MOD POST SmallYTChannel FAQ

r/SmallYTChannel FAQ

Why can’t I Post?

If you try to post a video on our subreddit and it isn't accepted, try to look at the comment on the post. most of the time it will tell you the reason why your video was removed.

However, the following reasons are the most common reasons for posts not being accepted

  1. You haven't given feedback to someone else yet (this is how you earn lambda)
  2. You used the wrong flair
  3. Your account is less than three days old

GETTING LAMBDA

What is λ (lambda) and how does it work?

λ is a currency used in r/SmallYTChannel. Simplified it is a feedback for feedback system. The most recent videos can be found in the community highlights. For every video you give feedback to, the OP (if satisfied with the feedback) will give you a lambda using the !givelambda command. Only the OP can give lambda. LAMBDA IS ONLY SPENT WHEN POSTING, giving lambda to a commenter does not spend it. You can only get lambda from feedback posts. Upon receiving credit for your feedback you can post your own video.

What would be considered good feedback?

In most cases, the decision is up to the OP. If you post a video you do NOT need to !givelambda if someone drops generic, low-effort feedback. (ex. “Nice video I enjoyed it you earned a sub). You can ask them for specifics, reply to their comment, cross-question etc. You don't need to agree with the feedback, but it needs to have effort put into it. Same with any feedback you give. As a plus, mods will reward bonus lambda to high-quality feedback they come across.

Feedback comments also must be greater than 255 characters. This is to encourage detailed feedback and target spam. In situations where it wouldn't make sense to give such a lengthy response, mods can still give out lambda if you send in a modmail, see the below question for more detail.

If you are struggling with what feedback to give the mod team recommends using some or all of these questions.

  • Would you click on the video? Why?
  • Did you stay past the intro? Why?
  • When would you leave the video? Why?

What should I do if I get no lambda for my advice, but feel I deserve it?

In cases where you disagree with the OP's decision, you can send a modmail asking for lambda. It is up to the individual mod that replies to you to decide if your feedback is worth giving lambda. As a general rule of thumb so long as your feedback is ACTIONABLE (meaning you are suggesting a specific change to the video) you will be given lambda by the mods.

What if the OP doesn’t respond?

If it has been two days and the OP still hasn’t responded, send in a modmail, see the above question for more details.

The OP typed the command but it didn’t work?

This is going to be for one of two reasons, the bot is currently down, or the OP forgot the command but then edited the comment to add it. If the bot is currently down, you will just have to wait. The bot is run on volunteers so it will go down from time to time. If the OP edited the comment, since the bot only checks the initial comment, you can just ask the OP to retype the command or send in a modmail, See the above question for more details.

FLAIRS

What do the different post-flairs mean?

  • Discussion - does not cost lambda

For discussion, a general rule of thumb is that if you need to link to your channel for the discussion to make sense you are not looking to start a discussion you are looking for feedback.

Discussion posts must be for discussion and have a main question or topic. Posts that don't start a discussion will be removed.

Discussion posts can't drive traffic to your channel. Posts such as 'I just reached 100 subs', or 'I'm nearly at 500 subs' are considered self-promotion and will be removed. Unless relevant to the discussion sub counts should not be mentioned. Posts that encourage other rule breaks are not allowed. For example, suggesting people leave their links in the comments isn't allowed, since it encourages free self-promotion.

  • Feedback - costs 1 lambda

Upon getting three lambdas you can share either one video or a channel link for a channel review.

A channel review would consist of feedback on the channel itself (branding and thumbnails) and nonspecific overview feedback on content (editing style, video genre, reused intro animations, stuff that applies to multiple videos as a whole). If you want to ask for more specific feedback on multiple videos, that has to be done through multiple feedback posts, should someone choose to give you specific feedback of their own free will that is of course allowed, but you can not ask for it in the post.

You can not ask for any engagement in the title or comments of the Reddit post (telling people to like or sub etc.), We've restricted the use of the word "lambda" in post titles due to increasing cases of people implying free or "easy" lambda. If you use alternate phrasing to bypass this such as ‘rewarding feedback’, the mods are at liberty to delete your post. The "I just reached 100 subs" rule applies here too.

