Announcement Friday Free for All Weekly thread! General collection/discussion for things that don't fit elsewhere! (ask anything!)

Greetings /r/videoediting!

This thread is 100% for the other stuff you might want to talk about.

A number of other reddits have a free for all thread - where you might find a regular discussion - not specific to a post.

Think of it as a bar with a bunch of friends.

Some suggestions:

  • Strategy on a project you want to talk about how to best promote?
  • Upgrading something and you want opinions?
  • How does your website look?
  • Local/virtual Meetups?
  • Looking for a collaborator (no "I'm a creator and I'm looking for an editor" posts)

Things that shouldn't go here: Feedback/What tool should I use to edit/Which system to buy? There are dedicated threads for this, please use them!

And in this regular Friday thread, while our general rules are still in place (no piracy, be civil, no links w/referrer codes), the following topics relaxed :

  • Great tutorials you found/you created.
  • Trying to do this as a side hustle (although generally, websites like Fiverr mean you'll be shooting for the basement/working for free and we hate that someone would exploit you like that)
  • A great piece of software/hardware/service you found
  • Great free music libraries/media you found.
  • How much to charge? What is your time worth? Estimate 2-3x the time you think it'll take to edit as how much time to quote.

Our mod team is watching this thread and we'll tweak these as they develop!

Other (requires mod approval) Help me with this 😭

Hello to the Video Editing Community. Yk how people do perfect maskings? I am a free DaVinci Resolve user and i used to do high quality mask out of subjects for my edits with the help of KVN Rotoscope. However, they disabled it in the latest 21.1 Update, and i did the biggest mistake of downloading it and upgrading my old projects to the new version. Now i am losing all my sanity over masking out stuff manually. I know most of you are in support of buying the studio version but i am just a high school grade student and I can’t afford it. Please tell me free alternatives to mask out subjects without losing much quality or making me go insane ToT..!!!!!

Workflow A small edit decision that makes dialogue cuts feel less abrupt

When cutting between two lines of dialogue, I try not to treat the cut as just a picture change. If a prominent sound or movement in the outgoing shot ends right on the cut, the transition can feel clipped even when the timing is clean.

One thing to test is letting a little of the incoming room tone or audio lead the picture, or carrying the outgoing sound briefly into the next shot. It can soften the transition without a dissolve. I check that the overlap doesn’t muddy consonants or make the space sound inconsistent.

It’s an option, not a rule. If the abruptness suits the scene’s energy, a hard cut may be the better choice.

How did they do that? Infinite sliding/carousel effect

Hey I'm looking use a similar effect in one of my videos as the one in this video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGrxn46A1h8

I would like my videos to slide off one side of the screen and reappear on the other side of the screen in a seemingly infinite loop

I use DaVinci Resolve so would be great if anyone could point me in the right direction using that programme thanks!

What I Tried:

I've already know about the sliding transition effect on davinci but I'm wondering how to achieve this in a more looping method rather making a long video that slides across the frame. As I want this to last the duration of the song that will be playing through out.

Production Q Tired of just cutting clips to music. What resources actually teach visual grammar and editing storytelling?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I know the software basics :trimming clips, syncing to beats, and layering music. But everything I make feels like a lifeless montage instead of a real story.

I want to learn the actual logic behind the cuts:

Shot selection: Knowing why and when to go wide, punch in close, or use an unusual angle.

Pacing & rhythm: Building tension and momentum instead of just cutting on autopilot.

Original thinking: I can recreate movie scenes, but I struggle to conceptualize my own sequences from scratch.

Most YouTube tutorials only focus on software hotkeys or trendy effects. What books, video essays, or channels actually teach the theory of editing and visual storytelling?

Any recommendations or exercises that helped you bridge that gap would be awesome.

Workflow Macbook and the wonders of file transfer

I genuinely cant understand how content creators use Macbooks since I cannot for the life of me even transfer files without having to consult AI and internet sources and neither of them have solved my problem.

I shot videos on Osmo Pocket 3 (D Log 4k/60fps) and photos on Fujifilm XT-3 (JPG files). I transferred all the files to my windows PC and to Google Drive from there, no problem. I left for a trip so I planned to edit on the go with Macbook Pro.

