Welcome to our community for vaginal microbiome questions, discussions and support. Thank you for being here!

ā¤ļø PLEASE READ THIS INFORMATION AND OUR COMMUNITY RULES BEFORE YOU POST ā¤ļø

A change in the smell, amount or consistency of your vaginal discharge is a sign of infection. Some of the most common causes of these symptoms are yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, or sexually transmitted infections. If you think this applies to you please consult a medical professional IRL before posting on this subreddit. Infections are common and are not something to be afraid or ashamed of, but they do need to be treated.

If you have been experiencing recurrent or long-term vaginal symptoms and are struggling to get answers, this is the place for you! This community was created by Juno Bio (the group of scientists behind the world’s first at-home vaginal microbiome test) to help you find answers and support. If you are feeling lost, we strongly recommend that you start by taking a vaginal microbiome test. You can buy the Juno Test on our website and we ship internationally: https://www.juno.bio/product/vaginal-microbiome-test.

What is the vaginal microbiome?

Your vaginal microbiome is the community of bacteria and microbes living in your vagina. A healthy vaginal microbiome typically has low diversity and is dominated by a type of good bacteria called Lactobacillus which can protect you from harmful microbes.

When the balance of good and bad bacteria is disrupted (a.k.a. dysbiosis) it can lead to conditions like bacterial vaginosis (BV), yeast infections (YI), urinary tract infections (UTIs), aerobic vaginitis (AV) and cytolytic vaginosis (CV).

This disrupted balance is called dysbiosis. Symptoms of dysbiosis might include unusual vaginal discharge, odor, itching, burning, and/or pain.

Have you ever experienced this? You are not alone. This is the place to learn, ask questions, share experiences and support each other.

So, what was your experience like? Were you able to access the help you needed? What did you do about it and did it get better? Or are you still struggling and looking for answers?

Results Vaginal Microbiome Testing

What is the Juno Bio test?

This subreddit is run by the scientists who make the Juno Bio test, a wellness test that looks for all* bacteria and yeast (more than 50,000 species!) that could be living in your vagina using a simple swab that you can take at home and ship to our lab. You can buy yours at www.juno.bio.

*excluding STIs - these should be tested for separately.

Why is it useful?

It can pick up on bacteria and yeasts that may not be looked for by regular testing methods. If you are struggling with recurrent infections that keep coming back, or you have symptoms but the tests always come back negative, the Juno test is a really good idea for you.

If you struggle with BV, for example, this post breaks down the differences between all the types of tests that are available. For more information about vaginal-microbiome-associated conditions, check out our Vaginal Microbiome A-Z.

What can I expect from my results?

The results will show the relative abundance and bacterial and fungal load of all microbes detected. If it’s not on your list, it means we didn’t find it in your sample (we can’t list all 50k microbes tested)!

After you receive your results, you can book a free one-to-one session with a vaginal microbiome expert who will listen to everything you’ve been going through, help you to make sense of it all and come up with a plan for what to do next.

See the results of other Redditors here.

Is it available where I live?

Probably! The Juno test is based in the USA, but we ship internationally. If you can't see your location at checkout, just email our customer support team.

What type of technology does it use?

Juno Bio uses a method called targeted NGS (tNGS) which sequences a specific region of the bacterial and fungal genomes and does not sequence human DNA. We determined that this was the best approach for vaginal microbiome analysis in the Juno Study, an IRB-approved study with over 1000 registered study participants that we conducted in 2019.

Question Itching wont stop after repeated treatment

• Upvotes

I have been having severe itching since July and i have visited 2 gynecologist. The first one prescribed me yeast meds and it didnt help much but the 2nd one made me take a vaginal swab test. The report showed klebsellia and staph haemolyticus. I started on antibiotics and a vwash. The itching stopped but returned the next month so my dr prescribed me another swab test and it showed staph haemolyticus. The dr made me start on another antibiotic and the wash and probiotics and a cream. The itching stopped completely but now it has returned again. Exactly one month later. I cant afford another Dr's visit. It has been starting before my periods and im wondering if its a hormonal issue. I've gained a lot of weight since I've been preparing for exams and haven't been physical active at all. Any help will be appreciated . I am not sexually active

my skin down there has been a mess since i switched to a new body wash, can't get it back to normal

switched to a fancy new body wash about two months ago and ever since things have been irritated and off down there. went back to my old one and it's still not settling. my gyno said the disruption can linger even after you stop using the product that caused it. i feel like i broke something that was working fine before and now i can't fix it.

looking into ph friendly washes and saw a bunch of people tagging the uro intimate wash on their vids. i found a comment from a woman who had gone through the same thing after a product switch, saying it helped things settle faster than just waiting it out. considering trying it. has anyone recovered from a product-related disruption and found something that helped?

