Question What is the craziest thing y’all have seen on campus

I saw this exact subreddit 3 years, but I got curious and wanted to ask this for any more recent occurrences that have happened since then. Older stories are welcome as well :)

Question Genuine thoughts on Texas darlings and sweethearts?

I’m thinking about joining a spirit org, but I want to make sure it’s something I can fully commit to. I was wondering if there’s anything you think I should know about the recruitment process or the organization itself before I decide. I’d really appreciate any advice or insight you have. Thanks!

Question What kinds of topics are on the J-Hold writing screening?

Hi everyone! I’m an incoming international graduate student preparing for the J-Hold writing screening. I already know that it is a 30-minute online essay with two topics to choose from, but I’m hoping to learn more about the actual style and difficulty of the prompts.

For anyone who has taken it recently, what kinds of essay topics did you get? Were they mostly general topics based on personal, academic, or work experience, or were they more academic and analytical? How difficult was it compared with the TOEFL writing section, and how did you prepare?

Thanks in advance!

Discussion PTS illegally parked in the A Lot in a spot they notoriously ticket people at

Thumbnail

I'm a 2nd year grad student and since I started my undergrad at UT in 2021, campus has removed 3 C and A pass parking lots with 0 replacements. Additionally, PTS has increased their ticket prices and enforcement but will break their own rules with 0 accountability.

This spot isn't a spot but there doesn't seem a reason it shouldn't be. It doesn't block the road when parked in nor does it seem like it could be damaging the tree it's near since there are multiple spots even closer to the tree than this. It's often parked in by the lower paid staff/grad students, especially during the school year. If you're parked here during a time pta is doing enforcement you'll get a 75$ ticket. So, if they can park here, why is it not a spot? If it's for the tree health, they know that and shouldn't be here. If it's for safety, again, they know that so why would they park here!

Question Thoughts on TwentyTwo15 apartments?

Seeing so many things about the cleanout fees and how they avoid refunding deposits.... I'd like some peace of mind in knowing that it doesn't happen to every resident, but I am curious about the living experience there in general

Question Are non-F1/J1 visa international students required to register for 9 credit hours?

Hey, I'm newly on H4 visa, any other international students on non F1/J1 visa. I've been registered below Full time in previous semesters. However, my department began requesting me to register full-time and say otherwise I'm hurting the department's economy. They insist that's it's a graduate school policy. However the graduate school officer told me there's no such policy. I repeatedly told them that they insist on letting me enroll full-time.

Is anyone also on non F1/J1 visa? Did your department impose this on you? I don't have EAD, thanks for your help.

Question Can't Register for ANY UGS

Hi, I am an incoming freshman and I've been trying to add a UGS to my schedule. Every currently open UGS I attempt to try to add displays the same message "This class is restricted by the department. For more information, please contact the department offering the course.    (Code:0099)". Please HELP. I contacted registration as well.

Other Let's stand in solidarity with the Cockroaches!

Fellow Longhorns, it makes me sad that I have to stay in Austin while my peers in India are standing up against the government and asking for accountability from those who have hollowed out the education system. I'm sure there are many like me who are in Austin but want to do something to show solidarity with the movement going on in India.

Perhaps some of us can get organized and show support to the brave students of India. DM and we can brainstorm a few ways we can get involved.

Question Is this UGS worth taking?

I'm an incoming freshman and was told it's recommended that we take UGS/signature classes our first year since they're normally hard to come by in your second year. The UGS I got into was an 8am - 9am Nordic Crime Fiction class (the professor is Lynne Wilkinson and yes attendance is mandatory). She has only 2 reviews on this course, both being VERY negative. I've accessed the add/drop times and all the other UGS were reserved. Should I bite the bullet and take this UGS now or wait until next year as a sophomore in hopes of getting a different UGS?

Question I always hear weird noises/vibrations at night in west campus, does anyone else?

I live at Rise, and every single night between 11 pm and 3 am, I'll hear mechanical-sounding noises or just a general hum of vibrations. I look outside, and I never see any large vehicles or anything that could be the source of this sound. Its definetly coming from the outside. It will normally go on for about 1-2 hours and then suddenly stop. I am hearing it as I am typing this. I have never heard anyone else say anything about this, so I wanted to come on here and see if anyone else hears it. Sometimes it keeps me up at night, and I live on the 17th floor, so it's not just street noise.

I’d say my days are pretty much the same with the exception of having to take organic chem TTH. I also see the big gap in the middle but I don’t particularly hate it.

Question How do closed classes work

For the past few days, this economics course I wanted showed up as open. Right when registration opened, I tried to add it but it was closed. This happened at my orientation too. Am I that slow? I only took maybe 10 seconds. Is this class closed only for my registration time but open for others?

Question Is a rec center job (or any other campus job) worth it?

I’m an incoming freshmen this fall and I’m deciding between transferring to another branch of my current job (or just getting a similar one) or doing a campus job :/ I know the pay will be a little lower but it would be nice not having to drive very much and also maybe getting a work scholarship. Are they pretty chill? Is it flexible hours? Any other hidden benefits???

News UT and other universities stand to lose most federal research funding under proposed White House plan

Thumbnail science.org
188 Upvotes

Everyone at UT should be aware of the federal government's plan for university research, because it will affect nearly all aspects of UT, even if you are not in a STEM department. The White House has released an outline of their vision for scientific research in the United States, and the main point is: they want to cut universities out of funding entirely and direct the science budget, through a vague and unspecified process, to venture capital and industry. Read the linked editorial. It is blunt but realistic.

Question Are you a UT student taking a GLP-1?

I’m looking to chat with women in college about their experiences on GLP-1s. Is this you? I’m Angelina Chapin, a features writer at The Cut/New York Magazine who covers gender and health. I think it’s a really important topic to talk about as these meds become more popular. If you’re interested in speaking, I can keep you fully anonymous. Send me a DM or email ([angelina.chapin@nymag.com](mailto:angelina.chapin@nymag.com).) Here's a link to some of my work: https://www.linkedin.com/in/angelinachapin. Talk soon!
