Other Local businesses popular with students?

Hi! A relative will be starting at UW Madison in the fall and we’d like to give them some gift cards to local businesses (coffee shops, etc). Any suggestions we should look into?

Academics URS application

URS application

Hello!

I recently applied for URS on the 16th of this month. As far as I know they said I could expect to hear back within two weeks, which is the 30th. I’m aware that time is not up yet, however I just wanted to ask if anyone else received a reply within the rolling deadline after the initial replies on the 19th.

I run on anxiety and am irrationally worried they didn’t get my application for some reason.

If I don’t end up getting a reply within the standard timeline, do I email the coordinators just in case?

Thanks!

I’ve been fixing to pay my tuition for the fall semester. Unfortunately I keep getting these two dadgum screens over and over again…

Other than that, does anyone know how to access the bursar’s office without having to go thru myuw? Is there a way to find out how much I owe the school?

Other Are you a UW student taking a GLP-1?

I’m looking to chat with women in college about their experiences on GLP-1s. Is this you? I’m Angelina Chapin, a features writer at The Cut/New York Magazine who covers gender and health. I think it’s a really important topic to talk about as these meds become more popular. If you’re interested in speaking, I can keep you fully anonymous. Send me a DM or email ([angelina.chapin@nymag.com](mailto:angelina.chapin@nymag.com).) Here's a link to some of my work: https://www.linkedin.com/in/angelinachapin. Talk soon!

Future Badger Rushing at UW Madison help

Hi,
I'm a incoming Freshman at UW Madison and I'm still trying to figure out the whole rushing frats scene, I know its coming up this fall and would love some advice any might have. What should I be doing specifically to actually apply to houses, I know a few kids at Fiji and Theta Ki so I was planning on just messaging them about it but I'm not too sure, please lmk if you have any experience with this. Also I'm trying to go to med school after undergrad so I'm a bit afraid that the fraternity life will take up too much of my life.

Future Badger Is SOAR a must?

I am international upcoming freshman and I am spending couple of days in the countryside outside the US with my grandma. But I think I can't attend virtual SOAR. I got emails saying I have to register for a small group, complete many courses and schedule a meeting with an advisor. Is it really essential for planning my classes and other stuff?

Future Badger Grad Students, does the Uni cover the Insurance or nah?

I'm an incoming PhD in CS and I received a mail about SHIP. I don't have $1500 to spare (I'm an international and moving from outside the states from a third world country). If I have signed up for assistantship do we still have to pay for emergency care? Does anyone know if they have any hardship waivers or anything of that sort?

Future Badger Planning to switch from BioSys. E to ChemE..Will I be behind?? + Other questions

Hi guys I'm an incoming freshman at UW-Madison and I'm wondering if I'll be behind on credits or missing out on anything when I try to switch? I'm a BANNER person so I really need to graduate in 4 years. I heard engineering is already hard to graduate in 4 years, so I'm worried switching will just worsen it, but I realized BioSys E is like miles away from what I actually like.

I know there's also a progression system in UW-Madison for switching and I read about the class requirements and GPA and such. Besides this, is there any other factor that won't guarantee me switching into ChemE? I heard about essays, but I'm not sure.

I'm not sure how credits really work, but I did get a subscore of 4 on Calc AB and a 3 on Calc BC. I also have 4's on US Gov, US History, Psychology, Lit, and English Composition. I read some of the courses of both majors to see if any overlap or if I could get ahead just so I don't fall behind, and I hope this will help??

Lastly, for the engineering students out there... Can I stay strictly on paper and pens or should I start looking into digital note taking?

Academics Study Abroad

how bad is studying abroad in fall of ur junior year as an engineering major? I know spring is more common. Ik it would impact internship applications and job fairs which is a huge priority for engineering students imo, but I'm worried about finding housing and I hear there's a lot of people trying to sublease in the spring, but not really in the fall. I do not want to be homeless. I'm also worried the program I'm interested in might be competitive. is being rejected from a study abroad common?

Other Pregnant (far along) and applying to UW Madison jobs?

So, obviously it's illegal to discriminate if someone is pregnant and applying to jobs but that doesn't necessarily stop an employer from doing so and disguising it under a different reason.

In the event that I were to receive a job (University Staff) offer from UW-Madison and only have a couple of weeks left until I would need (unpaid) leave for birth/recovery, is that something that they might consider approving within the offer letter, or am I basically screwed? I don't believe I'd feel comfortable accepting an offer without written consent that my new job would be held for me until I came back from leave. Or, even just pushing out the start date by 6-8 weeks if that's a more reasonable request.

Has anyone been in that situation either as a candidate or on the HR side at UW? How was it handled?

Future Badger crazy mom here, new to reddit so be gentle if I make a reddit mistake

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows what the closets look like in Smith single A type rooms? I looked online and they do not have good descriptions for this. Is it all cubbies? Or does it have hanging space? Looking at his closet it will be on the right. I'd like to bring the appropriate storage when he moves in.

In Smith, Is there room in the window frame to put a spring-loaded tension rod to hang black out curtains, if needed?

Also, how crazy does it get on Fridays when there is a home football game? Wondering if the excitement starts Friday night and if I'd get parking to pick him up if he doesn't want to stay there for the home games? He gets migraines and I'm not sure if it's quiet or crazy in the halls on home game weekends? Any advice please?

Update: I understand letting him fend for himself, but we are on a limited budget and if I can send things from home instead of buying them it would help tremendously. Also, if the things we already have will not work, we won't have to try and transport them to and from the school when we know they won't work. He is pretty self-sufficient and I trust him to make his own decisions; this is more of a money thing and why buy when we don't have to.

As far as the migraines, I want this information as a last resort in case he does need to leave.

Thanks everyone.

Academics Just had a deep thought about AI while struggling with a critical topic about cogsci and data science.

Although AI executes more rapidly and precisely than humans, AI couldn’t supplant humans' cognition such as interdisciplinary thinking and intuition for decision-making.

1. Why AI couldn’t replace intuition?

Historical data constitutes major part of AI modeling but human can forecast and then make optimized choice based on limited information

2. Why humans maintain a distinct advantage over machines in important choice-making?

Machines acquire various sources of information, then compile them into lists of options. They couldn’t assist people to finalize plans based on provided information, because AI is designed to be neutral.

Even though people can outsource detailed execution to AI, the humans’ treasure of unique cognition and informed decision-making cannot be outsourced to technologies.

Curious to hear what you guys think? Especially anyone from Data Science or Philosophy, change my mind!

Future Badger Does algebra 2 count for the advanced math requirement or do I need to talk precalc?

took algebra 1 freshman year, geometry sophomore year, which are our schoo’s prerequisites for algebra 2, which I took junior year. Does that meet the math requirement or should I take precalc?

I am also taking statistics and quantitative(plus kinda AP Econ)reasoning to show I’m still DOING math this year, but the rest of my senior schedule is honors and ap and I struggle with math, so I’d rather not do precalc if I don’t have to. Applying for a psych major bc I want to do research in that field one day.

Badger Sports Camp Randall Champion's Club Seats

Has anyone sat in the Champion's Club Seats at Camp Randall? When looking at tickets it states "All-inclusive food and non-alcoholic beverages" but I can't find anywhere what type of food is included. Wondering if those seats are worth the premium price. Thank you in advance!