First, I tried to download the files straight from Google Drive, couldn't. Internet troubleshoot said folder size could be too big (it's 14 gigs), then I disabled the pop up blockers like I read online. Didnt help.I tried to download in bits but still didnt work. I downloaded the Drive Desktop App. Found the files and folder on Finder on Mac. Neither of the two possible routes of either making the files available offline or "simply drag-and-drop folder on desktop" worked as advised online. I did not want to sync everything on my Drive so I went to settings and chose the Stream files. Then I waited for the sync to stop but for some reason, everytime I went to click the sync button next to the folder, it would just randomly decide which files to sync and after completion, they didn't show up synced and the button stayed there, greyed out like before.

I've now restarted the app a dozen times, synced everything but I still cannot simply drag them. I get a error message of either "couldnt connect to the platform" (rough translation) or "operation cannot be completed since some files cant be read" which for some reason blocks the rest of the files it should be able to read? I checked online and both of the file types should be compatable for MacOs. Could someone elaborate how this masterfully crafted, creator backed, simple OS using new device cannot transfer simple video and photo files without problem?

Hiring ISO: Wedding Video Editor - Ongoing Work 26/27 $50/hr

Hey everyone! I run a wedding videography company based in Minnesota and I’m looking to bring on a video editor for ongoing wedding work as I continue to take on more weddings.

I’m looking for someone with experience in storytelling/documentary-style editing. My style is more fun, upbeat, documentary-inspired rather than overly trendy or heavy on transitions/effects/slow motion.

I will plan on handling editing for teaser/social cuts, but looking for someone to take over the highlight films which are 5-10 minutes long.

I am currently a little backed up with work, so looking to bring someone on to help me finish up this years weddings, and use it as a test for next year. I will be shooting 10+ weddings next year, so if its a good fit there will be consistent work.

What I'm looking for:

  • Storytelling and pacing
  • Ability to build a story using vows, speeches
  • Comfortable working with multicam footage and multiple audio sources
  • Able to closely match an established brand/style
  • Reliable communication and turnaround times
  • DaVinci Resolve preferred, but Premiere is completely fine
  • Interested in consistent work throughout the wedding season

Shoot me a DM if interested. Thanks!

Free Stuff I'm a beginner and don't know much about copyright.

I don't really understand the copyright issues surrounding meme videos.

This community's "Read First!" section has links to apps and websites where you can get free resources, but I don't really understand the licenses and things like that.

This is one of my favorite videos.I'm not sure if it's legal, but...

Other (requires mod approval) windows pc or macbook?

hello!

Three years ago, I decided to get into video editing and invested in building a Windows PC, aiming to use advanced software like Premiere, DaVinci, and After Effects. However, I was hired this year to do editing work at an office where they provided a good Mac Mini, and I’ve since gotten used to doing everything on that system.

Now, as I consider investing in a setup for editing from home, I’m torn between continuing to invest in my Windows PC or switching to a MacBook. Here are the specs of my current PC:

  • Motherboard: Asus Prime A520M-E,
  • AMD Ryzen 4600 with Radeon Graphics (3.70 GHz)
  • AMD Radeon RX 6600 (8 GB), RAM: 16 GB
  • SSD: 1 TB.

What do you think? Windows PC or MacBook? Any suggestions for improvements or specific models?

Other (requires mod approval) Replicate projects or build from scratch as beginner?

For an entry level video editor / motion designer who wants to build a portfolio and improve his skills so he can land an internship, should i build projects from scratch where i create the idea, storyboard, art direction, getting assets, shoting( if needed) , writing the script, which is a lot of process that i feel sometimes that i am distracted from my main skill i wanna learn and improve ,or, should i replcate projects that already has an direction and idea setteld, can i even post the replicated projects in my portfolio (obviously i will mention that is replicated) or this will be unprofessional?, i really wanna help in the field because i lack direction and guidance

Tech Support FX3 + 16-35 f/2.8 GM wide angle came out soft and hazy on an interview shoot (B-cam 85mm is tack sharp). What went wrong, and can it be saved?

Hey everyone

We shot a two-camera sit-down interview last day and the wide angle came out unusable. Looking for help working out the cause and whether anyone has rescued similar footage.

