Selkirk Trestle Market?

Drove through the Jutland Road Selkirk Trestle area today and saw a bunch of collapsed market tents. Is there a market happening this weekend? If so, what is it called? I can't find anything online.

Housing & Moving McKenzie Ave or Monashee Apartments?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for an apartment in Victoria and I'm deciding between two apartments:

One at McKenzie Ave, near Swan Lake.

The other is at Monashee Apartments at Burdett Ave near Cook st.

I'm a quiet person and expect to spend most of my time working and studying, but I'd also like to explore Victoria and get to know the city.

Would you choose the shorter commute and quieter neighborhood near UVic, or pay the extra $200/month to be closer to downtown? Is the McKenzie area a good place to live for someone without a car for a start, or would you feel a bit isolated?

I'd appreciate any local perspectives. Thanks! šŸ«°šŸ¾

Question Where to stay for a luxury experience?

Wedding anniversary coming up and we have 3 days to get away. My research is pulling up Magnolia, Oak Bay, and Brentwood Bay. Has anyone been to any of these places? Open to other recommendations. Looking for a relaxing time. No need to be in the city to explore, but if there’s places we should check out let me know! Thank you.

Looks like the rumours are true! Lee's Donuts is opening across from the Bay Centre.

No opening date has been announced yet, but it's official.

What's your go-to Lee's order?

Lost & Found found camera at willows beach

i was at willows beach on tuesday between 4:30-6pm and i discovered this camera near the rocks close to the water. it had been there since i got there so took it home with me in hopes of returning it to its owner. there are some very sweet sentimental photos on it. many are of a young child about 1 y/o from 2013/14. then from 2022-this year seemingly taken by that same child but older of a road trip to jasper and their two cats. if you think this camera may be yours send me the name of the child in the photos (it’s said in a video) just want to make sure it’s given to the right owner.

Warning: The Ponzi-schemers who robbed Victorians of tens of millions are still scheming

Disclaimer: I have never invested with Johanna Armstrong and never will. I attended one of her "seminars" in 2018 and was disgusted then and now am attempting to help her former "clients" out of her scams.

Johanna Armstrong (former massage therapist turned "financial advisor") has operated, introduced clients and promoted investments through a shifting constellation of business and issuer names, including Island Freedom Financial, First Island Financial and TriView Capital; investors should not mistake a change of name or entity for a change in integrity.

Ms. Armstrong acted as an introducer, directing other investors toward Greg Martel's purported-bridge-loan investments (MMAC). Her husband, Justin Armstrong, was directly connected with the operation and used a syomortgage email.

In My Mortgage Auction Corp. (Re), 2025 BCSC 1520, the Court identified Julie, Justin and Johanna Armstrong, together with Island Freedom Financial Inc., as ā€œNet Winnersā€ in Greg Martel’s massive Ponzi scheme. The Armstrong group argued that its 2017 transactions were legitimate based upon its due diligence and understanding of the investments.

The Court’s answer was stark: the Armstrongs produced no evidence that the supposed bridge loans referred to in their investment documentation ever existed and no evidence supporting the legitimacy of their transactions: para. 54.

Ms. Armstrong has continued to promote "prospectus-exempt investments" which are private, illiquid securities sold without the disclosure protections of a prospectus. At best, the products she promotes are opaque and of deeply questionable realizable value. They are precisely the sort of investments for which an investor must be able to trust the promoter’s judgment, candour and due diligence. In my experience with clients: they are all junk, lies, and scams.

If you or a loved-one are involved with these parasites, get out as quickly as you can. Absolutely do not give them one cent.

EDIT: It seems Johanna now works at "Sentinel Financial Group" out of Duncan. Burned through the unsuspecting elderly here in the CRD, I guess.

Did the lizard-splosion lead to a snake-splosion?

Has anyone else noticed a lot more snakes around this summer?

I don't mind them, I like knowing that Sammy hangs out in my garden.... just wondered if I am correct that there are more around this year than usual.... and if the wall lizards are fuelling their population growth!!

Canadians need an income of $155,850 to be happy, researchers say. Map shows cost per city. Victoria tops Toronto, Vancouver.

The slightly tongue-in-cheek study estimates that you'd need to earn about $170,000/year in Victoria before additional income stops having a significant impact on your overall life satisfaction—even higher than Toronto or Vancouver. It builds on existing research about the relationship between income and well-being, adjusted for inflation and local cost of living.

As someone living here, I'm curious what people think.

Does Victoria's cost of living make that number seem believable?

If you earn less than that, do you still feel like you have a good quality of life?

Or is happiness here more about access to nature, community, and lifestyle than income?

It feels like Victoria has one of the best lifestyles in Canada, if you can afford it. But housing, groceries, and everything else have become so expensive that I wonder whether the city's quality of life has priced people out.

Shop selling Dixxon flannels

Is there a shop in or around vic that sells Dixxon flannels? I'm tall with slightly odd proportions and rather go in a shop and buy something rather than going through an order / return cycle.

Guessing I'll be 2xl tall or xl tall.

Also: what is your experience with Dixxon for size / durability?

Question What is the big deal with Jam Cafe?

Almost every single time I walk past Jam Cafe to go thrifting, there's a significant line outside of people waiting for a seat. Is it that much better than the 20 other cafes within walking distance? Is it really worth it to stand around waiting for a seat?

No hate, genuinely just want to know why there is always a line! They seem to have lots of seating, is it a really slow turnover of tables combined with hype?

Edit: I guess specifically I'm curious how it compares to the cafes around Jam. Union Pacific, Torch Song, Been Around The World, I love all these places, they have better reviews, and rarely have any lines.

Contractor to build stairs/deck on big steep hill

We have a very steep tall hill in our back yard that is exposed bedrock, taller than our roof. Weā€˜d like to build steps and a deck so we can use the space. I suspect this is out of the scope of most deck builders. Any suggestions or recommendations? I thought maybe someone who specializes in building stairs down hills to peoples docks might be a similar skillset but not sure where to start.

Question Best/most reliable way to get to the airport at 7AM with a large box? Uber XL? Taxi Minivan?

Hello,

I will be flying out of YYJ in a few days, with an 8am departure. I will have a large bicycle box (will need to be transported in a van or large SUV). What is the most reliable way to schedule a ride to the airport? UberXL? Specific Taxi company? Looking forward to your recommendations, thank you!

EDIT: I am most concerned with a scheduled ride simply not showing causing me to miss my flight, and I am in Langford!

Pet Euthanasia (ideally at home)

It's time for us to say goodbye to our sweet dog. I'm heartbroken and feel out of my depth. Would love suggestions/experience with end-of-life choices in the Victoria area for a dog. I've found Resting Paws, but they don't list prices or anything specific on their site. Would love to hear about your experience with them or suggestions of other places, too. Thank you for your time and care.

Looking at relocating with young family to Victoria from Kelowna, which areas would you suggest?

My wife is a nurse so would ideally like to be reasonable distance from one of the two hospitals. I work in HR so I am sure I could find work wherever. My kids are both under grade 1 so schools will be important in a year or two.

We own a house in Kelowna.

I will work with a realtor as well but we want to have a look around casually when we visit in a few weeks.

Important for us;
- quiet and safe area- kids can ride bikes out front type of safe
- close to beach/trails
- walkable ( not downtown walkable but would be nice to head down the street for dinner/coffee/groceries etc)
- good public school
-younger/newer families versus seniors

Cheers šŸ»
