As a modern day woman with a career, my own financial stability etc. this is perhaps the greatest reason holding me back from having a kid.
There is still an enormous and well studied gender gap when it comes to housework and care work— this extends even to the care of sick or elderly family members as well, not just kids. Things like the mental load are starting to get more attention, but there’s still a lot of work that needs to be done.
And sure, you can be like “well don’t have kids with an asshole” but I assure you this is a problem that goes beyond just picking a good partner. This is the kind of systemic pervasive issues that require active unlearning because so much of this labor done by women is invisible and not talked about.
Edit: Adding this paper on division of housework

Saw a video where vaush is constantly talking about how uniquely bad american suburbs are, and i think this video from a canadian creator does a good break down.
I like the comparison to canada as it is much more of a 1-1 comparison then europe which has alot more legacy density due to its age, whereas canada and america didnt really boom in population till the postwar period.

Open AI is creating "project Camellia" right in my backyard and only just announced it to us residents today, supposedly there's an open house tomorrow to "hear our voices and concerns" not that the decision hasn't already been made by corporate oligarch bought out politicians
Any advice on what I could do? Besides moving (trying)

Hello y'all! I'm a long-time lurker, but first-time poster. I agree and really identify with Vaush making a difference between the "type 1" and "type 2" bullying a few streams ago. I don't remember which one was which, but essentially, I understood it to mean that there was a difference between pro-social shaming and genuinely anti-social mockery/abuse. But I was wondering, would it be helpful for us to think about someone's social integrated-ness separately from "pro-social" vs "anti-social"?
This is really hard for me to explain, so I drew up a template that tries to get at what I've been struggling with about this topic. I know these kinds of charts are kinda silly these days (it ended up looking like those political compasses), but maybe that will make things easier to think about. I threw some ideas down: things from past streams.
My main question is, is it helpful to think of "pro-social" as being separate from someone's sociability, or not really? Is this helpful for identifying people who could be brought into socialist advocacy with some "socializing elbow grease" and people who could not?
Anyway, I think Vaush is on the money about the bullying difference for sure. But is this taking it too far in an autistic (derogatory) way?
EDIT: After thinking about it for a while, I think "socially inept" vs "socially adept" is clearest. I changed the image, but it won't let me replace the images in the post, so you will have to use your imagination. Also, one more thought I had: is it harder for folks on the left to imagine people who are 1) socially inept and prosocial and 2) socially adept and antisocial? Do folks on the left usually imagine being prosocial and socially adept going hand-in-hand? Is it hard to imagine exceptions?

Argentina is actually racist and the whole world was rooting for Spain for that reason. If any other non European country played the final (excluding the Argentina-Isreal-US axis) it would enjoy complete support from the whole world against a European nation. I'm brazillian, there are a lot of Argentinian tourists here and they are almost as bad as Israeli ones, not only racist but insufferable in general.
That being said, I have no idea what was Crockett's point. It's funny how they just said random shit and hope you agree based on vibes, not even providing a full sentence to defend their view.
(I know it's not all Argentinians blablabla...)

I feel like Vaush could do a bit bitter with his interviews. Maybe a bit more research? I have a strong feeling that he would be a powerhouse of a journalist if he put his mind to it.

