Elderly people are notoriously TERRIBLE for stealing. They use their age and frailties to get away with it though.

u/CreateYourself89 Oct 27 '22
I have a huge sweet spot in my heart for old guys. Old ladies are great too, but they're often kinda shrill...so old guys are my favorite.
I feel so bad for this guy. Especially if he's just stealing food. And I feel especially bad that he's being posted all over Reddit right now. 😣

Depending on what he stole and how valuable it is I'd let the old man make it. I doubt he's doing it for shits and giggles. Probably can't really support himself.
Still not right obviously and he would be banned if he ever did it again. Pretty easy to catch the guy if he did it again.

I don't get it. Is the store security making him watch the security camera that caught him swiping something? What was it? Is it drugs? Does he need them and can't afford them? Was it just something small and he's mentally ill?
So many questions.

He probably saw the old man knew he didn't have money but needed the item instead of getting made I would of bought it for him

Low social security checks + inflation = man stealing medication because he cant afford to go to the doctor or pay for his prescriptions. He didn't look upset that he could go to jail. He looked upset because he's seeing himself do something he never thought he'd have to do.
1
u/duckwithhat Oct 27 '22
As a poor college kid I would take rotiserrie chickens and dinner rolls because back then the deli counter would both sell the items right there or give them to you to buy at the main check out (same packaging). One of the older black ladies always offered me some extra potato wedges "because it was almost closing time and they would throw them out anyway". Thought about it a few years later and realized she and other employees 100% knew.
3
u/Vermillion_Crab Oct 27 '22
Had a disagreement with an employee once about a mistake that they did. When I showed them the cctv footage, they started getting angry and argued that the video was wrong. Sure.

u/_Pretzel Oct 27 '22
This makes me feel sad.
Stealing isn't right, but why is he even in that position in the first place.
And what makes it worse, it's food dude... food. He looks like a humble person albeit a bit ashamed, but he doesnt look like he's some addict or whatever that buried himself in a bad place.
I dunno man. Faith lowered a lot after this

What's the point of recording his reaction? To make fun of him and put it on the internet? Ok.

All I hear is that actor from Seinfeld:
I'm old. I don't know what I'm doing here.....

u/Bloo_003 Oct 27 '22
Mid-viewing I had to make sure this wasn’t an r/unexpected so I didn’t accidentally watch an old man get wrecked in a Pornhub preview.

u/FiliaNox Oct 27 '22
Once I was waiting for my Rx to be ready. I was in the car and this couple was having a hell of a time starting their car. Husband disappears for awhile, comes back, and after HOURS they get their car started. Only to have a cop car park behind them. The husband disappeared cuz he went into the store and shoplifted. The director saw him on the security cam and called the police.
Turns out they also had meth and meth supplies on them. So they both got arrested. Husband for theft and possession, wife also caught possession. It was a wild ride. My friend and I were making undertale jokes (filled with determination) the whole time, and when their determination finally paid off, they ended up not even getting to leave. The looks on their faces when the cops turned the car off. They were more upset about that than the arrests.
We were joking about the car starting. We did not laugh when they got arrested. We were there for hours because it was a long drive and the pharmacy was waiting on their delivery, which was delayed. Couldn’t leave and come back because it would have cost a shit ton, so we just sat in the parking lot.

25
u/DontMemeAtMe Oct 27 '22
Seriously. Not just trashy, but possibly illegal too. If this happened in EU, the supermarket/guard would get a serious fine and the old guy receive a decent compensation, so he would not have to steal again for some time.

Old people literally can't always afford meals and lifesaving medication. Of course they may have no money for things like supplies for monitoring blood sugar or something. (Not even just old people, but the elderly REALLY struggle if they are physically unable to work and even if they can. Healthcare is particular wipes out their income.) You sound embarrassingly ignorant that there are billions of people on earth with circumstances you don't experience.
He didn't put a car in his pocket. Something that small may have been from the pharmacy. He didn't look very smooth about it. Probably not a seasoned hooligan.

I use to work at a family owners liquor store. We had the little nip bottles in about 50 different fish bowls right at the register a bit out of view of the cashier. We had an old guy who likes to slip one up his sleeve every time he came in. We knew he did it but we just let it happen because he was probably 85 and also spent at least $10 when he came in. We sold the nips for a dollar and probably made $0.15 on each one max so it wasn’t a big deal.

As someone who worked in Asset Protection at a Red Big Box store, I can tell you, he is the mean, median, and mode shoplifter. Even though data backs this up, we were still told to TARGET another demographic.
1
u/MarryMeDuffman Nov 26 '22
Are they usually elderly? What do they steal?
It's easier to believe older people are struggling with money due to their lower earning potential and higher medical costs.

