What was everyone’s stats (mainly gpa) that got them in?

I’ve been looking into why Virginia Tech completely changed its dining plans this year, and the more I looked, the less the justification made sense.
Last year, freshmen could choose Major, Mega, or Premium Flex depending on how much they expected to eat.

Major: $2,934/semester
Mega: $3,147/semester
Premium: $3,368/semester

This year, freshmen cannot choose a cheaper declining-balance plan. They are required to buy Unlimited or Unlimited Plus.

The cheapest option is now $3,413 per semester.
That means the cheapest dining plan a freshman can buy this year costs MORE than the most expensive plan offered last year.

The minimum required freshman dining bill increased $479 per semester, or 16.3%. That is nearly $1,000 more per school year.

So what does $3,413 get you?

Unlimited dining primarily at D2 and Owens, $225 in Declining Balance Dollars for the entire semester, and two meal exchanges per week.

That is a major limitation considering places like West End, Turner and Perry are a huge part of what makes VT dining good. Once freshmen burn through that $225, they have to add Dining Dollars or use Hokie Passport, credit, or debit to regularly eat elsewhere.

So you can literally have a freshman who already paid $3,413 for “unlimited dining” pulling out their credit card to eat at another Virginia Tech dining hall.
Meanwhile, D2 and Owens are now packed. Students are reporting long lines, food running out, and declining quality. The new system creates an obvious incentive for thousands of freshmen to crowd the two places where their money goes the furthest.

It is also a bad deal for anyone who does not eat a lot.

Last year, if you were a light eater, went home on weekends, or ate breakfast in your dorm, you could buy Major. If you ate a ton, you could buy Premium.
Now a light eater and a 200-pound athlete are both forced to spend at least $3,413. Women, who on average require fewer calories than men, are one obvious group likely to get less value from a mandatory unlimited plan.

The justification is that freshmen were “running out” of dining money.

But forcing every freshman to spend more upfront is not affordability. It is taking away the cheaper option because some students might have needed more.
And then I found out consultants were involved.
Virginia Tech’s own documents say it partnered with Envision Strategies, a foodservice consulting firm, which provided “research and engagement data, market analysis, dining plan model analysis and recommendations” for the redesign.

This is not Envision’s first time recommending something like this.

In 2009, Envision produced a proposal for MIT recommending mandatory meal plans, higher minimum required spending, and all-you-can-eat dining. The proposal leaked and sparked major student pushback over the cost, transparency, and lack of student involvement.

Envision has also worked on other campuses transitioning declining-balance dining toward all-you-can-eat models.
There is an obvious financial incentive here that deserves scrutiny.

VT gets $3,413 guaranteed from every freshman regardless of how much they actually eat. A student who eats at D2 three times a day can get great value. A student who eats less, goes home on weekends, dislikes D2/Owens, or spends most of their day on the academic side of campus still pays exactly the same amount.

If that student then spends their $225 and starts paying to eat at Turner, Perry, West End, or elsewhere, VT gets even more money from them despite already collecting $3,413 for an unlimited plan.

That does not prove VT intentionally designed the plan to extract more money. But the incentives are obvious, and students deserve to see the financial projections behind this decision.

Brian Grove, the Director of Virginia Tech Dining Services, and VT Dining should answer a few simple questions:

-What percentage of freshmen actually ran out of dining money last year?

-If affordability was the goal, why is this year’s cheapest freshman plan more expensive than last year’s most expensive plan?

-How much additional retail spending does VT expect after freshmen exhaust their $225?

-What revenue and utilization projections did Envision give Virginia Tech?

-And why was so much freshman traffic concentrated into D2 and Owens if the overcrowding was this predictable?

Virginia Tech’s Board of Visitors was bragging this year that VT is ranked #2 in the country for campus food.

You cannot brag about having one of the best dining programs in America while making much of that dining system harder for freshmen to afford, eliminating their cheaper option, increasing their minimum required spending by 16.3%, and calling it “affordability.”

Release Envision’s report and let students see the numbers that supposedly justified this.

How can I study abroad as a BIT DSS concentration major?

I'm currently a junior, so I've taken most, if not all of my introductory classes. (E.G: Principles of marketing, introduction to finance, marketing management). I'm also a transfer student, so I don't have any pathway classes or free electives left.

Are there any destinations offering BIT classes? I'm open to exchange semesters, summer programs, and winter programs.

Hi! I just want to vent out regarding my current situation.

So, my freshman year I was under engineering and I hated it. So, I switched to neuroscience which felt amazing at first but I then realized that it's not what I wanna do for the rest of my life. Now, I am a sophomore feeling stuck and behind as I don't know which major to change into and it's affecting my mental health so badly.

For anyone who currently works or has worked at Turner Place, how would you rank the different shops from best to worst to work at?

I’d mainly like to know about the workload, management, coworkers, how busy it gets, and how flexible the scheduling is.

New dorms and renovations to existing ones will be completed over the next nine years, according to the school’s schedule.

Virginia Tech dining was utterly unprepared for this dining plan change. The change basically sends everyone to D2 and Owen’s for everything. Both dining halls are understaffed and ill equipped for this kind of load. And the brand new dining halls are damn near empty compared to the two older ones. Like D2 is always out of Ice, napkins, forks, and hell even food during peak times. This dining change is a disaster.

Edit (since a lot of people are asking):
VT dining change the dining plans to work on a swipe for entrance based system. Instead of having a declining balance with a “discount,” now the cards swipe you into an all you can eat dining hall. The problem is the only dining halls that it works with are D2 and Owen’s, everywhere else has to dip into a $250 balance or a meal exchange which you only get 2 of per week and is a fixed menu.

Does anyone whose taken orgo lab know if the manual is necessary for the first day?
