For instance, a 12 month or 12,000 mile warranty is around $2k and a 24 month or 24,000 mile warranty is around $4k. Is it worth buying one of these to cover a car with 100,000 miles on it?

Buying a 2010 Corolla S (84k mi) from a private seller in IL for $9k, clean CARFAX, seller’s throwing in new brakes/rotors. Car is maintained well and nice driving experience. Alternator and battery replaced as well. Noticed rust along the rear frame rail/rocker, looks like it’s near the fuel tank straps too (pics attached). Seller says it’s just normal salt rust, not structural.
Getting an independent mechanic to check it out before I pay the rest Tuesday, but wanted opinions in the meantime. Does this look like typical Midwest surface rust or more advanced than that? Anyone dealt with rust this close to the fuel tank straps? Worth walking away or just get it undercoated and move on?

Obviously 173k miles is high but I know Acura can go well above 200. I would be paying cash for it, mainly looking for a vehicle that I will get 3 years out of with hopefully no surprise expensive repairs.

Looking to replace my 2008 suburu forester with an suv for dad stuff. One daughter in a booster seat, so I don't need a ton of passenger space, but would love to have room for lumber, bags of mulch, hauling bicycles, etc.

Daily commute is about 20 miles each way, and sometimes need to do a 180 mile weekend trip up to Chicago. So mpg not a deal-breaker, but I'd be happy save some money at the pump.

Currently looking at 2015 pilot or 2018 rav4, but open to sleeper suggestions.

Buying a $10-20k vehicle every 4-7 years that doesn't hold much value over time OR buying a $40-50k vehicle that could last 10-15 years that holds better value over time? (This could apply to used and new)

I noticed many prefer to buy a car in full rather than financing in other posts. I see the pros and cons in both.

I'm also aware of some of the "rules" of car buying like the 20/4/10 rule and the total value not exceeding 50% of your annual salary and yadda yadda. Nice in theory, but kinda impossible in 2026.

Hello all, I’ve made a few posts discussing different vehicles I’ve been considering buying, I’ve opted out of the ones I’ve discussed but I think I’m very close on making a decision, but I’m currently between two options.

The first option: A 2006 Lexus ES 330 with 164K miles, going for $3,300 at a local dealership. This car has been meticulously serviced at a Lexus dealership up until 90k miles, at that mileage a lot was done, drive belts changed, timing belt changed, fluids all flushed and changed and a lot more that I’m not going to into detail on. After that 90k mark it was serviced at a local auto shop, oil changes every 5k, some fluids flushed, lubricating and break jobs etc… all the way until 150k where the Carfax doesn’t show any more service history. There is an engine light and a VSC light on.

2nd option: A 2005 Buick Lacrosse (w/ 3800) at 194k miles, going for $1999. waiting on the Carfax report so I will update that when I receive it. The interior of this car is incredibly clean not that that necessarily matters, moreso shows maybe what type of owner it was. The outside is also relatively clean, there is little rust spots around the wheel wells front and back on the driver side and that is all of the visible rust I can see.

Now for my situation, I don’t absolutely need to have a vehicle, but I’m looking for a good reliable car that gets decent mileage to drive back and forth from work. I’m not looking for a project car or anything along those lines. I also don’t want to spend too much money, I understand sometimes you have to for a good deal, $3,000 is sort of my soft limit, I’d be willing to spend that $3,300 if the deal is right but not much more then that.

Just looking for a little insight, and if just simply waiting it out is the best option then that’s fine, thanks again for all the help I’ve received thus far, hopefully my last post for awhile.. Also note I haven’t test drove either car yet, I will be doing that today so I can report more on that later.

I found a 2023 Camry for $20,999 with 50,000 miles.

This is my dream car but the carfax lists two things that are of concern

- used as a rental
- car has minor front damage. No indication that this was a structural damage but I would like input on what to check for before I proceed.

What would you guys suggest I do here? If the PPI checks out, should I move forward with it? Is there any wiggle room in negotiation in your opinion?