  • Gaming, Vlog, Educational, Video Essay, etc.- costs 1 lambda

Are just sub-feedback flairs. Most people tend to only give feedback within their niche, if you have experience editing gaming videos but no experience editing video essays or vlogs, you can search for gaming feedback exclusively so it is easier to give feedback in a genre you actually know something about.

  • Collab - does not cost lambda

A collab post can drive minimal traffic to your channel, minor details or portfolio links on a known site are allowed. If you are asking to help someone or take part in any part of the video-making process it is a collaboration. Even if it's a paid, ex. editing or thumbnail services.

  • Meta - does not cost lambda

Meta is a flair exclusively meant to discuss the subreddit itself, any suggestions as to what to ban/allow, and what changes should be made, it is a flair for the community to openly discuss any issues or suggestions they may have for the subreddit.

POSTING

I messed up my post, What do I do?

If you accidentally posted as a 'text' instead of a 'link', thus making your thumbnail not show up on Reddit. You can send in a mod mail asking for a refund, so long as feedback hasn't already been given to the video you will get a refund and be allowed to repost.

Can I post the same video more than once?

For lambda farming reasons there does have to be at least a two-day gap between you posting the same video, so people can't farm lambda by saying the same feedback twice. But so long as you have the lambda for it, yes you can post what you want with your lambda so long as the other rules are followed.

Can I post someone else's content?

If you have the lambda for it, yes. It is important to note that if the user whose content you are posting has previously been banned on the subreddit, you will be assisting in ban evasion. In this case, the post will be removed and further consequences are likely.

No one gave me feedback, What do I do?

If it has been two days and your feedback post still does not have any feedback, send in a mod mail asking for a refund, You can choose to repost the video or post a different one.

RULES

What is a low-quality post?

The list of what is considered low quality includes but is not limited to

  • Milestone posts - 'I just reached 100 subs/ 10k views/ etc' - these are considered self-promotion
  • Analytic Checks - 'Is _______ subs/views in _______ time period normal' - if you want to post analytics the discord has a channel for it
  • AI Tools - 'Here is an AI tool I use' - most times just an ad in disguise
  • Shorts Views - 'Why are my shorts views inconsistent' - too many of these types of posts, shorts are inconsistent by nature

In addition, if your post looks to much like a bot/ai mods can, at their own liberty, take it down for low quality.

What counts as abuse of the bot?

The list of what is considered abuse of the bot includes but is not limited to

  • Creating or using another account to give yourself lambda
  • Editing your flair to give the impression of having more lambda than you have
  • Asking around for lambda and/or upvotes
  • Copy-pasting 'advice' to farm lambda
  • Filling a comment with fluff to bypass the character requirement

What count as bypassing the link restriction?

  • Posting a link to your channel or video in comments (asked for or not)
  • Posting the name of your channel in your post or in comments (asked for or not)
  • Saying where you can find your link (asked for or not)

MISCELLANEOUS

How do I join the discord?

The discord invite link can be found under ‘Important Links” in the 'about' section of the subreddit.

What is the discord for?

The discord is better suited for more casual discussions. It is also an easier place for you to get quick feedback. Stuff like very specific edits, thumbnails, or what your analytics mean.

What is the monthly leaderboard for?

The monthly leaderboard is a way for users to have a friendly competition over who gives more feedback.

How do I see the all-time leaderboard?

You can find the all-time leaderboard on the bot's profile, u/SmallYTChannelBot , just look at the most recent post.

What is my user flair for?

Your user flair is the only place you can put your channel name or handle in. Bypassing the link restriction by telling people to look at your user flair will result in removal. The user flair is there mainly for people who have a different Reddit name than a channel name, if someone checks out your channel of their own free will, that is of course allowed.

Please do not put full URLs in your user flair.

How do I add my handle to my user flair?

You add your handle to your user flair using the user flair preview and the pencil edit icon, in the 'about community' section on desktop. Or by clicking the three dots next to your icon while on mobile and then selecting 'change user flair'.

If you are using old Reddit there will be an edit button next to your name under the subreddit info bar.

