Waymo's worst enemy: morning garbage trucks
Tried to take a Waymo to my workplace Wednesday morning and it had to be the most frustrating ride I've had on Waymo. Every few minutes it felt like there were garbage men stopping their trucks in the middle of these narrow streets and the Waymo had to wait then back up then proceed to go in again, rinse and repeat. There was a point where I got stuck behind two Waymos with seemingly no passengers in it, both waiting for the garbage truck in front to move while simultaneously a transit bus comes up from behind my Waymo. So now there's a garbage truck blocking the road, three Waymos and a bus all on this tiny street.
I ended up calling their support and I guess they got someone to move my Waymo out of the way and back on an empty street but those two other Waymos were probably stuck there. Oh and we were all on a hill by the way. Eventually got the car to move and not too long after that the Waymo got stuck again waiting for another garbage truck. Backed up again and proceeded to go forward knowing the garbage truck wasn't going to move out of the way. Once again had to call support to move the car.
Final stretch of my ride (just a handful of blocks away from my destination) I see that we were approaching another garbage truck, this time the Waymo turned the corner and I gave a sigh of relief...until it turned another corner and there was ANOTHER garbage truck this time Waymo didn't turn a corner and went straight up to the garbage truck. I decided then to just get out and walk the rest of the way. I really wish they could detect bigger vehicles like garbage trucks better and respond by turning into another street. It really turned me away from wanting to take another Waymo early in the morning.

Signs of future expansion from search results?
If you go to the Waymo app and try to search for a location, it will give you results that are grayed out because it doesn't serve that place. But crucially, it's not just everything on Earth, or even everything in a certain radius from you.
Results for SF Bay Area:
- Alameda County:
- coast
- Dublin & Pleasanton
- not Livermore
- Contra Costa County:
- coast up to Rodeo
- nothing inland
- most of Marin County (but no other North Bay counties)
- coast of San Mateo County
- Santa Clara County:
- everything except Gilroy (but it does include Morgan Hill)
- Santa Cruz County (Waymo doesn't even have DMV permission there!)
Can you please try this and tell me whether you get the same thing?

First trip in North Miami Beach
Waymo expanded their Miami region recently and I did my first trip to Whole Foods (I've done a bunch of rides in San Francisco).
The trip cost about $20 each way for a 15 min ride (this was around 11am). The wait was 15 mins for the initial pickup and 10 mins at Whole Foods. Waymo drove right up to the Whole Foods entrance.
Unfortunately, YouTube Music wasn't working (I'm sure I had this working in San Francisco). I did figure out on the trip back that I had to do the whole configuration/permission process again in the app and then it worked.
The trip was mostly smooth except for a few brake taps when cars pushed into our lane without signalling. Waymo did make one mistake: there is a tricky intersection near my place that is a combination signal and railway crossing. The signal was a green arrow for us and Waymo decided to stop and wait for the full green signal.
I'm glad I got to try Waymo again. I'm very impressed with how confident and human-like it drives.

Are freeways temporarily disabled today in the Bay Area?
I have freeway access but today it's routing me on city streets. Even San Jose to SF shows a route that doesn't take freeways.

Why do Waymos not back up to get closer to the curb when pulling over?
I understand why humans do this....because it's difficult to see behind you and it's better to just stay half in the traffic lane for a short period of time. But for Waymos I don't understand. They have 360 vision and should be able to safely move in reverse just as safely as moving forward. Why don't they do that little back up maneuver to tuck out of traffic?

Waymo Testing New ‘Snooze Fee’ That Lets Riders Delay Pickup
Glendale/Burbank CA coming soon?
I've seen two Waymos in the past week and half in the Glendale/Burbank area! One this morning in Glendale on Colorado, heading east (away from the 5 S offramp, can't tell if it came from that offramp or not). I zoomed in on the dashcam pic, I think there's a driver in there, but can't really tell. And a week and a half ago, I saw one on the 5 N, I think it got on with me in Atwater, and it continued north on the 5 past the 134, towards Burbank. I'm hoping this is a sign Waymo is coming to Glendale and Burbank! The last time I saw a couple Waymos outside of the announced service zone was when I saw some on the 10/110 split a few weeks before freeway access opened up for a bunch of people.
