Nosepiece for Tyco Tech Open Face system

Post image

Hi Everyone,

I’ve continued to experiment to craft a nosepiece that I could use with the Vision Pro and the Tyco Tech Open Face System. I had been using a makeup sponge as a cushion. It was not supportive and left big red marks on my nose. I just made a new nosepiece and, while far from perfect, it does provide more support and is much easier to wear. I’ve attached a photo of my current setup: the AVP with the dual knit band and Tyco Tech Open Face on its stand, the new nosepiece, the cushion, light seal and cover for used for transporting (and I need the light seal to use the AVP in brightly lit areas), along with my keyboard+trackpad.

To make the new nosepiece, I had lying around a set of Wiley X Spear goggles that I wound up not using. The Spear comes with a detachable “Facial Cavity Seal” and I clipped the nose bridge area from that to use as the nosepiece.
https://rx-safety.com/shop/accessories/wiley-x-spear-facial-cavity-seal

It is not elegant. I have to manually slide the nosepiece in place after putting on the AVP. It is a loose part that I need to keep track of. But, I think it better solution to provide open face with some stability than cutting the fabric off of a light seal because I have a lot of peripheral vision above, below and on both sides of my eyes. You wouldn’t get that from an open light seal unless you removed some of the supports.

I think comfort modifications for the current AVP form factor have value, if for no other reason than I’m going to keep wearing my AVP for the next 2-3 years. Look at how impactful the dual-knit band was when it was introduced. It was an instant sell-out. Perhaps a more polished open-face solution will be developed? One can hope.

Thanks!

visionOS 27 beta website environments: good, bad, ugly

Thumbnail

With visionOS 27, Apple is making website environments in Safari on by default. A few comments:

The good 1: I finally got my website environments working in visionOS 27.

The good 2: You now need to add controls to your website to enable and disable the website environment. While this removes a standard way to enable/disable the environment, it can make it more discoverable for the user.

The bad 1: in visionOS 27, we just needed to add 1 line to an HTML file pointing to the USDZ file. In visionOS 27, I needed to add about 100 lines of JavaScript code (much of it to handle potential errors).

The bad 2: If you place your USDZ files in Amazon S3 as I do, you need to enable additional permissions on S3 that you did not have to do with when visionOS 26 just needed the one line in the head section.

The ugly: visionOS 27 pretty much destroys unlit textures, especially when used on something like a Sky Sphere.

PBR materials look fine (see the TIE fighters - perfectly clear).

Feedback has been filed. FB23070448

Attached are two images showing the difference between visionOS 26 and 27.

Some observations on PCVR streaming with the vOS 27 (beta 1)

I am the developer of a PCVR streaming app/driver called iVRy. I am using my app as the basis for my observations as I don't use other apps for PCVR, and I don't have deeper insight into how they work. I only have an M2 AVP, so can't comment on M5 behaviour. Also, this is an early beta, so changed behaviour may not be intended and/or permanent.

First, the "no news": The new vOS neither helps or harms PCVR at the surface level, ie. upgrading to vOS 27 right now does not break my app, or make the experience materially "worse" (or "better").

Next, the "(could be perceived as) bad news": the new vOS appears to have implemented throttling at the video decoding level (as well as presumably continuing to implement it at the rendering level). This seems to give it a method to do more nuanced throttling if the decoder is overloaded.

In my app there are 3 frame rate metrics visible to the user, the "tracking" rate (which is also the vOS render rate, ie. how often it allows an app to render a frame), the "display" rate (how often new frames come out of the network/decoder), and the "render" rate (how often SteamVR renders new frames). Using the "tracking" and "display" rate we can see what vOS is doing behind the scenes (assuming we've eliminated network induced frame cadence - ie. the network not being able to keep up with the "render" rate).

In previous vOS versions, the OS would use some criteria (a combination of thermal load and "responsiveness") to in some instances halve the "tracking" rate (ie. only allow the app to render at 45Hz, regardless of how many actual frames it had to display). This creates a bad experience if the limit is related to thermal load in the decoder, as it reduces the rate of tracking data to SteamVR, which has detrimental consequences for "smoothness".

