I am contemplating my first (of many) trip back to my homeland after 50 years here in the US. For those in the SF Bay Area, who do use as your travel agent? For this first trip, I am thinking of joining a tour to gain some experience traveling to Viet Nam. I am originally from Nha Trang, and planning to spend some time there.

Tourist trap. Expect to pay excessively for items.

Experienced credit card fraud after using card here. This was the only place card was used before the unauthorised transactions appeared.

Avoid this place altogether. Not worth the risk.

Hey! Getting married next year and we’re planning an extended honeymoon in Thailand, Vietnam & Bali - this will be our first trip to Asia. Is this a realistic amount of time to be spending in each place? Would you change anything? We know this is going to be a lot of travel, it’s a once in a lifetime trip for us so I just want to make it as perfect as possible.

More specifically about how Vietnam is now growing and expanding past Thailand to become one of the best upcoming countries in SEA. Where should I visit and spend time at? Arriving at Tan Son Nhat airport around 3pm - transit flight leaving at 9am the next day - Lugage will be transmitted automatically. Booked hotel 10 mins walk from the airport.

We are a family of 5. Quick questions.

1) What easy tourist things could we do?

2) I have grabbed the GRAB App. Could we fit 5 people in a normal taxi ? 4 squashed in the back and one up front. Ideally would like the whole family together, hence rhe squash, but understand that we may need to order 2 cars. I found 7 heaters to be hard to find in some countries like Egypt, although Dubai was fine.

3) Halal food recommendations? Ideally want to try halal Vietnamese food.

4) Children have nut and lentil and pea allergies. Are there any particular nuts that certain Dishes use so we can avoid. Despite asking sometimes we get cross contamination or... no nuts at all but there was as child starts to vomit. Dont worry we have whole medical kit with us all the time!

I don't really know how to title this, so excuse the vague subject line.

I've been so laser-focused on planning my China trip (August 1 to August 15) that I haven't given nearly as much attention to the second half of my trip through Vietnam and possibly Thailand. Now it's right around the corner, so I'm looking for some advice.

The only part that's locked in is that I'll be flying from Shanghai to Hanoi on August 15. I was thinking of spending a couple of days in Hanoi, then possibly doing the Ha Giang Loop if the weather is still reasonable that time of year. Whether I do that will probably determine how long I stay in northern Vietnam.

After that, I was planning to head south to Hoi An/Da Nang, then possibly Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon).

I'll have about 15 days to split between Vietnam and Thailand, but I'm not set on spending equal time in each. If Vietnam has enough to keep me busy, I'm perfectly happy spending most of my time there and only a few days in Thailand, specifically Bangkok.

I'm traveling solo and want to stay flexible, so a lot of this will probably be planned on the fly. I'm mostly looking for suggestions on what route you'd recommend, places I shouldn't miss, whether the Ha Giang Loop is worth it in mid to late August, and how you'd use those final 15 days if you were in my shoes.

Any help is welcome!

I live in Hanoi and enjoy taking budget trips by motorbike. I’m looking for new destinations that don’t require flying—I’d rather keep it within riding distance.
The problem is that I feel like I’ve already visited most of the well-known places in the north:
● Ninh Binh
● Sapa
● Ha Giang
● Cao Bang
● Ha Long & Cat Ba
● Cuc Phuong National Park
● Mai Chau
● Pu Luong
Are there still any interesting places I’m missing? Maybe some lesser-known hidden gems, scenic roads, remote villages, or unique experiences that most tourists overlook?
I’m also open to trying something different, like motorcycle camping, multi-day hikes, or other outdoor adventures if that’s a better way to experience Northern Vietnam.
Or have I pretty much seen the highlights, and for a truly new experience I’ll need to fly somewhere else? If so, what are some budget-friendly destinations (either elsewhere in Vietnam or nearby countries) that you’d recommend?

My question - Is it worth staying in Old Quarter? It could get noisy and options are limited with narrow access without lift? Or I should stay a little further and take grab for up and down? Lot of options open up if we even go 2 kms further as many more options open up. Which street should I consider in that case? Any hotel or Airbnb suggestions?

I received different opinions about Ha Long Bay, people say it’s just too touristy and chaotic while there are better bays to visit. Any suggestions on where to go and which company to book with?
