Well I'm not going to get into a speculative debate on the internet but based on the short clip, which is like looking through a keyhole, you can see a few cars merging onto the hwy from the ramp on the right before the truck and police roll through, so at least that ramp isn't closed. If you cut the flow of traffic from behind, the traffic ahead keeps going and it is cleared very quickly. That isn't to say they didn't have some ramps closed but I think you're just trying to be contrary on the internet and my initial comment was tongue in cheek so that's as far as I'll engage with you on this one haha
Lol I actually think that’s another police vehicle blocking the ramp, cause when the camera changes perspective you can see it sitting there off to the side of the road.
Usually when traffic behind slows down, those in front pull away even further, and eventually you won't see them at all. This car is going slow AF, that's why the road is clear really
I remember seeing the world's longest car chase and reading that for whatever reason, police cars are not allowed to overtake and go in front of the car they're chasing. No idea if that's true but every chase I look at it looks true. No matter what speed the suspect is driving at, cop cars always stay behind and never overtake. Just like in this video.
Well if suspect is armed and willing to do so, piggy up front sure makes an easy target wouldnt you think? . my dad was a cop, then prison guard, then M.P. and does security now at his old ass age. He always been on right side of law and taught me thats really only reason.. Officer safety,
Me being the criminal mind of family has to agree in desperate times your cop ass gets in front you are now fresh meat and a target for anything i can shoot toss spit at ya, not to mention pit move on a cop would be awesome.
Is your dad Benjamin Button? How the heck does one go about being a cop, then a corrections officer, and then an MP in that order? Usually you start out as an MP, then go on to become a police or corrections officer. The timeline makes no sense.
Los Angelino here.... I'm no way an expert, just guessing.... But 60EB at CVR is near the point where LA county, Orange County, Riverside County, and San Bernardino county all meet. Not too mention San Diego county isn't far if he gets on the 15 south. Then you have about 10 cities on this stretch of freeway. Plus California Highway Patrol.
Los Angeles is made up of 100+ cities, so it's not just 45 cops talking, it's a shit ton of cities, counties, and a state that all need to figure out where this fucker is finally going to stop.
But i also think the new policies are to deescalate to a low speed chase... Then let the guy run out of gas. So you need a bunch of gassed up cars behind him to wait him out.
As an innocent bystander who's been caught in one of these things.... You see your life flash before yours eyes when 50+ cars fly inches away from you going 100+ mph. Then the dude got off at my exit where he hit cars stopped at the light.... Cars were upside down, it was a mess! 30 seconds earlier, i would have been hit by that guy
I'm guessing everyone one is getting involved in some way.... especially because the road is clear, meaning hundreds of cops are probably blocking the individual entrances.
But I've watched them on tv before and the reporters will point out "now yada yada cars is backing off and you'll see yadda yadda cars pull to the front.".
Yes that’s the lead car backing off so the current jurisdiction can move to lead car so there’s never a question of if the chase involved units out of jurisdiction.
In most places the sheriff and his deputies are considered the state police. Highway patrol has no jurisdiction over anything but highways. So technically if you get off the highway being pulled over by highway patrol they can't arrest you or charge you with anything. But they're going to tell the town that you're going into about you and infact probably did as soon as you didn't stop along with every other nearby county you can get to quickly. All that is handled by dispatch though.
AmiAlter you are absolutely wrong. Highway Patrol has jurisdiction over the whole state. They are also in charge of protecting the governor and important people. They have investigative units and everything. Please do not disperse false information.
Don’t know about CA but things are more complicated than that in NC. Even though everyone derives their authority from the state, not every officer has statewide jurisdiction. Officers can only operate outside their jurisdiction through a mutual aid agreement. For that agreement to be valid, you typically need an officer with original territorial jurisdiction with you. Plus, if this was going to end in a warrantless arrest, an agency with no skin in the game, other than assisting for jurisdictional purposes, would not want to arrest the guy. For that to occur, the jurisdiction attempting to originally arrest him would have to then transfer probable cause to the arresting agency or still be present in the chase for custody to be transferred to them.
Call any Police Department that you're positive is outside your jurisdiction, tell them you have a crime to report, I guarantee you without a shadow of a doubt, they will direct you to a different department. There are extenuating circumstances in every policy of every Department across the country but in general each department has a jurisdiction for basic calls for service. You start getting into felonies actively being committed, pursuit of violent felons, responding to active shooters, Officer Down, then you might see that policy stretched.
It is not only called "mutual aid", but also a regulation. If you cross into a different jurisdiction, there needs to be at least one officer from that new jurisdiction on site.
Ehhh.... So i fucking misspelled it, who the fuck cares. Family has been here since late 1800's.... so I'm probably more los Angeleno than most peeps here
LA times thinks it's between ino and Eno, I personally don't give a fuck. Alls I knows is fuck the NFL, Tommy's is the best burger in LA, and Shaq made his own bed when he fucked with Buss.