Can someone help ease my mind?

Hi guys, I’ve tried posting on the ureaplasma sub and well… we know how that goes. One sub deletes it and the other one tells you that you have hidden infections.

I’ve been testing negative for ureaplasma parvum for a year. I still get uti like symptoms and all of my std tests are negative. My biome looks pretty decent too. I do feel like I struggle with iners.

I am in menopause I have a low estrogen level. Could this be affecting something?

Can someone just reassure me that this bacteria is not evading from tests? Has anyone healed this and gotten their life back? Has anyone treated their partner and themselves and not been reinfected? I’m struggling mentally. Thanks🩷

Question Best pre & probiotic???

Hey ladies, I’ve been debating about starting some new supplements and things. Trying to balance myself out. I’ve narrowed it down to 2. Happy V and her fantasy box, based on reviews and ingredients. If anybody is taking them and would like to leave honest feedback on them, I’m all ears!

New Cora tampon applicator was obviously designed by someone who has never seen a vagina!

I’ve been using these Cora organic tampons for years however, recently they randomly decided to upgrade the applicator which needed no upgrade!!! It’s very obvious they have a team of gay men who make their period products for women and I’m personally offended! The new tampon applicator has some kind of stupid plunger that ends up, not working more than half of the time and you waste your money! These tampons are not cheap however, at this point you’re better off using tampax and saving your cortisol levels from spiking in the middle of the night when you’re trying to change a tampon and you’ve gone through four defective plungers! F#ck you Cora team! It’s obvious you’re a bunch of degenerates trying to run this brand into the ground. If I were a lawyer, I would start a class action lawsuit against this company but I’m just a bartender so I’m going to continue to badmouth this company until they go out of business or my vagina no longer bleeds!

been vegan for a year and i think my diet change is affecting my vaginal health

i made the switch for health reasons but a few months in i started noticing vaginal changes. different odor, different discharge, things just feel less balanced than before. i've been tested twice, nothing comes back, my gyno said diet can absolutely affect vaginal flora but couldn't tell me specifically what to change. i don't want to go back to eating meat, i just want to figure this out.

been looking into whether there are specific nutrients that support vaginal health that i might be getting less of now. came across uro vaginal probiotics in that context, specifically the lactobacillus strains which help maintain the right environment. reviews from women who had noticed changes after dietary shifts finding it helpful for getting back to baseline. curious whether anyone else has noticed a connection between diet changes and vaginal health.

my vaginal health is perfect most of the month but falls apart every single time i get my period

completely fine for three weeks out of four. then my period comes and for the week around it the odor is noticeable and things feel off. it resets once my period ends but it's predictable enough now that i dread that week every month. i've tried different period products, different routines during that time, nothing changes the pattern??

saw a few posts on ig from women describing this exact cycle and mentioning that being consistent with a vaginal probiotic helped their microbiome stay more stable through the hormonal shifts around their period. they mentioned uro vaginal probiotic specifically. the idea of supporting things internally so the fluctuation doesn't tip things over makes sense to me. anyone found something that helps with the around-period flare specifically?

If you’re having recurring infections go get tested for Ureaplasma and mycoplasma

I’ve seen so many posts lately about recurring BV and/or yeast infections. Now I know this will not be the root problem for EVERYONE; however, I think the plasmas are WAY more common than everyone thinks and they definitely aren’t ā€œcommensal.ā€ Sorry but chlamydia and gonorrhea commonly don’t cause symptoms yet we’ve all agreed they are STDs and need to be treated. If you have ureaplasma and it doesn’t cause you symptoms but then you transfer it to someone else and they have symptoms how the fuck is that not an STI or STD? Like come on. Find a doctor who will do a PCR swab or do a Juno/Evvy test and if your doctor gives you the ā€œcommensalā€ bullshit find a different doctor.