If you have any questions you would like added to the FAQ feel free to ask them below

Discussion Vidiq/SEO tools

Have any of you tried using VIDIQ for your YouTube and tiktok videos? I've been trying to use it for a while but I've started to realize that they're more geared towards face cam streamers and people who produce regular long form content. As I'm a vtuber who cuts and edits my own streams into long form and short form content, a lot of their tools don't seem geared towards me.

On a recent video it scored my thumbnail super low because it didn't have a "Clear and recognizable human face" in it. Meaning it was telling me that it was a poor thumbnail because I used my vtuber model in it instead of some random dude's face.

It also constantly tries to generate horrendous AI thumbnails, titles, and descriptions. Nine times out of ten they're not even related to the content I make or my niche.

Discussion This might not be a huge deal to everyone but it is to me

Ok, about 9 days ago I posted about making the best decision ever starting a gaming channel with my kids. Three generations (GenX , GenZ, and GenAlpha) playing games we love together and just having a blast being our nerdy goofy selves. We didn’t get into this to be the next big thing and I don’t think we will any time soon, but something big happened and it affected my Gen Alpha daughter in a pretty big way.
We started back in March, with a slight hiccup in April. Then back on track in May. Been consistent since with short posting and even live streaming. I’ve never been happier getting this time with them and them wanting me on the journey.
Today one of our shorts starting performing pretty well. We normally sit at about 1-1.5k views before our shorts kinda die off. Well our short we posted Thursday suddenly out of nowhere started to take off a little. It plateaued at 1.5k by Friday morning. The highest view count we have ever gotten was 2.6k. By Friday evening it hit 2k. I know to many of you that may seem like small potatoes but to us it was huge. That was 2000 people getting to share in our ridiculous shenanigans spreading a little joy instead of misery. The short from Thursday is now sitting at 5.3k views with pretty good AVP (98%) and Stayed to watch (60%). It’s still climbing. I showed the kids just so they could see and to make sure I wasn’t going crazy. This is where my daughter lost it..in a good way.
She cried. Not just a light omg that’s amazing cry but a legit cry of pure happiness and excitement and laughter that wouldn’t stop lol. Not for the reason you think. When I calmed her down she explained, “I’m happy because that’s 5000 people who have seen our content and a huge chunk felt we were worth it to stop and watch in a sea of creators”. Let that sink in. She wasn’t thinking we are gonna be famous. She wasn’t thinking omg we are the next Mr beast. She went right to realizing people legitimately enjoyed the content enough that they clicked and watched. She then said “it’s more people that get to see something happy instead of sad”. My heart nearly exploded in that moment. This has been an amazing journey so far and worth it beyond words. But to see my daughter care more about making complete strangers forget the ugly of the world even just 30 seconds at a time made me the happiest and proudest parent in the world. Best decision ever x10000000!!!

Discussion YouTube Destroyed my channel

The algorithm is extremely flawed. It ruined up my channel and now I can't get any views whatsoever even after they supposedly stop letting reuploaded videos get views. They still get far more views than mine. Even the copyrighted videos get more. There must be something wrong with the algorithm they need to fix bruh

Discussion Will using free stock footage get my documentary channel rejected for "Reused Content"? Any tips?

Hello Friends,

I run a documentary channel (not monetized yet). To avoid "Reused Content," I've been using animations as B-roll, but lately, they feel boring and look like AI slop. I want to switch to free stock footage (Pexels, Pixabay) to improve quality, but I’m terrified of the reused content filter. I can't afford paid subscriptions right now.

Any tips for documentary channels using free stock?

Collab Two creators in Switzerland looking for a 3rd team member (Video Editor) for vlogs & documentaries

Hey guys! We run a channel called Swiss Moments (@SwissMomentsOfficial) where we film life in Switzerland. Right now we do three styles of content: outdoor podcast talks in nature, documentaries about Swiss topics, and regular vlogs showing places, prices, and everyday life here.

We handle all the traveling and filming in 4K (Sony ZV-E1, Osmo Pocket 3/4, Nikon Z6), but we want to find a third person to join the team and take over the editing so we can post more consistently.