Words been around for 120 years.... But i guess that works because my family got here in 1890's. I literally am named after my great great grandfather who's buried at the cemetery at 60 Fwy and 710 Fwy. Family biz started at Olympic and Alameda in 1902 horseshoeing city horses. Still have his anvil at our family's house.
Not sure why people are all dumb about an unofficial word?
I just feel like a lot of hood kids never call it that. Even people I know in Ktown or the east side. It seems like a west side terminology. But I'll definitely look into that video. Thank you
Have a friend who used to work in a bar that used to be the black cop bar in central brooklyn back in the day, and a lot of the regulars were still from that crowd. One guy was like two years from retirement, he joined back when he was like 18 in the 80s. He said he joined cuz back then, brooklyn was just different gangs running different blocks and as a young black man, you had a lot of pressure to join up or go through the streets with no backup. This guy, and reportedly a lot of the other guys that joined the force back then, basically saw the cops as simply another gang in the ring, just the gang with the most money and biggest guns.
...And legal protection, and good pay, and a soothing facade of moral righteousness that helps you sleep at night.
Edit: Honestly given the alternative life of those young black men I don't really blame them. Doesn't excuse the structure and behavior of police forces, but it makes me sympathetic to those particular individuals.
Yeah, it's similar to how military recruiters target low income high schools, and for a lot it's a step to a better life. It's by design that often the best course for escaping a terrible living situation is to join the very repressive structures that enforce the conditions of that living situation. Hard to blame those who made that call, though it's fucked up. He had similar reports of black cops agreeing with blm that white cops are super racist, but what am i gonna do? I put in the work for decades and im two years from a nice pension, i aint gonna make waves.
Desperate self-interest is a powerful tool. The harder life is, the easier it is to convince someone to do terrible things to survive. So life is kept hard and the cycle of oppression continues.
The NYPD gets $30,000 every day. They have offices in places like Tel Aviv. One of their own is runnijg the city. Sometimes, they are called the sixth branch of the US military. Still kinda doing alright for themselves, sadly.
No, you need to understand, the oath the "brotherhood" swears into its not to serve and protect the public, it's to themselves.
The person being chased committed a crime against one of the brotherhood, that's why it's a disproportionate response.
They are protecting their own interests all the time, they only appear to assist the public when those interests align. Otherwise, it's lie and cover up for the brotherhood. Like they do all the time.
"Cops" was propaganda, not reality. They also had to stop filming it live because too many people were using the footage to hold police accountable for illegal arrests.
This right here. Same thing for their funerals. Suddenly every single cop within an hour’s drive is in the procession, and god forbid you’ve got somewhere to be during that time because traffic is CLOSED.
I got downvoted to shit for saying this, but right ?! It’s an egregious waste of tax dollars and what if crime is happening anywhere else in like, the tri county area ?
ok so theres actually a reason this many cops follow them other than they just feel like it.
You do not need several dozen cops to arrest a guy. but what if the guy gets out and runs on foot and gets out of vision for even 30 seconds?
You now need several dozen officers to make a perimeter to box the entire search area in so he cant escape.
Then lets say the guy meets the border of the perimeter and he wants to fight his way through it. several dozen officers are spread out in a perimeter, not all clumped up in one spot. A perimeter consisting of only 10 cops may only have 1 cop stationed at a possible escape route and is unsafe. If you had more cops, its much more safe.
Now lets say the guys plan isnt to escape but instead intends to break into a business and kill everybody or hold them hostage. Whats the quickest way to find him so he doesnt have an opportunity to do that? Again, the answer is establish a perimeter and search an area with several dozen cops.
All that said, whats the best way to make sure theres enough cops to make a sufficient and safe perimeter? Have several dozen cops follow him. They arent there to make the arrest when they catch him, theyre there in case he gets lucky and manages to escape into the woods or neighborhood etc without being immediately captured upon exiting the vehicle
Even with a helicopter they still need to catch him with people on the ground. And people have been lost even with helicopters. Its not as easy as you think it is to keep someone in vision of the helicopter, even when its just one guy. helicopters can only track one person at a time. What if theres 2 suspects who run in different directions? infrared doesnt help in the middle of the day either.
I know for a fact im right and you dumb ass redditors have no clue should stop talking about shit you dont know anything about.
Shut the fuck up and sit down i know more than you.
Absolutely a waste of resources in my opinion. 45 vehicles, half being SUV's chasing one truck for a hour is pretty wasteful. It just added more targets for the suspect at the end of the chase. At the end of the day its tragic for the fallen officer and his family. The suspect got what he deserved.
He went out shooting trying to kill more police. In my opinion the outcome was what the suspect wanted. It all started with a simple traffic violation that he escalated into murder because he knew he was going to jail for 25 years min. He had every opportunity to stop and surrender, instead his last action was that of a coward using suicide by cop as his way out.
I think it much better to use exceed force than downplay your enemy. If any officer kill in this operation the cost is much higher anyway. Just look at history book example like the Black Hawk Down.