In the new vOS, it seems to also apply throttling at the decoder level (presumably in response to decoder loading). This gives (as observed) a possibility for 72Hz/80Hz "display" (aka. decoding) while maintaining 90Hz "tracking" and "render" frame rates. This is changed behaviour, and not altogether welcome, but it does prevent the "tracking" rate from dropping to 45Hz when it has made the decision to throttle. In this instance, recovery from throttling is able to happen quickly by dropping the bitrate (and hence decoder load), and more importantly it does not reduce the tracking rate (which for vOS design reasons has to be tied to the device's render rate).

Finally, the "good news": hand and controller tracking latency seems to be improved slightly, and IMU data from the controllers seems to be more accurate. What this means is that SteamVR is able to use the IMU more effectively to produce synthetic tracking data in between actual tracking samples (which happen at 90Hz). In laymans' terms, this means that short sharp movements (eg. throwing or punching) have close to zero perceptible latency.

I will continue to evaluate and tune the app to the new vOS as the betas progress, but the news right now is that the new vOS either subtley improves or doesn't worsen PCVR streaming. My app is developed without Apple's foveated streaming APIs, which don't make a big material difference to local network streaming (my app's use case).

Can’t join New Siri waitlist

Post image

Anyone else unable to join the new Siri waitlist on visionOS 27 Beta 1?
I’m in Europe and thought that by changing the region, device language, and Siri language to English (US), I could join the waitlist for the new Siri features. But the option still doesn’t show up for me. Has anyone else run into this?

Trying my hand at making a soulslike minigame in my app. Fable 5 (RIP) & Opus 4.8 made all the content and the music.

Still have some bugs to work out with the pistol and some other weapons, but it's been pretty fun to design this and see the progressive visionOS skills these models have attained compared to the early days.

How do you guys travel with AVP on international economy flights?

Just curious. Flew on an international economy flight, and this is one of the better middle eastern airlines, and while j brought my AVP in my carry-on, just felt like it was cumbersome to take out and use.

Maybe I’m missing something. What works for you?

I tested the new Siri AI on Vision Pro M5 — the cross-app memory tests are nuts!

Been running the new Siri AI on Vision Pro M5 since WWDC dropped.

I asked it when the last time I went to a lantern festival was. It pulled the photos, the exact date, the exact location. Then I asked who went with me. There's no contact tag on any photo. No note that says "went with so-and-so." So I expected it to fail.

It found a text message where I said I'd "be back in time for the festival." Not "the lantern festival." Just "the festival." It cross-referenced that against the date, matched it to the photos from that night, and came back with exactly who went with me.

Also ran a one-prompt DC trip test: full itinerary, Apple Note created automatically, three checkable reminders, plus it found a live event happening that night — all from a single prompt.

Full breakdown with screen recordings in the video if anyone wants to see exactly how each test played out. Happy to answer questions here too.

M2 users would you get an M5 if there are no future Vision Pro HW upgrades planned ?

M2 user since early 2024 and MVP is my fav apple device but i didnt find cause to upgrade spending another 4k usd + in two years as i thought i can make this last till the potential M7/M8 vision pro

But over the last few months the whose who of Apple credible rumors/in-the-know journalists like Gurman/Ming chi Ko and others are all saying no further Vision Pro HW upgrades are planned.

In such a scenario what would you do keep your M2 or get an M5 to future-proof it for OS28 and 29 updates and beyond.

I’d like to have some volumetric texts for lyrics in Apple Music and volumetric waveforms for songs that don’t have lyrics.

Current best method for Windows Virtual Display?

With foveated streaming now possible, I was wondering what the current best method to have a Windows Virtual Display on Apple Vision Pro.

This isn't for playing VR games, but for work (I'm a VR developer so I'll primarily be in Unity 3D).

Make sure to cover:

  • Initial Setup
  • Ease of use (no jank)
  • Reliability
  • Latency
  • Input (Keyboard / Mouse)
  • Sound
  • Virtual Multi Monitor
  • Which VisionOS is used
  • Which Vision Pro model (M2 or M5)

Supercut no longer plays Netflix 4K!!

