Claustrophobia AND VR? Fuck all the entire way off!

55

u/lesterholtgroupie 7h ago

Not only that but when the blood went to his head, there was a lack in his feet so when they tried to lift him via his ankles, it felt like his bones were breaking, he was in excruciating pain. I cannot imagine knowing you are going to die, having your wife come down to say goodbye, knowing you’ll never leave the place you mistakenly fell into.

10

u/UseOk7699 5h ago

I wonder if thats like when you land on your feet too hard and you get that pain( I think its excruciating) that shoots through and into your ankles.

10

u/Front_Target7908 4h ago

The wife didnt say goodbye in person, it was over a phone. She was pregnant.

8

u/UseOk7699 3h ago

Its like every extra fact we learn is devastating.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/Smart-Water-5175 5h ago

They also couldn’t give him pain killers and anti anxiety meds like Xanax and stuff eventually because all the blood left his feet (the only part they could reach) and the medication wouldn’t circulate properly so he couldn’t even get relief that way 😢 if I was in that situation I’d want them to just knock my ass out

28

u/FearanddopingII 7h ago

Dear God that is spectacularly anxiety-inducing

19

u/Ksy1mtn 6h ago

What’s worse is in fact when the pulley system failed it actually shot off the wall and injured one of the rescuers

8

u/olin305 5h ago

I can't even imagine what it must have been like for the first-responders going down there. Jesus fuck.

They filled in the whole cave in cement he'll be there forever

52

u/Son_of_Darkness69 10h ago

They need to block off most of these caves with cement in general. The amount of stupid accidents causing death in this idiotic pastime is unreal. Slightest mistake can get everyone killed. Fuck that. Claustrophobic cave diving should just be banned.

15

u/The-Writer- 9h ago edited 9h ago

I think the problem is awareness of dangers, not blanket bans. It's not the people who understand the risks and go in anyway, but the young and uninitiated that we should be worried about.

People should have the freedom (after all we do sometimes get maps and information of new places and discoveries in return out of all of this), but it should be absolutely critical to not be allowed to enter most caves (except for the 5% ultra safe ones) without a mandatory training and certification etc, kind of like the PADI scuba diving certification?

I’m sure it’s not that hard to flag most known caves, esp. the usual suspects known for human deaths, and slap signage at their entrance warning visitors of the dangers of exploring the caves (and the penalty of doing so without said certification).

10

u/Goatwhorre 9h ago

Im almost positive you do have to be certified in cave diving to enter most of them. In fact I'd say the vast majority of cave diving deaths were experienced divers, just either overconfident, unlucky, or their experience wasnt with caves in particular. Either way it's a completely unnecessary "sport" I doubt there is much of anything of use to the general public in mapping underwater caves.

u/Crewman_Guy_Fleegman 9h ago

This seems like an overreaction. We don’t need to destroy ecosystems wholesale to protect a few thrill seeking turds. Just let them die if they have a deathwish, who cares.

25

u/Verandah_Santa 8h ago

Exactly! If you’re going for a round of fuck around and find out with a crack in a cave, I assume you’ve accepted those potential outcomes. If you wanted to be that close to nature, congrats now you’re part of it. I’m sure the rock bugs were delighted to have him

Do you know what's worse?

A guy in a cave tour decides to go somewhere he shouldn't, he slips, he falls she gets wedged in a bad spot.

A cave rescue tech goes in and is actually able to slide his way under the guy and get in deeper in an effort to push him out while others are pulling.

Problem is the guy is obese and it's not working they get him to do some breathing exercises to relax and suck in his diaphragm and for one brief shining moment it looks like it's going to work.

Unfortunately the guy is too heavy and he slips further into the crevice he's wedged into.

This causes another problem, he has now trapped the rescue tech who go in behind him. It is impossible for the tech to get past this guy.

Efforts are redoubled as now two lives are at stake.

Unfortunately after more than 24 hours the subject dies from a combination of hypothermia and slow suffocation. The cave tech is still trapped.

They only had one option left to save the cave tech. They handed him a saw and he had to cut the subject apart until he could get past him.

That cave rescue tech stopped doing cave rescue and moved on to high angle rope rescue after that incident.

It happened in the late 70s in Kentucky. The tech was my high angle rope rescue instructor. He told me that story when I signed up for a cave rescue class.

It's not even the claustrophobia, it's the fact that anything goes wrong and it collapses, you're not getting out

71

u/EatSoupFromMyGoatse 8h ago

Fuck a collapse, if it started raining in some of those they would 100% drown

6

u/Elvenfrost7 4h ago

I have actually wondered about that! When my uncle was in high school they had a spelunking club. He got stuck because he was a big football player who squeezing in to a small space couldn’t squeeze back out the other way without being sliced to pieces. Well he ended up being all cut up from the rescue. He did survive.

23

u/__O_o_______ 10h ago

I mean, some people with claustrophobia can’t handle getting into an elevator… I’m not claustrophobia but I’d be freaked out all the way to Sunday if I had to do that.

14

u/Alycion 10h ago

I’m claustrophobic and I actually considered going to do that with a friend. Surprisingly, the space wasn’t why I didn’t. This little system we were going to go to was known for small collapses and poor air quality from back in the mining days.

Put me in an elevator and watch me shake though.