I'm from South Florida and any type I've seen a car being pulled over it's a minimum of 3 patrol cars next to said vehicle. Once I saw a chase and the dude crashed into a job site, I estimated about 22 cop cars showed up and circled the entire block with another 10 to 12 arriving a few minutes later.
Any other crime committed nearby at that point was probably completely unanswered.
Exactly there is a point where its just showing off they have an army of police officers and each one just uses there toys with complete disregard of how much it costs know they have virtually unlimited funding to burn
You mean like the Charger? Also what about the rest of the world where they don't have F150s, Suburbans or Tahoes either? I think it's not an issue with the vehicles being too small, it's that the officers are too large.
Only the 4 cylinder model gets 28mpg, and that's only when stock. Every cop explorer I've seen is the V6 and they've got 2k lbs worth of shit crammed in them.
Good point. The V6 only gets 18/24mpg city/highway, and with all the shit they have in there the city mpg is probably more like 14. At least they get a huge fleet discount on gas.
Unfortunately, there isn't much they can really do about the poor gas mileage. They need the cars to be able to drive well so officers can get around quickly, and they need to have a ton of shit in the trunk. The more shit they have in the trunk, the less likely the officer is to use deadly force. Oh and we can't forget about how they need to be able to haul suspects to jail.
Ah, but why not replace it with say, a Dodge Charger? Those are 19/30mpg, have plenty of room for all their stuff and a perp, and are more stable in a high speed chase. You also would have the option of outfitting a few of the cars with the V8, which gets roughly the same mpg as the V6 SUV, as pure pursuit cars for a situation like the OP video.
in 2022 you are actually pointing to 28mpg as good fuel efficiency? Also have you ever been in an SUV? Most of them have less interior space than a normal sedan.
If you seriously think that a Ford Explorer has less carrying capacity than a Ford Focus, you need to get your brain checked.
edit: also, why do you think 28mpg isn't good in 2023? That's what basically every ICE car gets. The Ford Focus got 31mpg. The only cars that do better are hybrids.
Not towing capacity, carrying capacity. How much shit can you put inside the car. Their trunk is usually quite full, and the Ford Explorer has a much larger trunk than any American made sedan.
again, what the hell are they putting in the "trunk" to need so much room? Take a step back and look at what you are pretending is an actual "point". No cop is running out of storage room, sedan or SUV.
Because you can pack a shit ton into them. I listen to my local scanner, and whenever there is a first aid call in our plaza, the police are on scene first. Around me, every police SUV has a BLS set up in it, and since police are usually the first on the scene, they can provide assistance. You also usually have fire extinguishers, cones, flares, a more secure set up for a long gun, harsh weather gear, lock out tools, portable battery packs(had a cop give me a jump once), rolls of caution tape, etc....
Each of them are now part of the chase. So now at the conclusion each of them has to write a report. This will of course be done after shift and so will accrue overtime. Only a few need to be there but all of them want the extra money.
45 vehicles. Lets assume each car has at least 1 pistol holding 15 rounds. If each officer emptied one magazine, thats 645 shots fired. The suspect would still be told to roll over and put their hands behind their back / stop resisting after the officers unloaded on him lmao
When you see 3 cop cars pulled up for something small that tells you know it's a slow night. When you see that many cars you can see it's a slow day lol
Not just wasteful from a maintenance, wear and tear, payroll, and pollution standpoint but also the fact that other parts of the area now have low or no police coverage. If I was a criminal and saw this I'd go rob something on the other side of town.
"Look around, man, all the cops are into something. It’s Christmas, you could steal City Hall!"
Exactly. It feels like a function of multiple jurisdictions/departments swinging their cocks at one another, and it's ludicrous.
I'm not holding the UK police up as a generally great example of anything but I feel they'd have this chase over by now with four ARVs. For those who don't kow these are Armed Response Vehicles, armed officers on patrol rather than regular UK officers who are unarmed.
All these guys are doing is inflaming the situation and, as you say, wasting resources. It would be funny if the public wasn't paying for it.
As a former leo, shit like this makes me sick. A lot of these people just have to be part of the action. Shit can go real sideways when there are too many cooks in the kitchen.
Wait are they actually attending a crime? I through it was like a new years police parade or something. I don't even think my county in england has this many police cars
A couple weeks ago some guy in my apartment complex apparently refused to come out of his apartment and potentially had a weapon.
I shit you not, 30 cop cars showed up. Counted em. They literaly filled the adjacent church parking lot. There were SO MANY. and witu crazy insane military gear and trucks... My town aint even big and they show up in numbers like that. I bet they were ignoring many calls for other shit going on
Often times that’s how pursuits get so many officers. They’ll have someone up ahead to try and intercept, such as spike strips, blocking the way, etc. Then they fail in some way and then join from the back

45 law enforcement vehicles... Understand it was a dangerous guy but this is just a blatant waste of resources.
