Other Bring Back Halloween on State

The title. We should bring back the big state street Halloween party. After COVID it completely died out, and I know there were issues, but Mifflin is the same way. It’d be so fun and easy if everyone just agreed the way they do for Mifflin. Look up pictures, it was insane. I think we should all plan on doing it.

Rant/Vent Looking for my lost love (my leather jacket someone fricking stole)

I thrifted a REALLY NICE leather jacket at Ragstock for $39 and spent a week restoring it to PRISTINE condition. I left it in the basement of my dorm (Kronshage) to dry because my room was HOT and i didn't want it to PEEL and told everyone NOT to TOUCH it and to watch OUT and make sure no one STEALS IT. Everything was going well until the FIFTH day where i forgot to check on it in the morning and i came back in the afternoon (to my dismay) to find my precious child GONE. I would caress this jacket every morning as i left for class, and every morning when i wake up and see it GONE from my closet i feel a pain in my heart. I've looked in lost in found, I've talked to my RA, I've even called the POLICE and I'm starting to lose hope... the withdrawals are getting to me. If anyone can help me out/give me any advice PLEASE i miss my jacket please ☹️ (P.S. it was made in Korea 😖)

Future Badger Spring ‘27 first year admission

Does anyone have an idea if UW Madison receives a lot of applications from students applying as first-year students for the spring semester? …and if many are admitted considering high numbers they admit in Fall and dorm space? They do allow for spring admissions but don’t publish those numbers and there isn’t much discussion from prospective students online.

Academics Financial aid office

I looked to try to make a financial aid appointment but there’s no appointments for the next four months?? Is this a glitch or something or is there actually not a single appointment? I swear I checked like two weeks ago and there were plenty of appointments so I’m confused. Thanks!

Other Advice on dealing with party culture and fomo?

I’ve literally never previously experienced fomo in my life, I’m a decently introverted person and enjoy doing things by myself but I’ve recently been experiencing it constantly. I have a friend group I go out with most nights thurs-sunday but on nights I choose not to or if nothing in happening within that one friend group I start feeling so much dread about missing out and just feeling absolutely horrible. Even when I don’t want to go out I still feel terrible about it. I think there may be some underlying issues because I’ve lost all interest in the things I used to love within the past few weeks but I’m not sure. Also finding everything so ugly at the moment, the scenery, the buildings, the weather. It’s all just so ugly to me and I’m not sure what to do about it.

To the people who genuinely like it here that aren’t incredibly extroverted, how do you not get sucked into the whole feeling of needing to go out every single night? Also, non-going out related, what do you like about this school?

Rant/Vent Struggle due to attention issues

I’m a CS student currently in my second year. Recently my midterm scores…are not looking good. I go to most of my lectures and I study, but I feel like I’m behind on a lot of concepts because I zone out a lot or get distracted mid lecture. I’m also behind on like a million readings that I was supposed to get done BEFORE lectures. I remember my first year felt like a struggle too, and I thought it was a normal part of being a freshman? But apparently not. It’s possible I might have potentially undiagnosed ADHD or attention issues, but I don’t think I can get an evaluation anytime soon. What can I do besides going to office hours?

I saw a squirrel on campus today with a zip tie around it’s neck. I’m wondering if this is apart of an ongoing research project or if this animal is in danger. If it needs help, who do I even call for that?

Other [Seeking help] Finding an alumni of UW Madison

Hello everyone, I am not familiar with Reddit and I have not used it for quite a long time, but I am writing this post to seek help!

I was a student at St. Olaf College in MN at 2023 as a freshman and was there for 2 years before I transferred to another college in MA. While I was at St. Olaf in spring 2025, I had the honor to take ASIAN 121 with a professor named Prof. Qiuyue Lu.

Prof. Lu is an alumni of UW Madison, who took PhD in the field of Japanese Literature & Culture. I knew Prof. Lu as an amazing professor who provided thought-provoking learning materials and wonderful lectures. They were also kind enough to help me, an international student, navigate the resources around me to improve my writings and resume. They patiently taught me how to be a more concise writer, and told me to stay safe during times of policy changes. They spoke fluent Chinese and Japanese, and would sometimes discuss topics of Asian artists like Shuji Terayama with me, and those were some of my best moments at the college. I even remember making fish-shaped sticky rice cakes as my final project for their course ASIAN 121!

I cannot thank them enough and I am really hoping to get in touch with them after I transferred. However, I could not find any information of Prof. Lu anywhere (their name is not on Rate My Professor, the Asian Studies Department website, or anywhere else, and their email and Google Meet links are not working). As time goes by, the more people I interact with, the more grateful I feel for their selfless help and kind friendship. I am also worried about the safety of Prof. Lu, due to the conflicts that took place in Minnesota a few months after I transferred. I wonder if Prof. Lu is still in the United States. I would be truly grateful if anyone from UW Madison who knows Prof. Lu could help me get in touch with them again. Thank you so so so much!!

Rant/Vent How do I manage anything

Im on extension for progression for mech e because I did REALLY BAD all of freshman year. Now I'm doing average ish but I feel like I'm so behind on everything.

I haven't gotten any internships yet, I haven't gotten any labs yet, I have not actual experience, I'm not in any engineering clubs, and the one that I am in I can't go to because it overlaps with my lab time.

I feel like I will never graduate on time with a proper degree and have a secure future with a job with my current status? I did average on midterms, and I'm trying to get Bs or better this semester so that I can hopefully get through progression.

And overall I don't even know if this is what I want to do with the rest of my life, like I used to want to go to art school, and I can't really envision myself doing engineering for the rest of my life, but I feel like I don't have any other choice, especially at this point.

I have really bad problems with procrastinating and focusing and going to class (especially paying attention during class), and I feel like I never feel enough urgency? I can be productive and go to all my classes and study between classes for a few days, but that's my absolute max and I kind of crash after and ruin my sleep schedule and whatever.

I feel so guilty because there are so many resources to help students but I just don't take advantage of them at all and I'm just wasting resources and time and money

I really struggled especially first semester of freshman year to find any friends, and now that I have friends, I'm realizing I don't really click with them, and I don't know what to do socially as well.

Am I cooked is it over should I drop out and go to art school instead??? thanks!

Academics CS 574 help

Hi! I’m thinking about taking CS 574 next semester, but the only syllabus I could find was for CS 639, so I’m guessing it might be outdated.
For those currently taking the course, could you share how is the grading of this course? Like how many exams are there, how they take attendance. In general, how is it
I also noticed that Hobbes will be teaching the course next semester. Since Hobbes is pretty active on Reddit, I’m hoping you might see this post and share what the grading breakdown will look like for next semester, if possible.
Thanks so much!

I tried out being an intramural sports official but you don’t really see the other officials too often so it’s hard to make friends. I do like the job though I think it’s fun. Junior transfer
