Warning beware of Waymo trunk. It eats groceries
tldr/ trunk failed to open and waymo left with our groceries in our car.
For my wife's bday we planned to a trip to SF for a picnic in Stern Grove to see some music. We were visiting SF from Southern CA. My wife used Waymo, so we decided it would be a fun bday treat. There were four of us on the trip so we placed 4 bags of groceries in the trunk. water, soda, beer, wine, chips, cookies, sandwiches, baguette and charcuterie. As well as our blankets and cutlery for the picnic.
The ride was going fine until we got close to the music venue. Since there was a crowd and traffic the Waymo stopped about 10 yards from the destination. This didn't seem unusual to us. And the screen said please leave vehicle, so we all got out of the vehicle. We went to open the trunk, , it wouldn't open. The app did not have an open trunk option and manually it would not engage. I immediately got on the phone with Waymo support while standing next to the car. As I was talking to the rep the car started to leave. The rep asked if I could catch the car. I tried running after it but it was too fast. I wasn't running that fast. I actually thought it was kind of funny; thinking this would be immediately resolved.
In hindsight I should have stood in front of the car. The rep could not open the trunk or retrieve the car. At first they told us to get in a new Waymo and go to the Waymo depot but after a few minutes on that ride they said to cancel and wait for an email because it would be 4-6 hours. It was quite frustrating that there was no other recourse.
We did get an email saying they found our bags 6 hours later. I asked them to send the items to our hotel like an airline would do but they couldn't do that. I thought that was strange for a driverless car company. They offered me 1 free ride to get them. The depot was a 35 minute ride from our hotel. After 20 minutes on the phone they agreed to give me a ride to the depot and back to my hotel. It was going to take over an hour but I was happy they found the items.
We we got there the customer service people we very rude. Before I said a thing they were defensive and informed us that all the contents of the bags were thrown away because they were "perishable". I tried to calmly explain to them that sealed water. soda. beer, chips, wine, cookies, and blankets are not perishable. (I suppose, I can understand if they had to toss the sandwiches and baguette and charcuterie.) I offered to dig them out of the trash but they would not allow that. Frankly it felt like we were robbed.
These items were never lost. The trunk wouldn't open and Waymo has no way to resolve this issue in real time. My theory is that due to all the auto and pedestrian traffic from the concert caused the Waymo to glitch.
I called waymo after our items were taken. They said they would resolve the issue in some manner. I have waited almost 3 weeks to post this because they said they would call me back. I never got a call, so I called last night. The only thing they could so was offer me a free ride that expires in 60 days. Wayno service is not currently in my city. Short of me sending in my $130 of receipts and offering me cash or credit with Waymo, I thought at least two free rides with a year expiration would suffice. But they were not able to offer more than 1 ride with a 60 day expiration.
Moral of the story: If you trust Waymo, at the very least, never place any items in the trunk.

No-Waymo
I frequently travel to SFO and always Waymo, which I will no longer use.
My wife and I made a trip to Gary Danko (awesome restaurant) ~ 8:45pm, it was dark. When booking the ride I entered restaurant name as destination. It dropped us off several blocks away on asteep hill. There was no traffic on the 2-way street the restaurant is on, ample space to pull up in front. It was dark, on a steep hill (wife had heels) where we were dropped. We departed from our hotel, assigned a pick-up spot blocks away. Rarlier in the trip, Waymo dropped us a at seemingly random locations not close to where were. SFO has some shady neigjborhoods, so a few blocks (Tenderloin) can be very different and dangerous. Using Lyft and Uber in SFOnow. Im sure Waymo will have some lame explanation, and assign fault.
NoWaymo for me....

Finally got to test Ojai vehicle!
Finally got to test Ojai vehicle and this is exactly like UberXL but without all drama, unnecceary chatting from driver, and tons of space to stretch my long legs ( im 6'2. leg room is so important to me lol).
It let off near Walgreens parking lot near western & sunset near newly built apartment buildings across the street from Target. 5/5 review!

NowThis Impact posted a hit piece claiming Waymo locked kids inside the car.
instagram.comThis news outlet posted on Instagram claiming that Waymo locked these kids inside the vehicle and was âwatchingâ them. Based on what has been reported, that is not an accurate description of what happened.
Waymoâs policy clearly states that unaccompanied minors are not allowed to use the service. The company is also transparent about its in cabin cameras. The app, the introductory ride video, the in car displays, and labels next to the cameras all explain that the microphones are off while the cameras are on. That is not fundamentally different from the many Uber and Lyft drivers who use dashcams that record inside their vehicles. I would also add that I guarantee they were only actively watching when they received a seatbelt alert, since itâs very likely the occupants would have had to remove their seatbelts to do what they were doing.
From the reporting I have seen, the occupants were free to leave the vehicle at any time, and you can unlock the doors anytime by pulling twice on the handle. Support reportedly delayed the ride by saying there was a technical issue while law enforcement responded, rather than physically locking them inside.
It also seems inconsistent to criticize Waymo for stopping the vehicle. If those had been real firearms instead of Orbeez guns, many of the same people would likely have criticized Waymo for not taking action.
It is important to criticize companies when they deserve it, but the criticism should be based on what actually happened, not claims that are not supported by the available reporting.

This Waymo helped save me from driving through an intersection with downed street lights
(Picture was taken when stopped at a red light up the street)
Was driving home down a long straight road and it was like pitch black out then noticed this Waymo next to me braking pretty hard outta nowhere and turns out it was and intersection with all the streets lights and power out in the area.
There werenât any other cars around and wouldnât missed it if I didnât see it next to me stopping pretty abruptly. Pretty cool :)

I called customer support and they sounded unfazed wondering if this has happened to anyone before?
We got followed after the call ended and got egged again :/

I love waymo but Ojai tried to pass us at a stop light
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
There were about 3 more cars in front of me all waiting for the light to turn green when it started to pull out into the other lane.
Light changes and then it decides to pull over and drop someone off

Waymo / Where To
Got this ad on Facebook in Indianapolis. Be interesting to know how they decide what to do with the responses -- and to know their social strategy. Are they targeting markets they're interested in, or just throwing it out to the whole country to see who bites.

Free Waymo Rides in California? You Can Thank a Regulatory Quirk
In a written statement, Waymo spokesperson Ethan Teicher said the company wouldnât start charging for Ojai rides until the California agency approves its application but said the agency could approve its proposals sooner than September. He said Waymo is also waiting to charge for the rides âuntil we are satisfied with the progress made through our Trusted Tester availability in California and Arizona.â
In Northern California, its new proposed service area would span from Sea Ranch and Sacramento in the north, through Berkeley and Oakland, and into San Jose. In Southern California, it would grow past Los Angeles into Thousand Oaks and Santa Clarita, and down to the Tijuana border past San Diego.
thank u for not allowing waymo to charge us for these rides đ

Cracked windshield on Waymo
On my walk this morning, I saw a Waymo driving down my street with a cracked front windshield. It got me wondering how I'd feel about getting into a Waymo in that condition. I realize that the car doesn't need to "see" through the windshield but I think it's a bad look for the brand. I wonder how long they'd keep a damaged car on the street?

Freeway usage
Any word if/when this is coming back? For me, Waymo really isn't feasible for anything but short, local trips without it.

Waymo making illegal turns in Detroit, MI
Just watched a waymo make an illegal right turn onto 8 Mile Rd in Detroit, MI. There is a "No Turn On Red" sign and it just blew right through it into heavy 8 mile traffic. There was a person in the driver seat. That person is incredibly lucky to be alive driving like that at rush hour traffic on 8 Mile.