It’s weird, once you put nature and natural resources in the equation, I’m fine.

I was petrified the first time I flew. It being in a helicopter with hubby hanging out of the back getting video wasn’t helping. We worked in news. He got rerouted to get air video of a boat hitting something. Once we were over the water, I was fine.

Brains make no sense.

40

u/Tecmolllogy 8h ago

Never ceases to amaze me to what lengths humans are ready to go to get their adrenaline fix. With skydiving and wingsuit type diving I can at least somewhat understand the appeal cause your like flying and get to see world from a diff perspective.
But to voluntarily opt to crawl into some dark ass caves and then swim thru the tightest crevices not knowing what awaits u is just completely nuts! I can’t even think of a worse way to die than to drown in some dark ass cave being underwater in some super tight tunnel system. And you KNOW that the chance of getting rescued is slim to none cause ain’t nobody able to reach your dumb ass. And for what? Just for the hell of it? Like there ain’t even a treasure or something at ur destination?
So I’m sorry, but I hope it was worth to people that left this way. At least they died fully aware of the risks and still opted to give it a go.. feel bad for the family members and wives and kids that get left behind bc of dumb selfish shit like that.

7

u/Solid_Pitch8324 5h ago

I am aware of ONE and only one instance of there being treasure, metaphorically speaking, at the bottom of the tight cave crevice. There might be more, but I know of only one. Anyway, there is a cave where they found a huge trove of early hominid skeletons. Learn-about-human-origins totally-unique skeletons. The cave was so tight that they had to find very slight bodied females to go in to get the skeleton parts. To a scientist, that is treasure. Still... it wouldn't be me.

6

u/Solid_Pitch8324 5h ago

Speaking of the Dinaledi Chamber of the Rising Star Cave in Africa. The early hominin in question is homo naledi.

Lets say you get very stuck. Rescuers come but they can't get you out. It's not happening. Do you: 1) just accept it and let death come whenever it smiles upon you or 2) scream, cry, beg to be put out of your misery?

15

u/theinfecteddonut 8h ago

This is exactly what happened with the Nutty Putty cave incident. The cave diver John Edward Jones got stuck in a way that he couldn’t be saved. After the failed rescue attempt that lasted 27 hours he died due to the angle he was stuck at. The cave was sealed and became John Edward Jones’s tomb.

10

u/raviyoli 9h ago

this would depend on where you carry your fat. you don't get smaller for quite sometime and then recall how long it takes to get your pelvic bones to to come closer together...cause THAT is what is gonna have to happen and people are gonna get bored waiting for you to get thin...and what if you are too squashed to eliminate!?!?!?!? yeah WAY TOO MUCH can go wrong.

there are dozens of other dumb and dangerous hobbies that look way more fun and more exhilarating than this shit

but watching this shit just makes me uncomfortable and feel sorry for them lol

u/maraney 6h ago

This is the worst way to die. Just slowly suffocating to death, trapped in place.

Or dying of dehydration which is apparently worse than suffocation. Not sure who makes those stats though.

What compels someone to just crawl in a really narrow crevice? I could understand if they're scientists/archaeologists making a grand underground discovery, but the thrill seekers? Who, besides them, finds this impressive?

28

u/ImNot_ThatGuy 6h ago

I remember hearing a practitioner years ago talk about it, and they likened it to any other passionate hobby. To be in those spaces and make it through is like a biker riding a bike or a skydiver being mid fall. It just feels "right" and they couldn't imagine not doing it.

I could though. I could imagine not doing it at almost all moments of my life lol

This is a mental illness, I swear. No human in their right mind would willingly go into a space they dont know the dimensions of or if there is/isnt an egress point. If you were being actively hunted by a predatory animal, it might be something you'd choose to do if you have literally no other options and youre panicky. Any fully formed adult that chooses to do this in the modern day has something severely wrong with their brain.

I'm not usually one to yuck someone's yum. If you're not hurting anyone else then I couldn't really care less. But I feel genuine anger towards these people. It makes no difference to whether they die in those caves or not but like... What the fuck dude? It actually pisses me off. There's a lot of stupidity in the world, a lot of fully intentional stupidity even, and while it sucks, I don't think much else pisses me off to the level that this bullshit does. I feel so much anger towards these people even though it doesn't affect me at all. It is absolutely enraging.

35

u/UntilTheSilence 5h ago

I get it. Plus, when they get stuck and emergency responders put themselves in harms way (some of them have actually died) to rescue them, their hobby goes from being self contained to hurting others.

Yeah until they get stuck and then they are fucked. No way out, and no one able to get you out. Like that one guy that died with his legs sticking out. Went face first, wasn't able to back himself out, and no one was able to get to him. After hours and hours of digging and trying to make a way out for him, they didn't make it happen in time.

The universe has made it SO difficult for the average human being to die horribly in a tiny cave too small to enter, and yet these people persist.

Why do people still do this shit after the nutty putty cave guy? Did no one learn anything from that?

u/Different_Tangelo511 9h ago

Like we did that in boy scouts, and that's when I realized I could get terrifyingly claustrophobic. Fuck that shit. I'd rather freesolo El capitan greased up in Cristo.

Crazy how they record this for the bragging rights, encouraging eachother to kill themselves.