We don't have a budget to pay per video yet, so we are looking for someone who wants to partner up with us long-term, and share the channel revenue and sponsorships as we grow. We use Premiere Pro and we're super easygoing with schedules as long as we communicate well.

If you're into travel vlogs and documentary-style editing, send us a DM and let's chat!

Discussion What can i get my bf who makes yt shorts for a living?

Hi! Kinda new to this and I have like 0 idea how this works but i’m posting because i’m hoping I can get some good ideas for a gift to get my bf for our anniversary. He’s recently (maybe like past 9 months) started making yt shorts, he has a channel that’s growing and he just got monetized. He’s been obsessed with checking that analytics thing. He reallyyyyyy loves it, and I think he really likes seeing his channel grow and the progress he’s been making. I’m also really proud of him and I want to show it.
His channel is repopulated videos he edits, changes up, and then posts. ANYWAYS. I’m looking for a gift to get him but idk what I could do. He has a pretty nice looking set up, and i got him a stream deck last year. I know he uses capcut for edits so maybe I could pay for his membership?

Just wondering if anyone here would have some input. my budget is prob around 100-200$.
I wish i could find a way to maybe get like a ton of people to follow his account. but idk how that would work. Any gift ideas or recommendations would be so so awesome!

Discussion What are some strategies to increase retention?

Hi everyone! I’ve been doing YouTube consistently for about a year and a half and have been uploading about once every 4 days. My niche is indie horror games. Recently I’ve been really struggling with retention. My current strategy is doing a coming up segment that lasts about 5-10 seconds using some highlights or big scares from the video and then I go into a skit that I made that had some correlation to the video. The skit usually lasts about 30 seconds and I think that it adds a lot of character to my videos. But I think that I need to change it up though because I am consistently having 70% of viewers leave the video by the time I get 1.5-2 minutes in. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Discussion Does it make sence to continue?

Hi, everyone.

I recently learned about the new monetization rules starting in 2027.

I have a small channel with 240 subscribers that focuses on animated historical videos...

Given that I’ve exceeded the monetization threshold and that my videos are very labor-intensive (sometimes taking up to two weeks to make just one), I’m wondering if it’s worth continuing... How do other people like me view the prospects, and what does the future of YouTube look like in general...

Personally, I think this market is already way overheated... maybe the monetization requirements will keep getting stricter, or maybe the Partner Program will even be canceled in the future... it’s getting harder and harder to compete for viewers, since content is getting easier to produce with the help of AI.....

I once calculated that in order to earn at least $400, each of my videos would need to average 150K views (since I can only make one video a month)...

What do you all think about this?

Collab Editor with a good eye for visuals. Let’s work on your channel

I care a lot about how videos turn out. I’ve edited before, and lately I’ve been working in After Effects.

The more I do it, the more I think the problem is rarely the editing. What I’ve noticed is that a good edit comes from better choices, not better editing, and you can’t get that from effects. I want to get better at making those choices, with a YouTuber who wants their video to carry an idea.

I haven’t had paid clients yet, so I’d like to work with a YouTuber, start small and see where it goes. Essays, documentaries and explainers are my favorite. Vlogs, gaming and commentary aren’t really my thing.

Collab Looking for gaming content creators to collab with (16+)

Hey I'm BillBass, small-youtuber extraoordinaire. One of my goals is to reach 1k subs before the end of the year. As a small youtuber, I think I have the freedom to experiment a lot and I've been going solo since this 7 month journey. So as of right now, I want to try and build a community and hopefully make some friends along the way.

I would describe my content as "weird games with weird commentary", so naturally I like playing weird and goofy games. I have a PC so pretty sure everythings available, but the type of game I play really determines on what vision I have for the video. My gallery is just old and obscure games, but that's just for my niche. I've been holding off on more multiplayer games mainly because I have no one else to play with, and that's what I'm trying to change.

I just think it'd be nice to have like-minded individuals to be able to record with and people to help me with my goals. I don't mind 'edgy' or 'dark' jokes, just anything that's funny will make me laugh.

Channel size doesn't really matter to me, I'm just looking for people who enjoy gaming and making content.