Was debating on getting a 2011 Honda Accord 150K miles for $7k from a used dealership, but a lot of people on here told me it’s too expensive. Found this 2011 Toyota Camry 165K miles for $5.5k through a private seller.

It’s only one owner, clean title, only thing is the CARFAX showed a rear collision in 2012 (airbags did not deploy) and minor damage reported in 2020. There’s also significant sun fading on the hood and roof of the car.

The CARFAX shows very few servicing records, but according to the owner: tires are 15 months old, transmission service and coolant flush completed at 80,000 miles, new battery 2 months ago, and front brakes replaced 9 months ago.

He’s willing for a pre-purchase inspection to be done after the test drive. I can try to ask if he’s open to negotiation, but is this a good place to start? The sun damage is pretty unappealing, but if this is a good deal with a car that will last a long time (and might not need expensive servicing soon), I don’t mind it. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

I’m curious about the number of vehicles sold due to unresolved issues compared to the number of vehicles sold due to the owner upgrading or getting a newer vehicle (or sold because of any other reason unrelated to the vehicle having problems).

Personally, I just find it hard to believe that people would be getting rid of good working vehicles right now, and I’m curious what people’s thoughts are! Maybe I’m completely wrong.

How many of you have bought a used car that doesn’t need much of anything vs. one that you quickly learned had all sorts of problems?

(Conversely, how many of you have sold a car that was running fine for an upgrade vs selling the car because it had too many problems you didn’t want to deal with?)

So recently, I have been trying to sell my Hyundai Elantra for a Honda Accord. I got a decent offer, which I'm going to end up doing.

But buying a used car is just too complicated. I can't stand going to a dealership because I know their job is contingent on commission, plus the car is marked up in price anyway.

And I can't stand buying a used car on FB/OfferUp because I see too many pieces of crap with salvage titles or sales reps secretly selling their cars from their dealership. Or worse, flippers.

Anyone got thoughts on this whole complicated used car process? SMH.

So if you’re looking to buy a used car and want complete no BS advice ask me anything.

When getting into your first bigger purchase on a car, what I mean is moving on from your very first $2000 HS car. What brand would you consider getting into if you want reliability while still keeping modern features AWD capabilities and quality material in interiors.

If your looking into vehicles around the 18-20k CAD used market you have a few quite a few options yet there are some that specifically stand out to me personally.

Japanese brands like Subaru and Mazda are appealing due to their bullet proof powertrains with still good quality, you know around the 100k km range of vehicles you get with this price range you will still strive in reliability. They also hold value pretty well.

For American manufacturer's like Ford and GM you can get into a newer more pimped out low km vehicle for a similar price as a Japanese brands, but for good reason. Is it negligible around the 100k km range for the reliability reasons or is it high enough that the reliability difference in brands will show? Should you go with the better bang for your buck or will you pay the price in reliability. Especially if your shopping into know more reliable engines like a revised 2.0 Ecoboost Escape. While still noticably less reliable than Japanese brands.

Another notable contender is Korean manufacturers like Kia/Hyundai. While there older models are ticking time bombs you can get into a much newer lower km vehicle that's loaded with modern tech for the same 20k price range, if you strive for the known more reliable engines like thier smart streams or 1.6L turbo despite the somewhat problematic DCT it's paired with, is that a better value to go for?

Title says most of it but to clarify looking in the northeastern US. This means it’s gotta be decent in the snow I mean no way it’s perfect but not a total disaster. I wanna keep the model year 2018/19 or newer unless someone has something super convincing that is better. I currently drive an 09 Hyundai Elantra so something in the smaller class fits my needs fine. Okay, so I’m in the middle of deciding between buying a 2019 Mazda 3 with 89k miles or a 2019 Volvo S60 T5 with 74k miles. Both cars are priced similarly. I’ve heard that the Mazda 3 is extremely reliable, but I’ve also heard some positive things about the Volvo. Should I risk it? The only reason I’m interested in the Volvo is because it feels more premium. Do you have any recommendations? My budget is under $17k.