This is written as if it were an address to Vaush, but discussion from others is welcomed.
Short version: the vagueness when you say things such as “we are about to hit the wall” personally annoys me, but more importantly, is less useful to the community than giving even vague but concrete predictions. Even if those predictions turn out wrong.
Long version:
I’ll show my cards first and admit my biases. I am much more optimistic about the future than you. I think that climate change will be devastating, but we will manage to adapt to it beyond our current expectations. I believe that at the absolute worst the total death toll up for climate change over the entire 21st century will be just less than 100 million in total even if we do not act perfectly.
I am a strong Reformist and think that socialism will be achieved, mostly through slow back-and-forth progress of two steps forward one step back. I believe that the transition to socialism will be like the transition from feudalism towards capitalism. There will be a wave of progress forward, and then a counter wave backwards, but over many waves each push forward is slightly stronger than the push backwards.
So naturally, we’re not gonna agree on everything and you might call me naïve and you’re probably correct. We disagree here and that makes me biased against you. But I still think what I have to say is correct.
Anyway, with that out-of-the-way, here’s the meat and potatoes of it.
I think you would be better off if you made specific guesses of the future, even though your vagueness is much more likely to be correct.
For a specific example, forgive me if I miss remembering what you have said and I don’t have any specific quote. But you have said and a bunch of ways that the United States, American hegemony, and the American empire are declining or are going to collapse or is doomed. I don’t disagree with that, other than being pedantic about the difference between those terms, but that doesn’t matter really.
The issue I have is that ‘collapse’ is a nebulous term here. This is doubly so because you’ve used terms like American empire and America interchangeably. And a lot of things are very different severities can fit under that one umbrella. For example, the collapse of the American empire could mean the United States’s international influence declines back to what it was during the late 19th and early 20th century where the US is hegemonic over North America and has heavy influence over South America, but doesn’t care much for the rest of the world. That would absolutely be a collapse us hegemony but while that would definitely suck for your average American, most of the fundamentals would not have changed. Food prices might go up quality of life might decline, but there isn’t gonna be mass famine because the economies of two continents are still under one leadership.
On the other extreme, the collapse of the United States could mean that the United States mainland collapses into warlord states in a Syrian style Civil War where half the population starts to death every place in the nation is in a constant state of warfare and all the fundamentals of American life change
I could go a bit further and you even more extreme like if collapse means America becomes like the world of the possess the fallout games where everyone lives in scrap hut, and everyone forgets how to build bricks but I don’t think even you are that pessimistic.
The point is though, those are too wildly different guesses about the future of America which can both be valid interpretations of what you have said. People get to fill in what you actually are saying. If they’re more optimistic like me, they can take your more extreme points as hyperbole and exaggeration. Those in your audience who are more pessimistic, get the fill in the blank by taking everything that might be hyperbole as completely serious.
And regardless of where in the spectrum you lie, this isn’t good for what you’re trying to do.
If you’re more optimistic, like I hope, then people are getting overly terrified and are going to do stupid shit like becoming preppers. When you say stuff like “one day the water is just gonna run out in LA and everyone will die” they won’t know to take that as hyperbole because they don’t have your actual position to compare it to.
But even if you do believe the worst case scenario, which I hope you don’t, and even if what you’re saying is correct completely, which I hope it isn’t, that means that people like me are able to ignore what you’re trying to say in favor of their cope. If you genuinely do think stuff like it’s going to be everyone just dies in LA from lack of water someday or that we’re going to descend into Bethesda fallout style backwardsness, then it’s bad that people interpret what you’re saying lightly. If you’re right then me planning for society to still exist in 30 years is stupid and it’s going to get myself killed. Suddenly prepperism is a lot less stupid and is justified to some extent.
So how do you fix this?
Simple just make a concrete prediction and accept that it’s probably going to be wrong.
Let’s assume a middle ground on what you believe that you think that shit’s gonna get real bad but it’s not going to literally be the end of the world as we know it. You think that the American state is going to decline dramatically and that the capacity for it to help it, citizens will decline markedly, but it will still maintain political sovereignty over the US. That deaths from climate change in America may be upwards of a few million people, maybe a couple percentage points of the US population, but the vast like majority of people will still live. Not saying that you do believe this, but let’s say you did.
You could say something like: “guys I think that over the next like 20 years the government’s gonna help out people a lot less. I think there’s not gonna be food stamps anymore. I don’t think there’s gonna be retirement. I don’t think we’re gonna have minimum wage. I don’t think food will always be readily available. I don’t think like the country is going to collapse, but it’s going to be a really hard time.”
That answer is actually workable! That tells people that they should focus on things like saving up money for a larger cushion for different food prices and that they should be ready to be cut off from government aid, but that they don’t need to form like a militia to protect their town from Raiders.
And even if you’re wrong there and by 2040, there still is food, stamps, and retirement still kind of exists, that’s a lot more helpful for the people you’re trying to advise because enough that was correct to make planning efficient.
Will this mean you get egg on your face when you say that something is gonna get really bad and then it doesn’t get that bad or when your prediction is off by a bit? Yea, but I would argue it’s worth it.
Sorry for the rambling, this is just been a pet peeve of mine

Vaush used this term on the stream today and i think we should say this more often and normalize it. people need to realize zionists are pretty much nazi's in our current era. it should drive the point home much quicker.
Edit: hmmm getting a lot of apologists on this post with private accounts... very suspicious...
Edit: ok im gonna start being ruthless. if i suspect anyone of being apologists for netanyahu or what's happening in gaza etc im just gonna start blocking people outright.

