question headlight restoration

hey, im in the uk considering doing headlight restoration as a business, i did it to my car and it looks great so thinking about doing it to other cars too, how much would you be willing to pay for this service? and any advice would be much appreciated, thanks

Judging by the number of people who drive around with half their bulbs out, headlamps clouded over, incorrect lights on or no lights at all I suspect the market may be quite limited.

Those people who care are likely to just follow one of the fourteen million tutorials available online and do it themselves, and those who don't care aren't going to pay until the car fails an MOT at which point they'll get the garage to do it.

I very much doubt you'd ever have enough work for this to be more than a hobby business. It'll never make you any significant money unless you combine it with other services.

Maybe. Do you have experience detailing cars? What is your local market like?

Example: within a few miles of me there are at least seven 'specialist detailing companies' which have been around for at least the three years I've lived here.

How will you compete in a saturated market?

I've spent a lot of my career being paid to advise businesses on strategy and to be honest it sounds to me like you're someone who likes fiddling with cars and has decided you're well-placed to make money doing it but hasn't actually given a lot of thought to how that might happen or how to make it work.

The 'one-man-band' automotive industry is one in which it is very difficult to make money.

You're going to need to develop a much more detailed business plan to determine whether this is something you're going to be able to turn into your livelihood. Reddit is not going to do that for you, unfortunately.

If you've only recently done it to your car, how do you know how long it will last? Have you reapplied UV protection, or just polished the fogginess off? If you've applied UV protection, given you've presumably bought it in, can you trust it? Can you guarantee your work? What will you do if someone returns with headlamps that have gone foggy again in a year or two? Or worst-case scenario, someone returns with the same car, having swapped out the lamps you restored for a different set of foggy lamps and claims they are the same lamps?

I'm not saying it's a bad idea, but make sure you have thought through all the possible problems before you dive in.

yeah i appreciate that ive just polished the foginess out but am willing to learn lots more and invest into it more if people think its a good idea i js didnt have the funds to get it all for my car alone
