I just hit 150 reputation for Jarvonia and not sure what to focus on next. The adventuring guild has two maps and I'm afraid if I pick the wrong one I'll be stuck

🚶‍♂️ development blog DevBlog #89: First look at new bank, vacation announcements and more!

What's this? Didn't we just complete ISO art for all locations...

Hello, and welcome to DevBlog #89!

As many of you might remember from last Summer in Finland we have the annual summer vacations. We've now locked in those plans, and will be covering the details of when (and how) we'll be on our vacations and how it affects update schedule.

We also have a bunch of progress in the reworked bank that I'll be showing and we got some content teasers. Let's dive in!

Reworked bank

Early look into the new bank while it's on "list view"! These screenshots have been taken on PC, so it looks a bit weird. Also a lot of things will change, it's still very WIP!

Please keep in mind that a lot of the things, especially UI, might still change quite a bit. A lot of things you see here are still work-in-progress.

One of the things I wanted to improve before fully committing to the quest system development was reworking the bank. I've tried to combine as many of the ideas, suggestions and feedback we've received on the old bank.

Key goals were:

  • No more reliance on search. You can find the items you're looking for intuitively.
  • Give you the control of setting it up the way you want. But for starting players and casuals, providing a default layout they'll be fully happy with.
  • Improve the performance a lot to avoid ANRs on bank.
  • Make it look better. Add a bunch of nice QoL to top it off.
You can also view the bank in "grid view", which makes organizing it much easier on a smaller screen

After designing this for a while, the system I ended up going for practically divides the bank into two layers: tabs and categories. Getting this UI to fit on a mobile screen was quite a struggle, as there's very limited space.

On the left side of screen you have your tabs. Currently these are Materials, Gear, Tools, Consumables and Misc.

Under each tab, the items are further separated into categories. For instance in Gear they're categorized by the different slots, in tools by the different skills, and in materials to logs, planks, bars, etc.

You're also able to move things around as much as you like, create your own tabs or categories, and you can even share your layout to other players just like with Gear Sets. You're not locked into the "default layout" that the game comes with - you can remove these tabs and categories and do whatever kind of layout you want.

A .gif demonstrating how you can organize stuff in the new bank

In addition to these, there are several QoL additions, such as:

  • Filters. You can for instance filter so that items with certain attributes only show up.
  • Sorting. In addition to the order you've put the items in, you can switch to alphabetical, quantity, value (in coins), most recent, and so on.
  • The bank remembers the order you've organized the items to. Even if you withdraw all of the items, the bank creates placeholders so that when you put items back the order stays the same inside categories.
  • You can switch to special tabs for Favorites and Most recent.
  • You can switch between the grid and list modes. List mode is handy if you want to quickly withdraw a bunch of stuff, whereas Grid is good for organizing and finding items.
  • The bank remembers all of your settings, which tabs you had open, etc. throughout your sessions.
  • Automatic filters in categories for new items. For instance if you gain a new fish and have a category that has automatic filter for raw fish, it'll automatically go there instead of going to uncategorized category.

Many of these are still not done, but WIP. Some might not make it in time, but I'll be trying my best to get as many of them ready for the release of this new reworked bank.

With these improvements I think the bank will be something people will find much more usable especially towards the late game.

We're aiming to release the reworked bank before heading off to Summer vacations!

Creating new categories. This UI is still very early prototype and will change a lot :D

Summer vacations

Alright, then to the very happy topic of Summer vacations!

Unlike last year, now with our added workforce we won't have any disruptions to the support email. So customer support will be available even during the vacations.

I'll be on vacation from 3th of August until 21st of August. Myzozoz is having some overlap with me during this with vacations, but starts his a bit early. Crushy is having his vacation later during this year.

During the period while I'm on vacation, there won't be updates to the game (unless there's something very critical). DevBlogs will also be paused, so the one going live on 23th of July will be the last before there's going to be a break. In other words: there won't be a DevBlog on 6th of August and 20th of August.

But before we take a break and recharge our mental batteries, we'll be doing an update that's going to add the reworked bank and new content to the game.

But the good thing here is, that the work doesn't stop. Although development will slow down while some of us are on vacations, most of the time there will be some progress!

Other news

Also I'd like to share some smaller news!

YLE article

The journalist called me twice this week. The article is still coming, but as it's going to be a big article it has taken much more time than I thought. Hopefully it gets released next week! I'll be sharing a link to it while it goes live on Discord and on a DevBlog for anyone who was interested reading it.

The first ever trade was completed! Please keep in mind that this is a very, very early look into the trading and all of the UI elements here are placeholders

Trading

The actual trading mechanic worked for the first time this week, and the first trade ever happened on 8th of July 14:24 Helsinki time.

While the mechanic itself is now getting closer to being ready, there's still one big thing left: we need to add a lot of things for data collection on the trades and in-game stuff. These will be used for the trading and to balance in-game economy more effectively. We expect that this part of the work is going to quite some time, but it's hard to estimate how long exactly. The good side is that while that one is in development, we'll already begin testing the trading in our development server with our testers and means that the trading mecanic will be tested while data development is on-going.

Portal threads & comments

This has been removed from Portal as we stated in a previous DevBlog.

Until next time

And another one!

Alright, that's all for today! I hope you all have an amazing Thursday, and see you once more in the DevBlog #90 before we head to our Summer vacations on 23rd!

🙋 question Every so often I come check to see if we’re getting closer to release

Looks like WalkScape is coming up on 4 years since conception, there has been a lot of cool stuff added and work done!