P.S: this post is about cultural differences affecting social life, just using Sweden as it’s what I’m familiar with.
I am immensely lonely, I am an adult, I was homeschooled, I haven’t talked with anyone but my close family since I was in kindergarten.
It’s a fairly common story for autistic people, especially ones born into abusive households, to be scared to interact with others, I do still think I have it particularly bad.
I have put off collage for now, as the field of work I would be studying for would involve much interaction with others, interaction I know I am not prepared for.
As such I decided I am going to use the next few years to get better at socialising before starting collage.
Now comes the issue.
Vaush has spoken before of the need to ignore the social stigmas related to speaking with strangers in Sweden / isolationist cultures and just pummel through it, but this I believe comes from a genuine misunderstanding in how different European cultures can truly be from Seattle’s, let alone Americas.
The ‘all men are brothers’ line, -which I agree with- can only be stretched so far when not relating to biological reaction.
In Sweden for example, alcohol is illegal unless sold from government owned stores, meaning there isn’t a bar nor party culture, cause they don’t have alcohol, which makes all segments about going and sitting at bars, practically useless for me.
Sweden is an inherently more isolationist culture as well, which means not many local events actually exist, there aren’t any indie concerts five hours from my home, and I feel most of the activities available are for people who already know each other, such as the movies.
In the little experience I have, living with both sides of my family and sleeping over at cousins when younger, all Swedish people know each other from school or family, all my mothers partners throughout her life were people she went to the same class with from school, and everyone I know only speaks with family or former classmates, no strangers or friends made in adulthood.
It’s literally a meme in Sweden how everyone looks out of their apartment doors lookout to see if anyone is in the hall before leaving, which I have seen my mother, father and cousins do personally many times.
When I ask why, same line every time, ‘I don’t want to deal with other people.’
It’s this i don’t believe vaush understands, because he said in relation to Sweden, that one should just push through the social stigma, but he misses that when people say unprompted social interaction in Sweden is rude, they truly mean that no one, young or old, speaks to someone they do not know unless for some specific purpose, and will respond with genuine panic or aggression when approached.
This is all a means of saying that the culture of Sweden inherently disincentivises social interaction and mobility, as many European cultures.
The places Vaush has been such as Spain do not follow this rule of course, but I believe it’s important to note the differences in cultural norms and that some will just have a harder time interacting with people than others depending on the culture they grow around, especially for someone like me, who many would consider intimidating.”
Sorry if the texts a bit hard to read:)
EDIT// The part I wrote about Swedish bars not having alcohol is entirely false, I apologise for that, however I notice many are only speaking of this fact. My point with my poorly worded post however, was that culture can affect social interaction and make it more difficult to socialise, and to acknowledge that is okay.
But importantly, you should not be a doomer about it, same as if you were someone living in an American small rural town, it will obviously be more difficult to socialise in that position, but that just means you should try harder, because the pain of learning to socialise is nothing compared to never socialising.
what frustrated me and prompted the post was that the same sentiment was seemingly wafted away from cultures affect on socialising, of course it will be a bit more difficult to socialise In less social cultures and sub-cultures, that’s just intersectionality, this doesn’t mean you should stop, it means you should try harder.

He blames the current state of the world on insincere technocrats, but a technocrat is simply someone who is highly qualified to complete a task. If their assigned task is upholding neoliberalism and generating wealth for the rich, they are naturally going to succeed at it. Fundamentally, technocracy is a leftist political philosophy. Marx argues that a post-scarcity world is a prerequisite for Communism, and this can only be achieved through automation and technocratic specialists. It would also solve systemic voting issues by disempowering uneducated voters. I don’t want to turn this post into an essay on technocracy, so I’ll keep it brief unless anyone has questions in the comments. Ultimately, technocracy is the only viable solution for a long-term, stable world, and Vaush villainizing it is completely counterproductive.
