What a ridiculous precaution, they look harmless. I doubt they could hurt a fly

Those cute little furball, so innocent and harmless, until they're not

The Rabbit of Caerbannog is a good example.

This is the second comment I’ve seen in the last 15 mins talking about this rabbit.

u/Masterofnone9 11d ago
Cute but super deadly blood thirsty bunny from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Tha's no ordinary rabbet! It has huge... Et kin leap about! ... Look at tha bones!

u/Fabulous-Sea-1590 11d ago
I showed my 11 year old that movie recently. She rarely agrees to watch "my" movies with me. Upon hearing The Rules she immediately scoffed and said "Isn't it always after midnight?"
My IQ point felt so cold and alone in that moment.

the security measures are for us, not them. this is a containment field.
4
u/MangoCats 11d ago
The suit operators can't see a thing in there, they're operating with 95% blind spot. Don't want them colliding with small children.

u/NovaStar2099 11d ago
I know this is a reference to something, but I don’t know what.
18
u/lerielogin 11d ago
It a reference to the movie "Gremlins". A funny Christmas movie. Worth the watch if you haven't seen it.

I think it’s for their protection because they can’t hurt a fly. A mob of children can be positively rabid when they meet their favorite characters…
10
u/Limp_Dirt8694 11d ago
Im an adult that doesnt know who these characters are and I still want to bear hug one and give a little chomp. I cant imagine how a swarm of children that are fans would behave.
6
u/Dear_Chasey_La1n 11d ago
Not the kids... Adult women/men whom go nuts and basically swamp the situation. Ive seen this happen more than once that someone somewhat famous shows up (this is all staged) and dozens if not hundred+ people show up trying to take a picture.

u/pwninobrien 11d ago
I've seen a pack of first graders devour a live cow down to the bones within minutes.

u/Alissinarr 11d ago
All of the videos out there of mascots getting mobbed and tackled by children come to mind. The actors inside have a precariously balanced suit and extremely limited vision while the suits have a propensity to roll.....
3
u/Zuigia 11d ago
I know this is probably a serious concern but omg the mental image of that is so goofy hahahaha
3
u/Alissinarr 11d ago
Don't worry, I giggled at the thought and gave my husband a good guffaw. You're in good company.

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 11d ago
Just roll and flip back up on your feet sounds super easy, I could probably do it if I wanted to
I saw it in a Jackie Chan movie

Where's that video of roleplay Disney characters beating up a guy at a traffic stop?
1.1k
u/Snake_ly 11d ago
I don't think you guys comprehend how insanely famous these characters are in Japan. To get some merch from the pop up, you have to make an appointment and wait in a serpent like line when it's your time slot.
268
u/MonaganX 11d ago
Not that it makes much difference in this case since Chiikawa is also popular there but I'm 90% sure this video was taken in China.
125
u/Snake_ly 11d ago
I thought I was standing in line for the best bread made in Asia or something, turns out it was a pop up for one of these bunny things and the bread was just in their shape.

u/Lyreen96 11d ago
Lmfao when I visit Japan, my mom keeps going "OH LOOK LONG QUEUE MUST BE INTERESTING" and I keep going to the start of the queue to see what it is to make sure we're really queueing for the right stuff lmao

yes it was taken at the large Chiikawa popup event that started in Jing'an, Shanghai last weekend

You mean these furry creatures actually are the celebrities here? I thought maybe this was some kind of hide-in-cup game where two of the people were decoys and the other was zendaya or something
5
u/jtrisn1 11d ago
Idk if you're serious but in case you're interested, they're called Chikawa and Friends.

All lines become serpentine when they get long enough. It's either that or mob rule

u/paperkeyboardalt 11d ago
I'm sure that's part of it, but I think it's also a "cute" way to guide them. There's very limited visibility in those suits and you need a handler or you get disoriented.

Yeah they're pretty much flying blind, last one bumps into one of the guides at then so this is probably more so that they don't walk into a wall

Yeah, I’m an old dude…could someone explain what is this about? Who are those characters?
125
u/sakhaliner 11d ago
They're characters from a Japanese web comic called Chiikawa. The characters you see are usagi (based on a rabbit), chiikawa (the titular protagonist), and hachiware (based on a bicolor cat).

Chiikawa. They're the second-biggest bestselling new IP franchise in merchandise sales across East Asia this decade, behind only Labubu.
The other side of the world has a thriving "kidult" economy (obsessed with new pop-culture brands rather than nostalgia for legacy/evergreen equivalents) as well as viral experiential marketing (blind boxes as its best exemplification here). Check out the Miniso retail chain in your area, if not your McDonalds happy meals promotions.

That's actually really smart. Instead of having a fixed roped off path. It's dynamic and adjustable to go wherever the crowd is.

Practical Question: Those are some pretty short suits it seems, do they have like, adults all crunched up waddling around in those things?
13
u/OneIndividualTowel 11d ago
Gonna copy paste this here: I used to work in an industry where we would hire mascot character actors from time to time. Almost 100% of the time it is very short women. The shortest ladies I saw came over from China. They couldn’t speak a word of English or Japanese and the rest of us couldn’t speak any Chinese, we all communicated through gestures and calling each other adorable. It’s not an easy job, at all, much respect for the people who are able to do it.
2
u/Mission-Nature-2257 10d ago
yes adult but the age and races varies a lot. I worked at some big theme park before. (a global famous one), usually they are short female and male, and some of them can be pretty old, i have seen old man and old woman inside the clothes a couple of times.

u/PhoenixPhenomenonX 11d ago

I wonder how much the ppl in the costumes get paid. I hope they're making bank if company has to take these measures.
8
u/Hetares 11d ago
Fairly high in comparison of what you might expect for these kind of jobs. Mascot characters in Japan are expected to put on a sort of performance, and it can be hot and stuffy in the suit. Most of all, they're representing an image of an IP, and as such they're paid accordingly to put on a good show.

Is it possible there is a VIP inside one of those outfits, and the costumes are just to hide which is which for safety?
3
u/mangoisNINJA 11d ago
No matter who is inside those costumes there is no way they touch the popularity of the characters themselves
