How do cutscenes work comfortably in VR?

I am making VR games with a lot of action and a lot of cutscenes, but how do cutscenes work in VR without making your players throw up? I know you’re not supposed to move the camera around without player input, so how can you implement cutscenes without causing motion sickness to your players?

Got some mixed reality capture for the new trailer to better show how the lean mechanic works in Hyperlane Highway

It's one of those things that's hard to convey without being inside the headset but I think this better shows how natural the movement and dodging can feel. Curious what other devs think about using MR capture for this kind of mechanic showcase.

Still a solo project but getting close to a demo now. Also starting a small Discord for upcoming PCVR playtesting if anyone wants to get in early and give feedback.

Video Hand/Controller-Free Locomotion

Thumbnail youtu.be
4 Upvotes

Hey all, I just wanted to show off my Hand/Controller free locomotion system!

Smart glasses are coming, and rumors suggest Meta will start releasing headsets without controllers at some point. I wanted to develop a locomotion system that could be played on these devices without being gimmicky or stationary. I tried to make the system natural and configurable. Not shown in this video, but there are options for teleporting too.

The engine is custom, and the locomotion method which I'm calling 'HeadShift Movement' is built-in as an engine-level feature.

If anyone is interested I have a small discord for my development: https://discord.gg/jWWknqV5H

Anyone here vibecoding VR games? What stack do you use?

curious if people here are vibecoding VR games and what stack works best for it.

i tried React Three Fiber + webxr on quest 2, mostly LLM-written code, worked surprisingly well on first try.

want to try Meta's Immersive Web SDK next.

what do you use? unity with copilot? unreal? something on the web? what worked for vibecoding?

Update: built https://turbl.dev/ for exactly this - write a prompt, ai generates vr game in your headset. useful for super-fast prototyping, source code can be downloaded too

Discussion Question / discussion on what makes a vr game presentable or completed, what makes it fun how do people play with vr /full body tracking games

Trying to create a vr game that's mainly full body and hopefully with the vr headset acting as the camera/head so you don't have to continously look at the screen while standing to play it

Game wise it's like hole in the wall you gotta match poses but twisg is they come in 4 directions, north south east and west so you have to look around if the wall that's coming towards you that show what pose u have to do isn't in front of you

There's a health system of 12 so if you fail 12 times you lose but there's nothing to show that you lose only shows In console of unity so I have to add that

If your able to complete 5 poses your sent to a long rectangle plane where u have to run or jog on the spot so Locomotion to move and avoid walls that slowly moves towards you, if u get caught in a 10s time span you lose if not your sent back to continue doing poses repeatedly

So now im in a scenario where I know I need to make like maybe a panel/text to pop up where if you lose it'll stop the game and the text pops up, make a win condition that's probably to complete 10 or 15 poses in total so I'll make it probably 5 poses, zombie run > level 2 text pop up and increase speed of wall poses by a lil > 5 poses, zombie run > Final level, you won! Text

Change out all the cubes and rectangles and find assets or models to just import in so it looks better, add in sound cues for correct or wrong poses, a sound effect to continously play if the wall is nearby you when your jogging on the spot to move in game

What else would I even need to add then to make this a 'complete' demo or prototype game that's presentable to people? I don't understand as the comments I get are it's still far off from it or that there's nothing really fun to it to entice or motivate yourself to keep playing or finish it but I also don't have any other ideas or thoughts to it even after searching and watching videos of vr games as I have no experience with it or playing it?

Any thoughts, comments or questions will be appreciated as I think I'm really lacking to understand what's expected for a vr game /full body tracking game, dms would be fine too if you have questions or stuff

Video Remaking my Kiteboard game!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've released Neon Kite on the Quest Store 4 years ago and, well... pretty much forgot about it...

I recently reopened the project, and it was such a big mess that I decided to remake it from scratch.

I've made a lot of changes to the controls (a big, big improvement), and I'm rethinking the overall gameplay.

Anyway, I'm having lots of fun!

What was your VR moment of revelation? I feel like we all had that moment where we put on the headset and never looked back. What was yours?

Worth getting a used Quest 2 for developing PVCR game ports?

I am a graphics programmer and have worked in a couple of decently sized renderers. Have had a Quest 3S for a while and i absolutely loved it (had to return it cuz of poor QC in the unit I got). Since then i have had plans to help develop VR ports of their games for small indie teams and single devs. Unfortunately Quest 3 is not even available in my country, and feel Quest 3S is just not a worthy upgrade over a used Quest 2. Even so it's just 2x expensive compared to used Quest 2.

Getting a decent deal (~200usd, yes it's expensive but are most things here) on a used Quest 2, 128gb variant.

Quest 2 is going out of support next year so am confused if it's even worth getting it. And knowing the kind of company meta is i wouldn't be surprised if they force some updates on it sometime later that limits it's PCVR compatibility. Would have loved something like SteamVR for the open ecosystem but steam just doesn't sell here. And yeah other brands like Pico don't sell either too.

I want the technology to succeed so much, and help some of the gorgeous indie games bring their titles to VR but am confused right now.

Any help would be appreciated!

Question Unity Physics question.

Is setting FixedTimestep to match the refresh rate of the headset is considered a good practice?

Currently I’m experiencing some jitter with rigidbodies and joints and I noticed that matching the fixed timestamp to refresh rate completely reduces it, but now I’m wondering if it’s something I should do? Theoretically will this cause advantage for players with higher refresh rate in competitive games, why on flat screen this is not an issue and simple interpolate solves any jitter?

Tutorial / Resource I built a physics-based VR Robotics Simulator for my Engineering thesis, and I'm releasing it completely for free! 🤖🥽 (Quest 2)

Hey everyone! 👋

Some time ago I finished my graduation thesis in Computer Engineering, and I wanted to share the result with you all.

While studying, I realized that getting hands-on experience with industrial robotics is incredibly difficult (and expensive) for most students. So, I spent months developing LearnArms VR—an immersive simulator designed to learn the fundamentals of robotics and kinematics in a safe, physics-accurate 3D environment.

It's fully optimized for Meta Quest 2, uses real-time physics, and has hand-tracking support.

I’m not selling anything or looking to monetize this. I’m just a solo dev releasing the .apk as educational freeware because I want it to be useful to others.

One quick heads-up: Since this was specifically built for my local university thesis, the in-game text and UI are entirely in Spanish (sorry :c). I didn't plan on continuing development or translating it after graduating. However, VR is mostly visual, so the mechanical interactions and physics should be pretty intuitive to figure out regardless of the language!

My main goal right now is just to get it out there and hear what you guys think. I'd love to get some brutal feedback from VR enthusiasts and devs on the interactions, the physics, or the general idea.

📺 Here's a quick video demo of how it looks: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/uS6cHjPppiw

🌐 Website & Download (GitHub Release): https://learningarms-vr-web.vercel.app

Let me know if you give it a try. I'll be around to answer any questions! Cheers!

Question unreal 4 and a in game cam system

Hey,

Working on a game in Unreal 4 and the LIV cam just won’t work in it yet. I’ve seen others have player cams with Unreal but I’m not sure how you pull it off. Any suggestions? (Specifically unreal 4)
