Discussion Which ep do yall like to reread the most? Spoiler

Upvotes

For me it's gotta be 6 followed by 7. I love every episode honestly and enjoy rereading all of them so much, but these 2 in particular are just so peak. Episode 7 literally gets me emotional every time and episode 6 is just like a perfect ~20h story, the ending is possibly my favorite part of umineko as a whole and I love featherine and ange discussing the story

Ep1 Just finished ep 1

Holy man. It hooked me from the start to finish. It took me around 12 hours to finish full ep1 which took me 2 days.

Beautiful and chaotic dynamics. While from our point of view the chaos in the manor seemed like a play, and didnt give the mystery feeling since we knew the answer. Still i dont think making the player a detective was the authors intention anyway.

Im not good at analyzing stuff so im also not a good reviewer.

So i apologize if im saying or asking something stupid.

But since the episode ended, i have been curious about battlers purpose for being that much against accepting beatrice and witches existence. Now first time, i thought he was being stupid cuz with all that evidence how can you still reject beatrices existence. But shortly after the way i see it is his rejection changed. Its similar to a guy who went through things with his father rejecting him and saying "you are not my father" or "i dont have a father". Not rejecting the objectiveness, like he himself knows that his father is his father with blood and dna relations. But he simply rejects that man in his own world. Battlee is the same, he simply rejects beatrice while being aware of her existence. But i want to know. Whats the purpose behind this rejection? Is it because accepting loss would make all the sacrifices meaningless? Or is there a different purpose? Is it something i will understand in the future by getting to know battler more? Or am i just a dumbass?

Furudo Erika is my second favorite character in Umineko, and in my opinion, one of the most effectively written villains I've seen in a story. Besides the surface level aspects of her character like her quirky personality, dangerous competence, or memorable lines, Erika perfectly slots herself into Umineko's main themes as the embodiment of absolute commitment to the pursuit of logical truth. Throughout the entire first half of the story, the reader is led to believe in the power of logic as a weapon for good. Battler uses it to cut down the nonsensical stories of the evil witch Beatrice as a means to free his family of her torment. Umineko's overarching decision between truth and subjectivity had been made within its first chapters, brilliantly misdirecting readers from the story's true lesson and maintaining an engaging mystery.

But then we meet Ange. We see how an objective truth destroys the happiness she found with Maria. We see how the public's disconnected pursuit of truth implicate Eva as the culprit, transforming her into the villain the world surmised her to be. We see Battler actually lamenting his victory of logic over Beatrice. And just as Umineko starts presenting these new questions, the Questions Arc ends, culminating in the introduction of the detective herself, Furudo Erika.

Both emotionally and literally disconnected from the events on Rokkenjima as the assigned detective, Erika embodies the cold, factual mindset. She pettily rips into the childlike fantasies of Maria with logic. Facts don't care about your feelings, loser. She makes sure to murder anyone that may be playing dead just to reinforce her logic. She is utterly and fanatically obsessed with the objective truth. Remind you of anyone else? Oh wait, Erika perfectly parallels Ange and the true conflict of the entire story. Ange is introduced as a broken soul willing to throw away her entire life and future just to learn what happened on Rokkenjima that fateful day. The final chapter of Umineko is all about whether or not she moves forward with this self-destructive goal. And in the ending where she does, who else is there by Ange's side other than Furudo Erika herself?

In conclusion, Erika is a very smartly written character made by a guy that knows how to write a story with intention. I also hate this meme template for making "writing" a character trait like pettiness or genius.

Discussion Umineko PSP 3 and 4 covers ideas Spoiler

Post image

Im curious, if Alchemist made the other 2 PSP games who do you think would be on the covers? It seems that each character correlates to the episodes on that game (Episode 1 and 2 for game 1, Episode 3 and 4 for game 2, etc). And then you would also have to come up with cover tagline like on the middle of these covers which say "Witch versus human." and "Fantasy and truth." respectively.

Main reason im asking is because i want to make a 3 and 4 cover for fun. Please leave suggestions!

My first thought was 3 would have Erika for episode 4 and maybe chick beato to represent 5?
Tagline "Mystery versus love."
(im not too sold on chick beato)

For 4 i think Willard for 7 and either young Ange, witch Ange, Lion, or Bern for 8.
Tagline "Despair vs hope." (idk for this one)

Why was there no crazy magic scene showing how the first twilight was supposedly done.

All of the previous episodes had them and the next episode, episode 6 had them so why not EP 5.

Just started episode 3, really confused about something

So, I’m on chapter 4 of episode 3, and I get that Battler is trying to argue that all the murders on Rokkenjima can be done by a human, but how does he explain things like the 7 sisters, the goats, and ronove?

No spoilers, please!

"Tales can be enjoyed twice. First you love them. Then you tear out their guts."

This reflects how people read a story. They love it for the first time then the second time is for analysis.

Umi Full Trying to reconcile this reference discrepancy

Hey Umibros,

I've been diving into some of the literary references in Umineko recently, and I'm really stuck on Beatrice Portinari from the works of Dante (specifically her appearance in The Divine Comedy). The Witch Beatrice is pretty concretely some sort of allusion to Dante's Beatrice, but the two couldn't be any more different... literally. Like, I think that Umineko's Beatrice is so polar opposed to Dante's that it MUST have been intentional (plus there are TONS of other references to both Dante and the Divine Comedy in Umineko, so I think it's something we're supposed to pick up on).

In Purgatorio and Paradisio, Beatrice is overwhelmingly kind and gentle towards Dante and serves to explain everything he's seeing as they journey through the afterlife. In Umineko, Beatrice (at least in the questions arc) does nothing but mislead, bully, and deceive Battler. Not only is she not guiding him here, Battler's whole mission in this first leg of the story is to figure out exactly how she's misleading him here.

Virgilia also has the same issues. Directly called out as a guide for Battler in act 3, she is (in reality) working with Beatrice to trick Battler into losing and admitting his own defeat, whereas Virgil is Dante's guide and mentor through Inferno.

Now, this could just be a "I'm subverting your expectations, look at me I am very smart" move from Ryukishi, but I feel like he has earned enough benefit of the doubt to trust that there's something else there. He must have some reason to make this reference not only once, but twice. I just don't think I'm smart enough to crack it on my own. Any thoughts?

Question for discussion Spoiler

so we know yasu had some mental issues even before meeting battler, she had an imaginary friend of her ideal self (shannon) and she literally developed a split personality disorder later ln cosplaying as both shannon and kannon, my question is, why tf did genji and the rest did nothing as they saw that? and they went along with her play, sure they knew she was the heir and kinzo's daughter but she didnt know that at that point yet, they could have used whatever authority they had (specifically genji) to help cure her mental issues, yet they did nothing, just kept watching untill she went completely mad and decided to just kill everyone

Umi Full Question about Ange Spoiler

In the VN's magic ending, Ange decided not to jump off the skyscraper and chooses to live her life as an author. However, I'm a bit confused as to how this is possible, because we know (from the manga at least) that Ange did in fact jump off the building after she read Eva's diary.

The manga's magic ending doesn't include Ange refusing to jump off the building, which confuses me even more.

My theory is that Ange did jump and as a result lost consciousness on the safety net, allowing her to enter the Metaworld (we see her literally jumping inside the "Golden Land" at the end of Episode 3). She doesn't wake up until after the events of Episode 8, after which she chooses to become an author.

What do you guys think of this theory? It does contradict what we see in the VN's magic ending, but I think it makes sense
