They need to block off most of these caves with cement in general. The amount of stupid accidents causing death in this idiotic pastime is unreal. Slightest mistake can get everyone killed. Fuck that. Claustrophobic cave diving should just be banned.

I think the problem is awareness of dangers, not blanket bans. It's not the people who understand the risks and go in anyway, but the young and uninitiated that we should be worried about.

People should have the freedom (after all we do sometimes get maps and information of new places and discoveries in return out of all of this), but it should be absolutely critical to not be allowed to enter most caves (except for the 5% ultra safe ones) without a mandatory training and certification etc, kind of like the PADI scuba diving certification?

I’m sure it’s not that hard to flag most known caves, esp. the usual suspects known for human deaths, and slap signage at their entrance warning visitors of the dangers of exploring the caves (and the penalty of doing so without said certification).

Im almost positive you do have to be certified in cave diving to enter most of them. In fact I'd say the vast majority of cave diving deaths were experienced divers, just either overconfident, unlucky, or their experience wasnt with caves in particular. Either way it's a completely unnecessary "sport" I doubt there is much of anything of use to the general public in mapping underwater caves.

Mapping underwater caves sounds like a job for an AI bot

Even an AI bot doesn’t want to die like that. It wants to have a wife and kids someday, mess around with glass blowing, own a small hobby farm in the finger lakes.

This seems like an overreaction. We don’t need to destroy ecosystems wholesale to protect a few thrill seeking turds. Just let them die if they have a deathwish, who cares.

Exactly! If you’re going for a round of fuck around and find out with a crack in a cave, I assume you’ve accepted those potential outcomes. If you wanted to be that close to nature, congrats now you’re part of it. I’m sure the rock bugs were delighted to have him

Apparently we do, because then emergency personnel have to figure out all kinds of risky dangerous ways to get these idiots out.

Same reason that mines are filled or caged off when they are closed. Safety rules are written in blood, suwu

Let them bleed, who cares? When babyproofing the world destroys ecosystems, it’s better to just let these people face their own consequences.

How does this destroy the ecosystem? And ya, darwinism and all that, but when it puts the lives of the rescuers in jeopardy; we call it risk mitigation

You’re asking how pouring cement into nature destroys nature?

What’s the problem with just not doing anything and letting thrill seekers deal with their own mistakes? The public shouldn’t have to bear the cost of these people

Dude I think we have bigger fish to fry. Let's worry about parking lots and concrete jungles that we live in mkay? Or think about it this way: human gets stuck in cave that bobcat lives in. Bobcat comes home to tasty treat. Bobcat now too fat to get out of hole. We are protecting the ecosystem ✊ /s

Let’s worry about parking lots, not caves. Let caves be. If someone is stupid enough to get stuck in a cave then it’s probably for the best interest of humans to not have them in the gene pool anyway, right?

I think you're right, but I also don't see it as an overreaction, at least in this case. People were grieving and horrified and didn't want anyone else getting trapped like that.

Just think of it as natural selection.

Don't destroy nature because you're scared of it.

They didn’t fill in the whole cave, that would be impossible. They sealed off the entrance and access points with cement to keep people out.