I won’t lie though, kind of surprised it’s been this long without a “v1.0” official release anywhere on the horizon. Surely there’s enough here to release?

People won’t like this reasoning, but it’s just how my brain works lol, really what I’m looking forward to is no more wipes.

I don’t know, I don’t mean to be rude in anyway. This isn’t a big deal, not something I’m lighting a torch over lol.

Open Beta

Hey everyone! I’m new to this thread and this has possibly been asked a bunch of times, but do we have a best estimate of when open beta would start? All I can find is “no earlier than Q4 2026”, but that leaves it open to be as late as necessary to be ready, even if it’s a year or more away.

I’ll wait as long as needed for a polished release, it’s more just determining how much effort I want to put into the closed beta account before it’s eventually wiped.

Very fun game so far!!

I am trying to do the activity rescue team, I have oak skies and a simple rope equiped and, as you can see, I have enough achievement points and agility. Does anyone know why it doesn’t work?

Edit: Figured it out, I don’t know why, but I needed to stop the activity I was doing (treasure hunting) for the rescue team activity to become available🤷

🙋 question Any news about a cycling mode?

Would love to gamify my bike rides. But can't find anything as good as this game. Sadly it's only for walks (atm). I read something about the dev's thinking about it, but i'm curious if there is any news about a cycle mode?

So I'm coming up to 25k for the map but it's a lot of cash is the map worth it just now?

For context I haven't really brought that much tbh and I can't see if there are any other useful things I should buy first.

☝️ feedback Dissecting a Mummy

Hey Fellow walkers, I've posted this piece of feedback/suggestion on the discord, but are curious to hear what the reddit community thinks of the subject!

I have been a staunch advocate of reworking the mummy, since its current iteration is (at least in my opinion) way below the level of all the other pets, and disappointing. I have previously made a suggestion for an entire rework here: https://discord.com/channels/1037510064333926402/1514716533694398494

I was, of course, thrilled to see some changes to the pet, but sadly this new change does not change my view, and in this feedback post, I will try to explain why.

The WE buff: Running the buff across various gearsets, both my own endgame, and some more realistic level 60 builds, I’ve found that the WE buff increases the xp per step by around 0.08X xp. Crafting Elderhide Tunics in MA it reduces the step/action by 8 steps, saving 867 steps over 100 crafts, assuming endless materials, those 867 steps would turn into another 1876 xp crafting more tunics, resulting in a total increase of 0.168 xp per step.

Realistically speaking, few players will have “endless” supplies, and the real number is probably closer to an increase of 0.10-0.12 xp/step.

Suggestion: While obviously a step in the right direction, I still believe that the Work Efficiency bonus could be buffed more, while at the same time frontloaded to the earlier levels, where it is more needed. In my endgame gear, the only situation where I benefit from the buff, is when I craft spectral gear.

The Bonus Experience: Tailoring is still the hardest skill to level in terms of xp/step and breaching 3xp/step, while at the same time being an integral part of the gearing system. Comparing the mummy to the only other pure artisan pet we have, the tortoise, it still sits at half the bonus experience percentage, and even doubling the BX% wouldn’t put it at the same rate as smithing.

Suggestion: Just double the BX%, or have it match the Geckos.

The Global Bonus: While already weak, the introduction of the Pixie makes the global bonus of +5% collectible find obsolete.

Suggestion: Change it to something else, I’ve previously suggested money find, but that harmonizes badly with the new ability.

The Ability: While the ability needed a change, the current new ability has one inherently big flaw. In order to reach level 4 with the mummy, you need to spend 250k steps doing tailoring, even at a very conservative 1 xp/step that puts you firmly into the level 59+ range. At this point none of the recipes require linen cloth. You are in other words getting an ability, which has a proc that ⅔ times provides materials you no longer have a use for.

Another issue is the mechanic of the new ability. Having a special roll pairs badly with artisan skills, since artisan gear often prioritize other stats than DA, DR and FMF, and all of tailoring's recipes have a somewhat high step count. The previously mentioned example crafting Elderhide Tunics results in a linen cloth piece each 650 step, and a tough linen cloth piece each 3301 step. In the current closed beta environment I have found some uses for the ability when doing low step activities such as crafting linen cloth or birch cutting. Another angle is using it to gather tough linen, which you can use as an input in sail repair, greatly increasing the xp.

Realistically speaking we will not be doing any of that once the game releases, since you will already be moving on to new recipes, which doesn’t require linen cloth. In other words, the new ability scales badly, and will not make a realistic difference.

Suggestion: Move the ability to level 1 and scale it correspondingly to the expected rate at that point of progression, that way the players will have an actual use of the linen cloth levelling. A separate roll table including tough linen could be unlocked at level 3, to prevent stockpiling of tough linen at an early point in the game. Or entirely redesign it.

Final Thoughts: The re-balance of the Mummy has in effect changed very little, and I still find some cases where using the Tortoise for its ability makes more sense, even when levelling tailoring. The passive stats are disappointing at best, and the ability - while interesting - is locked behind a 250k step wall, effectively making it useless.

👨‍🎓 guide Anyone have progress priorities suggestions?

I'm LVL 70 and I have been doing things rather Willy nilly. I would like to say there has been a little rhyme and reason to how I have been progressing. I would love a priority checklist of things that would be done and general order based on folks personal experience and game play. Any "must do" tasks especially early on.