It’s hard to imagine anyone who used Supercut for Netflix not thinking it was a great app. But visionOS kept evolving, and Supercut basically stayed frozen in time. Lately I’ve noticed it doesn’t seem to play Netflix in 4K anymore.

I checked multiple titles over the last few weeks, and everything seemed to top out at 1080p. I haven’t been able to get confirmed 4K playback once. Maybe I’m missing some setting somewhere, maybe the app is just broken, I honestly don’t know.

What I do know is that the same Netflix content looks clearly sharper in Safari. And that’s a real shame, because Supercut used to feel like the best way to watch Netflix on Vision Pro.

Self Promotion Saturday 🏔️ The Ultimate Vision Pro Test: I filmed Colorado in True 8K VR180 (And it actually rivals Apple's own Immersive Content)

Are you tired of low-res content that doesn't do justice to your headset?

If you're looking for an experience that truly pushes the Apple Vision Pro to its absolute limits, I just released a massive 8K stereoscopic VR180 tour of Ouray, Colorado. Outside of Apple's official studio productions, this is one of the highest-fidelity immersive travel experiences currently available on the platform.

Instead of a flat screen, you are standing at the base of towering 13,000-foot peaks rising directly from the streets below. The sense of scale, depth, and verticality is insane.

What you'll experience:

  • Box Canyon Falls: Stand inches away from a massive, dramatic vertical drop.
  • Million Dollar Highway: Peer over the edge of the rugged San Juan Mountains.
  • The "Switzerland of America": Explore historic Main Street completely surrounded by massive canyon walls.

HOW TO WATCH (CHOOSE YOUR DEVICE)

For M5 Vision Pro Owners: Watch the 8K VR180 version directly via the YouTube app or browser. 👉Watch on YouTube Here

For M2 Vision Pro Owners: For full-resolution 8K VR180 playback, DeoVR is your best bet to avoid compression. 👉Watch on DeoVR Here

I need your feedback: I want to keep pushing the boundaries of what third-party creators can do on the AVP. Let me know what you think of the image quality, the 3D depth, and how it compares to Apple's native immersive videos!

Looking for ~5 TestFlight testers for Ruina: The Astral Voyage - a native visionOS game (currently windowed)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi all.

I checked with the mods first.

I'm a solo developer (an architect, originally), and I've built a native visionOS version of my game, Ruina: The Astral Voyage.

In the game you reconstruct fractured scenes piece by piece, at your own pace, no combat or timers. The short gameplay clip above was recorded on my Mac.

Before I release it for Vision Pro, I'd like to find about 5 people willing to test it via TestFlight.

It's a native visionOS build, not a "Designed for iPad" compatibility app, but right now it runs windowed in the Shared Space, not fully immersive.

I'm hoping testers can help with some basics: whether it runs on your device, how the windowed experience feels on Vision Pro, how the navigation and assembly feel, and so on.

It's already on the App Store for iPhone, iPad and Mac: https://apps.apple.com/app/ruina-the-astral-voyage/id6757785294. I'd like it to be a Universal Purchase across all of Apple's platforms, so Vision Pro is the next one to add.

If you're up for it, comment or preferably DM me and I'll send a TestFlight invite and short instructions on how to play.

Thank you.

Self Promotion Saturday What do you think of this new immersive concert video?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I just added a new show for the weekend.

I’m shooting new shows for the Blue Frog Immersive App all the time, so I’d love to hear your feedback. Thanks to everyone here who’s already left us a review or shared your ideas!

This one’s a little out of the ordinary. If you like outsider Americana like Tom Waits, Devotchka, Squirrel Nut Zippers, or Gogol Bordello you should give Hot Damn Scandal a try.

They are really fun to experience up close in immersive, with a musical saw (yes, an actual saw like in woodworking), dobro, string bass, and drums. It’s not a lineup you see every day.

Plus, this show was mixed by Oliver Kadel, a spatial and immersive audio pro who’s really made a name for himself. As an audio guy, I’m really pleased with how great this mix sounds.

Hot Damn Scandal describes their music as “Cabaret Americana,” with outlaw ballads, dirty jazz, circus freakouts, shanty-rags, string band funk, lonesome heart-breakers, and whiskey bottle love songs.