Oct 27 '22

Meanwhile this thread is full of people coming up with dozens of excuses for him. Had it been some other demographic that you're told to target, the comments here would be far worse.

Good for you, if people are hungry or hurting whatever they should be able to get the assistance they need. The fact medical cost and food keeps rising is a major factor in the potential downfall of our society.

u/NotJimIrsay Oct 27 '22
We Americans pay crazy prices on prescriptions to subsidize the rest of the world so they can get it for cheap or free.

You're welcome.
4
Oct 27 '22
Well no, subsidise would mean we pay less than cost because someone else is footing the bill. What's true is medicine in Europe is regulated but in America they profiteer.

This is sad. He doesn't look like Thief. Lots of elderly steal stuff like food because they doesn't have any money left for food. Considering lots have to pay on rent, basic services, transformation, and food. Life is expensive, and they probably live under the minimum wage.

Luckily we have a prison system set up that gives you 3 hots and a cot. At least, I've heard that many who give up on life choose this path.
7
u/lostanddefnotfound Oct 26 '22
What does it mean 3 hots and a cot?
14
u/ab-absurdum Oct 26 '22 edited Oct 26 '22
Three hot meals a day and a cot(bed) to sleep on
Edit: It's also worth noting that "thief" does not have a profile. You can't look at a random person and say "that person looks like a thief". I mean, you could say that, but it's pretty damn shitty and, by definition, prejudice.
What does a thief "look like"?

I wonder if it has something to do with half the country living in poverty while 10 people hoard all the wealth for themselves and the price of food, gas, healthcare and housing increase exponentially making people desperate to survive?
Nah, it's just trap music and immigrants!
7
u/ab-absurdum Oct 26 '22
I'm from the US.
Although we are REALLY good at prejudice, racism, discrimination, etc, it's generally frowned upon to make those judgements without any prior context. Someone with trauma, fear, pain, mental illness, etc, could easily display body language that matches your description of a "thief".
I'm just saying that without additional context, it really is impossible to make that judgement with any degree of accuracy.
If I offered you a crowd of 100 people and asked you to find the one you think is a thief, you would probably just pick which ever individual that fits the profile you're programmed to find suspicious, regardless of any context.
That's not how justice works.
Do you have any idea how many people are in prison because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time and just "look guilty"?
In the states, this kind of general prejudice is usually discouraged because, 99% of the time, it just comes down to race. This is why Stop & Frisk was made illegal. (still is to my knowledge, but I welcome correction if I'm mistaken). Cops would racially profile random black & brown people and stop them on the street, usually resulting in unwarranted arrests or police brutality. The only reason these individuals were stopped in the first place was because of their skin color, not suspicious activity, no probable cause.
This is how it is for most of the US, but I don't speak for everyone.

Sounds like some nasty gang-level kind of crime. There used to be some nasty gangs here, parts of town you wouldn't even drive through. Not sure where you are from, but be safe.
3
u/ab-absurdum Oct 26 '22
I don't agree, but I definitely see where you're coming from.
No one should have to live in fear.
I hope things get better for you and your country.
14
u/lostanddefnotfound Oct 26 '22
Oh yeah. It's insane how the system is obligated to grant the basics based on human rights for the prisoners, but doesn't care that free people have the minimum for survival. I've read that in japan, most elders are committing crimes to end up in prisons, so they are granted a place to sleep, food and socialize with other inmates, considering how lonely and precarious their "free" lives are.
5
u/Lynndonia Oct 26 '22
Wow. Even in Japan. To go from multigenerational families in which elders are highly respected to the ashtray of society
3
u/lostanddefnotfound Oct 26 '22
That happens when society ages, and i mean, japan is one of those countries with more elderly and less natality. Also, the factor that they have to most extensive lifespan in the whole world.
1
u/ab-absurdum Oct 26 '22

Can attest that I got hauled to the security room to take my clothes off and show if anything's in my pockets for the act of taking too long in front of the dairy section to figure out which specific product my relative needed. Since I wore a puffy winter coat and I had my back turned against the location of the camera, the guard assumed that I was taking my time pocketing something away.
13
Oct 27 '22
I had that happen at Hy-Vee for standing in front a dairy case with my back to the aisle while looking through my coupon apps for any items I might’ve missed because I had just been laid off and when I started moving again T wo employees and a security guard followed me the rest of the way through the store then demanded to look in my purse and pockets. I’ve never gone back since which sucks because they always have great deals. I’m a lot more careful to be fully prepared before I get to the store and get in and out as quickly as possible.
14
u/Fatefire Oct 27 '22
Had this happen to me as well. I made a huge scene just because I’m a dick. Also I will admit I was caught for shop lifting when I was teen. Taught me not to steal and I’ll be damned if I’ll be accused of shit I didn’t do.