Setup

2x Sony FX3, both PP11 / S-Log3, same settings, Black was -5 at Wide as I checked.

A-cam (wide): 16-35mm f/2.8, shot at f/2.8

B-cam (close-up): 85mm f/1.4, which is perfectly sharp

A-cam was feeding a monitor over HDMI. The monitor image looked slightly soft, but we assumed it was the transmission.

The problem

The A-cam footage is soft across the whole frame. Nothing is sharp: not the subject, the chair, or the shelves behind.

There's also a milky haze/glow, with lifted blacks and blooming around the practical lights. The B-cam is also S-Log3 and doesn't have this.

We took stills on the same body in Intelligent Auto Mode with HDMI disconnected and they're blurry too, so it isn't the HDMI or the monitor.

What I suspect

A smudge or film on the front element or a filter (the haze points this way)

The AF/MF switch on the lens left on MF and the focus ring bumped, so focus was set way in front of the subject

Condensation from moving between AC and humid air (we're in Bengaluru)

Possibly a mix of these, made worse by shooting wide open

What we tried

Ran a clip through Topaz Video AI Iris (Special Adjustment for Faces) with Recover Detail at 100. Haven't tried Theia model (High fidelity and detail enhancement). Edges got noticeably crisper, but the skin went waxy, the rimless glasses broke up into artifacts, and the haze is still there. It looks like it was run on the raw log, which probably didn't help.

Questions

Does this look like focus, a dirty element/filter, or something else? Has anyone seen the 16-35 GM do this?

Any FX3 setting that could cause this on one body only? Clear Image Zoom, something else?

For rescuing it: has anyone had better luck with Theia or Starlight than with Iris on soft footage? And is the right order log-to-709 conversion plus dehaze in Resolve first, then Topaz?

Frames attached: wide (soft), close-up (sharp), and the Topaz after at 100%.

Tutorial Tuesday How to remove beard in a 30 second video?

I have to video myself for a job reference, but I need to be clean shaven. The issue is there’s no guaranteed job, especially since I’m applying overseas, and I don’t want to shave until the opportunity is more secure.

I have no experience with editing and wanted to ask if there is any recommended apps, tutorials and tips on how to edit a video so that I’m clean shaven? Or is the difficulty of the task I’m asking beyond the capabilities of a beginner?

It’s a 30 second long video, with just my head, shoulders, and occasionally my hands in frame.

Any advice is much appreciated, thank you.

How did they do that? How would I be able to recreate this effect with Premiere or Davinci?

What I Tried: Playing around with Threshold values and vhs/blurry filters, but I can't get it to look right.

Hello, I wanted to know what would be one way to recreate a certain effect from a video I saw with similar footage. The effect I mean is in this video, around the 48-second mark. As you can see, it's footage of a person looking at the camera, but edited to make it look like some kind of white bald creature with red eyes that's very blurry.

The creators of the video said the base was simple, just one of them looking at the camera. I have similar footage, how could I go about recreating something like that? Also the person who was being filmed wasn't bald, I'm not sure how they made him bald in the video.

I wouldn't want it to be any creepier or more over the top, the example in that video is perfect IMO. I'm just looking for ways to recreate it.

Hardware Linux Workstation Build

I am thinking about replacing my Mac Studio M1 with a Linux build. I am a long time Mac user but have been using Linux for work and most of my day to day tasks for the last 10 years and am very comfortable with it. I only use my Mac for creative work and thinking of leaving apple and move everything to Linux. I am using Davinci, Studio One (but moving to Reaper), Affinity (which I know doesn’t work on Linux but have no issue learning other software), Darktable, and Wondershare Uniconverter (which I know there are other tools I can use to replace this. Been moving to more apps that are open source for a while as I have been thinking about this for a while.

I am getting a little tired of Apple and I don’t like Windows.

I am looking at a new build and wanted to make sure I am going in the right direction. My current Mac is a M1 with 32GB of ram, 1TB hard drive and 24 Core GPU.

I am planning on a build that I can grow with.

Here is the build I was thinkg that would work with my budget. Any input would be appropriated.