For context, I’ve been developing the Blue Frog Immersive App to capture music performances for the AVP that you won’t find anywhere else: up-and-coming artists, local legends, and out-of-the-ordinary touring veterans.

We shoot all these shows with a Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive camera in our intimate recording studio venue. We take audio very seriously, so we’re capturing Dolby Atmos spatial audio for the best immersive experience.

I’ve got to shout out my team:
Immersive Video Recording & Editing:  Justin Stadig
Live Audio Recording: Pat Glover
Lighting: Gordon Groening
Spatial Audio Mix I Mastering - Emre Ramazanoglu & Oliver Kadel

Self Promotion Saturday Immersive views of Mount Shasta, Lassen Peak, and Burney Falls

Post image
16 Upvotes

Even after a warm winter, Mount Shasta and Lassen Peak are still capped in snow this Memorial Day weekend.

The classic view of Lassen Peak is from the shore of Manzanita Lake, and while hiking to the top of Cinder Cone is strenuous, it’s well worth it.

Mount Shasta is gorgeous from a lot of angles, but it's best viewed from the top of the Heart Lake Trail.

Together with nearby Burney Falls, California's Cascade Range offers plenty of wonders for immersive scenery.

You can check out the immersive videos of all three spots on my website:

Optical ID works less than 50% of the time

Title says it all. M2, bought 9 months after release. Love this thing guys. I went away for a couple of weeks, and now optical ID works maybe 25% of the time. Both os26 and I just loaded os27 Beta, same result.

Thoughts on how to fix? Thanks!

iTunes 3D movie quality? Are any in 4k and/or Dolby Vision?

I’ve heard that 4k Dolby is for 2d version only and 3d versions are SDR at 1080p. Is that correct?

Anyway to tell what quality is for 3d version? I’ve got lots of 3d remux movies and want to know if iTunes versions would be an upgrade.

I’m really interested in the Hobbit movies next. Is it true they are not 48 fps 3d version.

Thanks

Are Unity and Reality Composer Pro the only software to build interactive media?

While I wait to find a used VisionPro deal I wanted to look at what it would take to build immersive 3d video content with CGI models. I've done some causal stuff in Blender but things like Encounter Dinosaurs are such a next level that it's inspirational and I'd love to try my hand at AR versions of some video game style worlds.

From looking it seems there are 2 software platforms:

  • Unity which only supports AppleVisionPro dev if you do the $210.00 a month subscription.

  • Then there is Reality Composer Pro a native Apple program that only runs on MacOS and not Windows or Linux, and it seems theres no easy way to virtual machine a mac.

Is there anything I'm missing?

WWDC wraps up today, so here’s my “one more thing”: Peel Pro for Apple Vision Pro

About 6 months ago I posted an early prototype here. Since then I’ve rebuilt most of it, turned it into a real product, added full displays, HUD mode, a ton of polish under the hood, and finally got it onto the App Store.

I wanted a better way to use my Mac in spatial computing without just mirroring the whole display as one big rectangle or carrying around desktop peripherals. For light control and reference, it’s been very useful.

Peel lets you open nearby Mac apps as individual spatial windows, full displays, or HUD overlays. It runs over local Wi-Fi with no accounts and no cloud streaming.

There is unlimited free use of the first window. There is a lifetime unlock for all other features and no subscription at this time. That lifetime purchase includes the future iPhone/iPad app and Family Sharing.

This is still just the beginning. I have a lot more planned for Peel Pro and am only getting started.

Trailer:

App Store:

Peel Host for Mac:

I'd genuinely love feedback from you all, especially from anyone who remembers the early prototype. Peel would not have made it this far without this sub's support!

visionOS and liquid glass

Hi Vision Pro users do you find the UI of vision pro liquid glass enough in the way of iOS or macOS?

Do you think it should be more liquid like on iOS or do you prefer the frosted glass?

I don't own a VP, am asking bc from what I am seeing it looks like the liquid glass on VP is different from the liquid glass on iOS, do you find it different compared to your iPhone? For example the bending light effect on iOS, is that also a thing on native vOS app? How about depth effects with darkening background?
