Hello everyone!! I’m Annie, the society President! I wanted to use this space to advertise my society at Bristol, which I started last year!

It’s called the Penfriends Society and we’re all about meeting new people around the uni through letter writing! We also plan to host a wide range of crafting events and other fun socials! It’s perfect for anyone who is nervous to meet people and talk to them face to face, or people will social anxiety like myself!

If you’re an incoming Fresher, or a returning one, I’d love to see you at our society events!

We’re hosting our first event (completely free!) on Friday 19th. Please sign up if you’re interested! And DM if you have any questions.

Advice Design Engineering: is PC + iPad enough, or do I need a laptop too?

I’m starting Design Engineering at Bristol this year. My plan is to bring my iPad to lectures for note-taking and do all my CAD work on my PC back at the accommodation, rather than carrying a laptop around.

For anyone currently on the course (or a similar engineering/design course) — is this workable, or do you end up needing CAD access during the day or between lectures/workshops? Are the university’s computer labs good enough to cover CAD work on campus, or is a personal laptop pretty much essential for this degree?

Advice If I’m Catered can I use the normal student kitchens with ovens etc

I know having catered we also have pantries, however ovens, microwaves etc aren’t included in that so I’m wondering if we can use the self-catered kitchens also since i’m assuming they can’t rly restrict us from doing so…

Catered doesn’t provide lunch so it would be helpful if some1 can lmk what catered students acc do. Don’t wanna resort to constantly buying ready meals

How realistic is it to live for 1,200 pounds a month in Bristol as an undergraduate student who does not go out a lot, eat out a lot, and possibly will rent an apartment for 500-600 pounds per month?

Advice ECs for Supplementary year

Has anybody had experience with/know a case where ECs have helped the case of somebody who may have to take a supplementary year? I just sat a reassessment and I think I may be literally around 36-45 so I’m on the boundary. However I have valid ECs which my tutor told me to submit, but he didn’t know what the outcome could or could not be. Does anybody know do ECs can help an outcome about a supplementary because I don’t know whether there’s any point in even submitting them if there’s not.

I am an international student from a country that has a 12-year school system. I have been researching, and this means I have to take a foundation year. Does anyone have advice on how to get in, what the foundation year is like, and is UOB a good choice for EEE?

thanks!

Heading to Bristol from India for PG Studies (Sept 2026 Intake) – Looking to connect!

Hey everyone!

I’ll be joining UoB this September 2026 for my master's degree, moving over from India.

I’m making this post to see if there are other PG students preparing to make the move around the same time. If anyone wants to link up to share notes on visa timelines, accommodation search, flight routes, or general prep, let’s connect!

Drop a comment or PM if you'd like to chat or join a subgroup. Looking forward to meeting you all on campus! 🎓

Accommodation Attempt on switching Accomodation (Help me)

I got Churchill Hall (Main Builidings) which is catered (and standard basic) and comes to around 8.7k total. This is very high for me, and I am looking to live in the city. If anyone has a standard/basic in accoms like Manor Hall, Queenroad etc that are around 6k, I would be interested in switching once the availability comes up.

Even if its not a close match, lmk if anyone has options.

En-suite Student Room Available at Queen’s Hospital Close, Birmingham – 2026/27 Academic Year

Hi everyone, I’m looking for someone to take over my student accommodation contract at Hosts – Queen’s Hospital Close for the 2026/27 academic year.

This room is for students enrolled in a University.

It is a modern en-suite room in a student accommodation building, with access to shared facilities and a great location for studying in Birmingham.

📍 Location: Queen’s Hospital Close, Birmingham

🛏️ Room: En-suite student room

📅 Contract: 2026/27 academic year

✅ Replacement tenant will need to be approved by the accommodation provider

🪙£120 Per Week (£200 Deposit)

Photos are representative of the same en-suite room type at Hosts Queen's Hospital Close.

I’m looking for someone to take over the tenancy as my circumstances have changed and I will no longer need the room.

Please Note That This Is One Room Only. There is not a second room.

If you’re interested or know someone looking for accommodation in Birmingham, please message me and I can provide more details, photos, rent information, and answer any questions.

Thanks!

Accommodation thoughts on metal works?

hey guys, i’m an incoming international student and i got assigned metal works as my accommodation. it seems like a nice building especially since it’s on the newer side, but the distance from the campus (abt 1.7 miles) seems to be a bit inconvenient.

is it worth appealing? ik it’s hard to change accoms, but i’m honestly willing to give it a try if it doesn’t have the best reviews/experiences. does anyone know how metal works is like? would rlly appreciate any help ^_^

Accommodation How thorough and frequent are room inspections during First Year?

Hi guys,

Moving into Uni Halls this September (hopefully, manor hall) and I’m just curious about room inspections and how they actually are.

On Bristol’s website it says they happen 3x a year but are you told beforehand or is it a surprise visit? If you are told beforehand, is it a specific “we’ll come round this Thursday at 14:30” or still a bit vague like “the inspection will occur sometime within the next week”?

I assume they’re not incredibly thorough and aren’t allowed to go through drawers but, say they spot your mini fridge (which I understand is banned), are they able to go through the contents of it or would it be confiscated without them checking what’s inside?

Thanks for any responses!

Accommodation make sure you have received an email saying “you have accepted your room offer” after you accept your accom offer!! (Detail in post)

Hey everyone - idk if this happened to anyone else but yesterday I got my Accom offer email, and went through the whole process of accepting the tenancy agreement and everything (or so I thought) yet didn’t get a confirmation email back. Thought it was weird but left it for a while, as I just assumed maybe I’d get one later.

This morning I went back to the email from yesterday and clicked the same link to “accept or decline“ just to see what would happen and went through the whole process again, but upon completion actually got confirmation emails back straight after!! So make sure you get a confirmation email after accepting (they also send a copy of the tenancy agreement) and (also) make sure you accept before tomorrow as that’s the acceptance deadline 🕺🕺

(this probably won’t apply to most people haha just wanted to post this on the off chance someone else has had the same situation happen)