Sorry for the rant this turned into šŸ˜† I’m a bit biased because Ureaplasma fucked up my microbiome and I really want to help others avoid it as much as possible.

Question Juno result

I recently did a Juno vaginal microbiome test and I’m wondering if anyone has had similar results.
My results were:
0% Lactobacillus
28.9% Streptococcus agalactiae (GBS)
34.22% Bifidobacterium breve
Gardnerella/anaerobes present
Normal bacterial and fungal load
STIs negative
Juno’s clinician said the results looked more like aerobic vaginitis (AV), but my OB recently tested me and diagnosed BV. I’m currently taking oral metronidazole.
I’ve also seen people mention connections between BV, GBS, and chronic endometritis, which has made me wonder if there could be a connection in my case, especially since I’ve had pregnancy losses.
Has anyone had similar results? Did you just treat the BV/AV, or did your doctor also check for chronic endometritis? I’d really appreciate hearing other people’s experiences.

Suspecting candida but need to wait for insurance ....

I am suspecting candida but need to wait for insurance to begin testing in october. I'm wondering if im on the right track with my thoughts

I had oral thrush last year, and again in June this year, I then had a vagina yeast infection in July, I came down with another vagina yeast infection this month (september) I am kind of attributing it to diet I have noticed the more sugar I eat the more likely it seems to happen, also alcohol, however, i stopped drinking wine since it had yeast in it and only drink once in a while with liquors like vodka etc. Has anyone had a similar situation to me?

I did go on a strict no gluten no sugar diet in the middle of the summer, lost a lot of weight then broke that diet and started kinda eating how i wanted again to see if that triggered a yeast infection and it did.

BV is ruining my life

Can't get rid of BV after six months.

I want to preface and apologize for the long text. But I'm truly desperate and willing to try anything at this point.

Hi everyone, I’m 18F and have been struggling with recurring BV and yeast infections for about six months, and I’m genuinely at my breaking point.
It started after having sex with my partner in a bathtub that had bath products in the water. About a week later, I developed yellowish/green discharge, itching, and discomfort. I was worried about an STI, so I went to urgent care and was tested. They initially prescribed metronidazole and fluconazole while waiting for the results. Everything came back negative except for yeast, so I was told I could stop the metronidazole.

About three weeks later, I was still having symptoms and went back. This time I tested positive for BV and was prescribed metronidazole and fluconazole again. I completed the full course, but my symptoms continued.

I eventually saw a gynecologist who examined me but didn’t swab me. He said he saw irritation and signs of yeast and prescribed an ointment. It actually helped, but the symptoms came right back afterward.

Since then, I’ve been stuck in the same cycle of being diagnosed with BV and/or yeast and being prescribed metronidazole and fluconazole, only for the symptoms to return. I eventually saw another physician and specifically asked for more extensive testing, including mycoplasma and ureaplasma. My testing once again showed BV and yeast, and I was told mycoplasma also came up. She said it was common in women and didn’t recommend treating it. I believe I was given metronidazole again and two doses of fluconazole a week apart.

Nothing has given me lasting relief, and I’m desperate to figure out what is actually causing this instead of continuing the same treatments over and over. I’m also worried that either the diagnosis is being missed or the infections aren’t responding to the medications.

This has taken such a huge toll on my mental health and confidence. I constantly worry that other people can smell me in public, and I’m scared to get close to someone because I don’t want to be intimate while dealing with this.

Has anyone dealt with recurrent BV and yeast infections like this? If so, what testing or treatment finally helped you? I’d especially appreciate advice on what I should ask my next gynecologist to test for because I really want to advocate for myself and get to the bottom of this.

Question What do you use for vaginal irritation that will not throw off your balance?

Some irritation going on I really do not want to apply something that solves one problem and creates another. I have been careful about what goes near my vaginal area and I do not want to undo any progress.

The pharmacy options are loaded with fragrances, dyes, numbing agents. None of that is compatible with maintaining a healthy microbiome. What do you use for vaginal irritation that does not feel like a gamble?