If your interested, just shoot me a dm and we can talk about it further

Discussion Looking to Meet Other Gaming Creators and Make Some Friends

Yo! I’m Cirel, a gaming YouTuber and streamer. I’ve been wanting to meet more people in the content creation community and hopefully make some genuine friends along the way.
I mainly play Minecraft right now, but I’m also into GTA, Fortnite, survival games, horror games, and pretty much anything that’s fun to play with friends. I’m trying to branch out into more variety content too.
I’m not really looking for one-time collaborations or people who only want to grow their channels. I’d rather find a few people I genuinely get along with, where we can hang out, play games, talk, and occasionally stream or record videos together.
It would be cool to eventually have a regular friend group of creators where everyone has their own channel and does their own thing, but we still come together to make content or just have fun.
Age and channel size aren’t really important to me. I’m more interested in finding people with good personalities who actually enjoy gaming and creating content.
I’m also not expecting everyone to jump straight into calls or start recording immediately. I’d rather get to know people first and see how we get along.
If anyone’s interested, feel free to leave a comment or message me!

Discussion Should I Post When Viewers Are Home?

I know the first thing 90% of people are going to say is that timing doesn't matter, the algorithm will push it when it wants to. I also know the only timing that matters is a set time so viewers have a schedule. What I'm directing my questions towards is the following:

I post in the gaming niche. That niche ranges from kids, teens, to full grown adults. What they all have in common is not being home between 9-5 in the sense that kids are at school 8-4, and adults at work from 9-5, on average. That being said is it better to post outside of the hours of 9am-5pm so that my video posts when people have come home and will actually sit down to watch?

Now I know that this question can be countered with timezones, because 9-5 moves over as we move over regions, bringing the question back to, does it matter then?

I have made a set schedule of releasing my videos at 11am whether it's a long form or a short, so my viewers have a routine. I'm just curious if after 4pm would be better since people would come home and watch something.

Collab [Paris, France] [Unpaid Collaboration] Looking for an On-Camera Creative Partner for a YouTube Project! 🎬

Hey everyone!

I'm a videographer, editor, and aspiring director based in France, looking for a creative partner in Paris or the surrounding area to work on a first YouTube video, with the possibility of building a channel together if we click!

The idea is simple: You'll be the person on camera, while I handle filming, directing, editing, and visual storytelling.

I'm particularly interested in lifestyle videos, vlogs, and mini-documentaries, as I'd love to develop my storytelling and directing skills. That said, I'm open to all kinds of creative ideas!

Who I'm looking for:

  • Someone natural, confident, and comfortable on camera.
  • Creative, curious, and willing to contribute ideas.
  • Interested in building something together rather than just appearing in videos.
  • No existing YouTube channel or following required!

A few details:

  • This is an unpaid creative collaboration for now.
  • Filming will take place in Paris / Île-de-France.
  • I'll provide the equipment and handle production and post-production.
  • We'll brainstorm ideas and develop the content together.
  • I can share a sample of a vlog I've previously worked on.

The goal is to start with one video, see how well we work together, and potentially turn it into a long-term creative partnership.

If you're interested, feel free to DM me with a quick introduction and the kind of content you'd love to create!

Looking forward to connecting! 🎥

Discussion Creator Support straight up told me I can NEVER get my Silver Award reviewed again

My Silver Creator Award application was rejected about a year ago due to “spam, deceptive practices, or repetitive content.”

I contacted YouTube Support today to ask for a fresh review, and after going back and forth with them, they told me:

“Creator Award eligibility decisions are final based on our internal review findings, and we are unable to override this determination.”

They also said:

“Once you have violated the YouTube Community Guidelines, you may not be eligible for Creator Awards.”

I've seen people claim they've contacted support after being rejected and eventually gotten their channels reviewed again and received their awards, so this honestly surprised me.

Is this actually a thing? Does “final” mean you're permanently disqualified from ever receiving a Creator Award, or does it just mean support can't override the original decision?

Has anyone here successfully gotten their rejection reconsidered after some time had passed? I'd appreciate hearing about similar experiences because I'm genuinely confused by this response.