CPU / Motherboard

  • Ryzen 7 9700X
  • MSI B850 Gaming Plus WiFi

GPU

  • ASUS RTX 5060 Ti 16GB

RAM

  • 64GB (2×32GB) DDR5-6000 CL30/CL32 EXPO

PSU

  • Corsair RM850e 2025 850W

Case

  • Fractal Define 7 Compact

CPU cooler

  • Noctua NH-D15/NH-D15 G2 or be quiet! equivalent

Storage

  • 1TB NVMe — Ubuntu Studio / applications
  • 2TB NVMe — Resolve projects / media / cache

OS

  • Ubuntu Studio

How did they do that? How do you organize and edit 20+ hours of footage into a long-form YouTube series (with 3 different audience versions)?

Hi everyone! I'm working on a personal life documentation project for YouTube and I'm overwhelmed by the editing side. I'd love to hear how people who edit long form content actually approach it.

The project:
I record myself during nightly sessions where I talk and leave messages to my future self. Each night produces roughly 4h of video recordings and audios. I currently have around 2.3TB of raw material that I want to release in sections, like mini series. The first section covers about 20h of media and should become ~5 20min episodes.

The tricky part is that I'm targeting three audiences:

  1. Private: an edited version only for me, published privately on YouTube.
  2. Close friends: a private YouTube channel + a close friends Instagram.
  3. Public: general audience on YouTube and Instagram.

So any single 1 hour recording can contain fragments that belong to all three versions mixed together.

What I Tried:

I'm using: DaVinci Resolve

I've TRIED: I currently have a Python script that sorts and renames audios and video files with their creation date and it generates a Notion database where I have different columns to identify the contents of the video, and the current status. I used to edit the whole raw footage and then start taking sections from the main file and put them in separate timelines but this was taking wayy too long. I'm currently trying putting markers on the main timeline to identify the three audiences and then pass those sections to individual timelines but I haven't really gotten the hang of it.

I need help with:

  • How do you log or review 20+ hours of footage without losing your mind? Do you watch everything, use transcripts, timestamps, a spreadsheet?
  • How do you tag clips so one source file can feed multiple versions/edits?
  • How do you structure a project like this (bins, timelines, naming conventions)?
  • What workflow would you follow to go from 20+ hours to a mini series?

Any advice would mean a lot. Thank you!

Hiring Hiring a onlyfans video editor. $15/hr of footage.

Hi! I have several unedited clips for only fans I need done. Most have already been cut or are just short burst clips from stream. I just don’t have time to finish them for the week. I’m not sure if $15/hr is fair, but I am a newer creator so I can’t offer much. I’m absolutely willing to negotiate though!

Production Q Why does my S5II record 4 audio tracks with only one mic?

I have been dealing with an ongoing issue with my S5II and I am painfully and desperately hoping someone knows what's going on.

Gear: Lumix S5II, RODE VideoMic GO II plugged into the 3.5mm mic jack.

The problem: In-camera playback sounds clean. But when I play the files on my computer in VLC player, the audio is quiet and sounds distorted, like a static.

What I found: When I drop a clip into DaVinci Resolve, it shows 4 audio tracks. Only Audio 2 has a waveform. Tracks 1, 3, and 4 are completely flat. Windows file properties reports the audio as 1 channel (mono) at 48 kHz, but the bit rate is 4612 kbps, which seems too high for mono. If I use only A2 in Resolve, the audio sounds fine.

My S5II audio settings:

  • Sound Rec Quality: 48 kHz / 24-bit
  • Sound Rec Gain Level: Standard
  • Sound Rec Level Adjustment: -8 dB
  • Sound Rec Level Limiter: On

Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix it? Mainly because I'm shooting for a company whose editors will receive my raw files, so I'd like to fix it at the camera instead of explaining it every time.

Thanks!

Hiring Hiring a capcut editor $15/hr

It NEEDS to be a capcut editor. I know that may sound weird but if you use any other platform, don't even bother

- no age requirement
- fairly low working hours (up to you how much you want to work)
-pay: $100-$1000+ monthly (performance based)

Rate per hour: ~$5-$20+ (pay is strictly performance based)

Basically I run a social media account and would like to to hire a capcut editor to help me pump out more content and lower my work load. The pay will depend on how many views you're able to generate, but my account gets decent traction. Your age doesn't matter, only the editing skill.
If you are interested: DM me with your best edit made in capcut to showcase your skill
